Message: On Saturday I attended the wedding of Barry Lafferty '77. Barry, aka Oso, had been a life long bachelor until then. He met his future wife, Stella, last year. It was a fun reception with Cougars from the 60s, 70s, and 80s having a good time at the Charthouse in Redondo Beach. I'm trying to figure out a way to get credit for multiple Cougar sightings. Jim Sloey, I need your creative math and reasoning skills to persuade John. Clark? Ha ha
Nice try Tom and Congratulations to Barry and Stella.

Message: And the winner is ...... Jim Raines with 19. You da Man! Congratulations and Happy Belated Father's Day. I'm sending John a check today to cover your Cougartown dues. And to Nancy, even though this was a Father's Day contest, you deserve special recognition for such a high number, 31, and because we all know it's a lot harder doing the job as "mom" so I'll cover your dues too. John, the $30 check's in the mail for Jim, Nancy and me. Go Cougars!
Well there you go. Thanks Tom for a fun contest and for covering the dues for yourself and our winners.

N/E side of the street. If you want to take advantage of a $10.00 off coupon on a sale of at least $50.00, log on to www.TNTfireworks.com put in some simple info and then print out your coupon. Schlep it over to our stand, kiss my husband's bald head for a $10.00 savings and more beer for the ice cooler. (ok, you don't really have to kiss Janny's bald head, but it couldn't hurt). All proceeds go to help the Hawthorne VFW continue with good work for our Veterans. See you there.
Thanks Til.

Message: Seeing Dan Dye's name on the record board reminds me of an incident that happened at the Inglewood High track. It was at the Inglewood Invitational Relays. The different teams all would find a place to set up camp. One team picked a spot just outside of the shotput ring. We tried to warn them that it wasn't safe there because of Dan's great range. They didn't believe us, as most high school guy's couldn't even come close, so they stayed. When Dan uncorked his first practice throw, it rolled right thru their camp, scared the crap out of them. They left quickly, they were lucky no one was hurt. I'm not sure that Dan was even aware of it.
I'm sure he was Ernie Thanks for the story.

Message: ME: Hello Clark: So you don't have enough kids and grandkids to win? ME: No I am a little shy of the winner but she is butting into father's day so it's not fair. Clark: How many times do you see your kids and grandkids? Me: Not enough. Clark: OK do I what I do with Cougar sightings. ME: LIE? Make-up the sighting? Exaggerate? How does that transfer to the contest with kids and grandkids. Clark: Take the number of kids times the number of times you see them monthly then take the number of grandkids by the same number and multiply that by 3-they are that much better to see. That should do it. Me: Gee thanks Clark! Clark: No problem I am off to Home Depot in Hawthorne I bet I see you there, got it?! OK I have 45+82=127! Actual numbers and I am so proud of them all. 10+8=18 I have 5 sons and I count their wives as our Daughters
OK then

Message: I had a Cougar sighting last night, I was at the Carson Nugget, in Carson City, Nevada, I was talking to the Bar Supervisor, I am not sure how we got on the subject of Hawthorne but I feel a little like Clark Millman because, it was Dan Lahair c/o 86, he said he played sports at HHS, I told him about C-Town so I hope to see him here.
Now THAT'S a Cougar Sighting. Thanks Cindy and thanks too for checking in. Haven't heard from you in awhile.

Message: Clark, John Baker posted a picture of the black felt/white plastic push-in lettering HHS T&F records, when it hung in the cafeteria, on CT eons ago. The only incorrectness was the year that you set the varsity pole vault record (since corrected), currently the second oldest heritage record after Dan Dye's shot put standard. Sleuth of sleuths, what I need for you to find, if they still exist are all of the old track and field score books. We kept them for each and every meet. Rumor had it that Coach Courtney had possession of them (not true according to Cheryl his widow), and also that Coach Bravo did, which he says he doesn't. My hope is that they still remain in the confines of dear old HHS. The El Molinos have some of the records, especially it the published a Spring supplement, since the yearbooks were published in advance of the end of the track season. I recently purchased a complete collection of "High School Track and Field News." There is also a website for all of the California State T&F meets (including video clips of races from Hawthorne's glory years) Both have filled in some of the HHS CIF, state and national records (mostly the Kye Courtney era), but little else. I want to recognize every HHS record 1954 to present. I know the difference between reality and expectations. I know, too, that it may never happen and I'm O.K. with that. It still doesn't diminish my attempt to try.

Message: So, we moved my MIL to a senior community near our home. This place is awesome, they call it "The Cruise Ship That Never Leaves Port." They serve 3 gourmet meals a day and do all your laundry and housekeeping, and have great activities and fun events for the residents. I got to join in for lunch one day and sat with a couple of the staff, one of whom, Jeff, happened to have lived in Hawthorne at one time (in the early 80's) for about 5 or 6 years. He's not a Cougar, but it's amazing how, over the years, I've met perfect strangers who had some connection or other with Hawthorne. We've had friends that we worked with for years who turned out to be either born in Hawthorne, or lived there as children or adults. One of the funniest coincidences was recently when I took my mom to the Thousand Oaks Senior Center to play bingo. We were invited to sit with one of the volunteers who was so friendly and welcoming to us- he was also playing bingo, and he helped us get our cards set up and helped us keep up with the calls. (We don't play bingo very often!) So he and I got talking and of course, he had lived in Hawthorne and raised his kids there- his kids are Cougars! AND to top it all off, he mentioned his sister-in-law had graduated HHS in (about) 1969...her last name was Ferrera... I said, is she related to Nicky Ferrera? (73)- He said YES! I remember Nicky from my freshman year at HHS, he was so friendly and popular! So it's still a small Cougar world... Clark has Cougar sightings; I have Six Degrees of Cougars events. As for kids - 1, and no grandkids yet... 2 more semesters of college to pay for and we are DONE!
Yes it's amazing how many people we run into far away from home have connections to Hawthorne or the local area. Thanks for sharing Sharon, we miss you out here.

Message: I have 3 kids and 6 grandkids. Not a record-breaker, but plenty enough for me! And, yes, I'll come hang out more here JB, but it seems a bit quiet right now. I see some of the class of '64 are going to the '63 reunion. We should have more intermixing at our age. You never know from year to year, though I plan to live forever.
Sign up for the 63 reunion Pat, I'm sure you'll see some old friends.

Message: My seven year quest for the holy grail of the HHS track team(the record board) ended last month when I was on campus looking for the Halcap sign. I found it collecting dust in the back of the coach's office in the new boys locker room. Yesterday I was near HHS with a friend who drives an explorer. I convinced him to stop at HHS for a minute. I commandeered one of the maintenance crew and got into the coach's office and pilfered the record board. Glen Crist has worked hard to update and complete all the track records and now his efforts will come to fruition. I'm having the board rekeyed by my locksmith so we can open it and update it with Glenns' info. Then principal Newell says we can put it up in the cafeteria where Kye Courtney wanted it to help build pride in the school. The national record in the mile relay has stood for 28 years now and all the current students should develop pride in past Cougars accomplishments!! Update on school construction: All classrooms on the East side of campus from the senior parking lot to the pool are gutted and ready for demolition. The new administration building on El Segundo is completed and ready for occupancy in the fall. Principal Mark Newell is happy about that as he is currently running his office out of a temporary classroom on the site of the old girls locker room.
Thanks Clark for help out. I knew where the board was 5 years ago. You should have asked

Message: Well, the Senior Stars show I was in, is done. What fun we all had doing the show, though it was much more work than I expected. Now to figure out what to do with all this spare time.
Hi Pat, you can hang out over here in Cougartown for awhile and rest up OR you can start rounding up classmates for next year's class of 64 50th Reunion. To all, especially the reunion year people, please make sure your contact information is correct on the Cougartown Info System so your reunion committee can find you.

Message: 8 emails and 4 facebook notices that I had to get in on this kids contest. I called JB this afternoon and between his phone and mine we almost ceased our friendship, no wait we did. In any event, I can't post until Sunday. I need to get in touch with Clark so I can figure out that new math he uses in deciding how many Cougar sightings he has had. The number with Clark's way of figuring should be in the 3 digits. Stay tuned. Oh and I received an email from Coach Sid a few days ago, he wanted to know if I knew some crazy guy from Hawthorne named Clark. He said he was going through Macy's yelling Hawthorne Cougars stand up sit down fight fight fight! Sid said when he got to him he denied he ever heard of Hawthorne. Five minutes later he hears over the PA, All Hawthorne Cougars free ipads in Electronics for the next 5 minutes.
So THAT'S how he finds the Cougars. Clark, guess the only fair thing to do is give your Cougar sightings to Jim.
