Message: Regarding CIF- The first year we had a varsity team was 53/54 and we won the league and played in 2 CIF games. 1st game in the playoffs was lost miserably to Carpenteria with no score from Hawthorne. I was at that game and very disappointed. The next year we took the league again and was in the playoffs. In 55/56 we won CIF. All under the coaching of Chauncey and Capelouto. (Hope I got my facts right) We were all so proud of our teams and coaches. Football and Basketball were a huge part of our high school experiences.
Thanks Marilyn, yes you did get the facts correct. It's really odd how a new school at the time could have reached the CIF playoffs, but we did it twice in our first 2 years of competition. Really remarkable.

Message: I totally agree with the need for these sports, etc programs to create well-rounded kids. However, not all schools are in the same boat in Ca apparently. Our little high school up in the mountains has lots of sports going on (although their football team...not so good regardless of the nice uniforms). The band has brand new uniforms and the yell leaders as well. Two granddaughters with full- ride golf academic/scholarships and one grandson with academic/swimming scholarship. California could do a lot more, but we are not the OC or SF area up here and there really is opportunity that seems to come with a lot of hard work. I agree, parents and grandparents need to stay involved and have their voices heard by the kids and the schools, our folks sure did.

Message: What Mary Ann and John said about the present and how surreal it seems. But now since you brought it up I will have to head to the basement and start looking for the the two foot long splinters of the Samo High cross bar. We ripped it to the ground like ..well a wooden goal post of the day should be. Also I kept an original 3X4 ft schedule with all the game scores in marker pencil. And its hard to admit it, but I lost my white Chuck Taylors from that night..
I have that 3X4 hanging right here in Cougartown central. It too has all the scores marked on it. Your Chuck Taylors, I wore out about 40 years ago.

Message: The sad thing about the financial woes of California is about who it affects. It's no fault of the schools and students. It's just so tragic that the lifestyle and extra curricular and traditions as we knew it in the '60s and '70s has been destroyed. No football team, no cheerleaders, band or drill team, etc. It's a tragic cycle. Those who say "they're there for an education" just don't understand the need for the well rounded education and clubs, band, sports, etc. are so important, more than ever now, in my opinion. I look at the students in this rural community and the scholarships and other opportunities through academics, clubs, band and athletics and appreciate the scholarships available to both boys and girls. I apologize for the length of my comments, but it's a sad state of affairs for the young people in CA and I know we all know what it could and should be.
I totally agree with you Mary Ann. We always had sparkling uniforms (football, baseball, band, cheerleader, flag girl, etc). Plenty of elective type programs, the Knights, the Diaconians. Also our parents were greatly involved either through youth sports ie Little, Middle, Pony League, scouting, both boys and girls programs, the PTA, civic groups, etc. It seems todays parents do not get involved like the 50s-70s parents. The Superintendant gets $700,000 plus a year and the band members have no uniforms? What is with that mentality?

Message: Just wanted to put a little different spin on comparing these two football events. I have said several times on Cougartown that '59 game made all of us want to play football. Several of the assistant pros up at Palos Verde's GC told me that they were at the 70s game and then played in the late 70s. Sounds like these two games were more similar than different.

Message: Haven't chimed in for ages but Clark's post hit the mark. So many friends, neighbors and classmen (and women if that need be said). Although I was an underclassmen to all of these, many were great friends but all of them studs! RIP to my good friend Danny, Bruce you were the coolest wherever you ended up, John you were the big brother I never had, Kurt it was good seeing you again last month and you're still the biggest/baddest, Leo the wing man and a hell of a baseball player and to the rest of the crew that I grew up with you guys rocked!
Thanks Bob, funny how these friends from high school resonate still, as our first sports heroes.

Message: Good recap, Clark! However, the Cougar's 1959-60 upset of Santa Monica High on their turf was right up there in the greatest HHS games ever, too! GO COUGARS!
Yes 55 years and 10 days ago Hawthorne beat Santa Monica 14-12 and stepped right into the CIF championship. I, and I'm sure Mary Ann, was there. In my opinion, both great games in HHS football history. Also, in looking at the star running backs in these respective victories, Hawthorne coaches need to look for someone with a name close to Reale or Rael

Message: I would be remiss if I did not post on Cougartown that yesterday was an auspicious day in HHS football history. It was forty years ago, November 29th, 1974 that the '74 varsity football team took Halcap field in a CIF quarterfinal playoff game to face #1 state ranked Loyola high school. It was a magic night, spirits were high and the biggest crowd I have ever seen at Halcap, 10,000 according to one paper filled the stands and the crowd was five deep on Broadway trying to watch the game. It was a hard fought game and the only HHS touchdown came from our star running back Dan Rael on our classin 10- fly sweep play with Danny outrunning all their defensive backs to the goal line. Late in the fourth quarter we led 10-7 but Loyola was driving down the field in hopes of one more touchdown to win the game. They threw a short pass across the middle to their all CIF running back Fred Brown who was immediately hit by Ted Hastings and fumbled the ball with our Robertt Armbrust recovering and we ran out the clock to secure the victory over an undefeated and top-ranked team. I had the best teammates of my life on that team, Dale Hahlbeck, Tom Fowler, Greg Rice, John Deriko, Rick Schneider, Dennis Gonsalves, Ralph Fallone, Robert Armbrust, Ernie Castro and our all underclass backfield with speedy Danny Rael at tailback, sophomore Kurt Morlock at fullback, Leo Lasala at wingback and the outstanding Bruce Chancey at quarterback guiding the offense. The school was on fire the whole week after the victory. Everyone was especially proud to be a Cougar. That spirit still has a warm glow forty years later!
Makes me proud just to read the story, Clark, thanks for weaving it into the Feedback page. I don't know why it's taken this long to tell it

I received a call from Amber Overhauser a bit ago and her husband passed away last month. She was unable to attend the reunion due to his illness. She is feeling a bit lonely this holiday season and could use a friendly voice. If anyone wants her phone number, please send me a private message". Pauline, Its my hope that anyone who may have contact with Amber or want to contact her you will contact Pauline on FB so you can reach out. Message: The majority of the Hawthorne street name change from state names to numbers occurred on May 5,1938 as proclaimed by Fred Hauser the Mayor at the time. This also included changing Rose to Roselle and upgrading Hawthorne from a street to an avenue.
Thanks Jerry for that info. I also heard from Denny Unfried that the address change was between 1964 and 66.

Message: John, thanks for posting that 1938 map of Hawthorne. Besides the different street names, the address numbers are also different. From the old map, I lived on the 5900 or 6000 block of 129th Street. By the time my family lived there, it was already changed to the 4900 block. Wonder who decided to makes the subsequent changes?
Hi Armand, I believe the city decided, in the mid 60s, to make the numbering system coincide with the Los Angeles numbering system, making it easier to find an address. The old system required you to know that addresses were numbered north and south from El Segundo Bl and east and west from Hawthorne Bl. (west to Inglewood Av), making a little tough on out-of-towners trying to find gramma's house. The street name change came in the late 30s or early 40s and were probably done for the same reason. If anyone knows the actual year the street names were changed, please let us know.
