Message: I was saddened to hear of the passing of Don Allen. Don and my brother Ray were good friends and used to let Don's younger brother Bob and I hang out with them from time to time in our early high school years. Of course, I thought that was very cool. We did have some fun times! My sincerest condolences to Bob and their sister Artis and Don's children. Hey, Loretta, Happy Birthday girl. I hope you have a wonderful day.

After graduation Don served his country in the Army, then he was a Deputy Sheriff in Northern California, also a CHP Officer, finally retiring as the Chief of Police in Mena, AR. Don was a dedicated Law Man. Don lost his wife, Karen, (HHS 59), two years ago , and his Mom last year. RIP my friend, you have earned it.

Message: My mother's aunt lived well into her hundreds and would come with her daughter to visit on the holidays. She loved to tell somewhat bawdy jokes but would always switch to German for the punchline. As my generation was the first in my mother's family that had not learned German, I asked my mother's aunt why she did not tell the whole joke in English. She told me it was because the young ones shouldn't hear things like that. I replied that the youngest person in the room was in his twenties (my son) and she just winked at me and laughed.

Message: My mother's Ramona School's teacher was Evelyn B. Gawthrop. In June of 2007 I flew down So Cal to drive my mother to Redondo Beach Senior Center for the 100th birthday party of her teacher, Mrs. Gawthrop. Now Mrs. Gawthrope's brother was my Geometry teacher from HHS, Mr. George Barton, and he is at the party and is 95. I also met at the party my mother's best friend from the early years, Leeann Nixon's mom. I was quite pleased to be with such special people. Mrs. Gawthrop out lived my mom and passed away at 102 years of age.
Amazing Leo, thanks for the story. I remember Mr Barton well.

Message: Yes, I heard of Mike Weathers passing from Linda Huthmaker over the phone. Mike and I went to York Ave school (as many others on here did) and we were in the same classroom over the years while there. He shared of his travels with his parents driving across the USA back then on old Route 66. As Gary Bickers mentioned, Mike seemed to always have a smile and was a pleasant fellow. My condolences to his loved ones and others who knew him much better than I. At HHS he and I were never in a classroom together and we grew apart. We saw each other on campus & would say "Hi" but, were never 'close.'

Message: My sis-in-laws mother-in-law died a couple of years ago at the age of 100. She was in amazing good shape until her last year. Got around good and was still mentally sharp. She became a Cougar at about age 96 and married a guy almost 20 years younger that her. They eloped to Vegas. She outlived him.
She probably killed him

Message: I saw the post regards Mike's passing. As I told Dennis we all have stories that would land us all in hell. I remember Mike always smiling in the defensive huddle. I remember Mike buying Dewey Weber's '58 Chevy panel truck. But mostly I remember Mike, after wearing a bandage all week, showing up with a mustache at the prom. A really good guy.

Message: Believe it or not, the Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum is in Arlington, Texas. It's close to where the Cowboys and Rangers play. By the way, my mom is turning 86 this week. It got me thinking, it might be fun to ask Cougartown, who is the oldest person you know or have known. For me it's Irene, age 91, who still ushers at UCLA football and basketball games. Can anyone top that??
Good topic Tom, Mom just turned 94 and my Gramma Baker lived to her 96th year.

Message: Thanks for the birthday wishes and stuff, but I have to tell you something. Who in the heck my age gets appendicitis? I went into the hospital with pain on 4/12 and by the morning, I was without an appendix. Home, trying to recover, now. In addition, on my birthday, I had a horrible reaction to the pain meds and am recovering from that too! NONETHELESS, I already checked with the surgeon and he said to have fun at the reunion later this year. He just said don't do anything that causes pain. Anyone planning any weird pain-inducing activities then?
See you here Pat, get well.

Message: I went to the Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum in(name the city)and found out our own Pauley Vidad '77, was Rookie of the Year in 1984 as chosen by the Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour. Add her to the list of accomplished HHS athletes. There's an exhibit there where you can look up anyone who's bowled a 300 game. My brother Dan '80, did it in 1986. They print up a nice certificate for those bowlers who have bowled a perfect game. Interesting stuff there. Did HHS ever have a bowling team?
Akron? Hey Tom, Yes HHS had bowling clubs back in the 60s. We bowled at Hawthorne Bowl and later at Tropicana. I loved bowling.

Message: As Kelly said Mike Weathers is gone. I was able to talk to Mike in Feb. when he first entered the hospital. At that time he and his wife Sherry had hopes that things would get better. In the coming weeks I was in touch with Sherry and several other friends and it quickly became clear that Mike's condition was much worse than originally thought. We knew then it was a matter of time. RIP Mike, I will see you again one day.

Message: I've just returned from a "Bucket list" vacation; New Zealand, Australia and Fiji with Hawaii thrown in for fun. At a stop in N.Z. I noticed a black umbrella outside this snack shop, on the umbrella was "Hawthorne Coffee" -- yep, they served 'our towns' coffee right there. On the North Island in the Bay of Islands area the hotel/resort was named "Copthorne" ... I know, close but no cigar but, a reminder nevertheless. If YOU haven't made the journey yet; by all means do so, it was fantastic!
Thanks Jim, so you did that instead of Cruise Night?

Message: Oh Crazy Wayne...now you're starting to sound like Madman Muntz. The only difference is that Muntz never gave anything away for FREE! I could use a good slice of pizza and a free cold beer on Sept 13th as that's certainly when the heat wave starts, and since there seems to be no charge and no borders, we'll plan to be there. 2 weeks later there's our '64 reunion then the HHS picnic so I'm not sure my Italian nerves can take all this partying in such a short window of time. (yah, right)! We are officially Seniors without borders now.
