Message: Cougar Sighting! Ok, it might have been a little staged but Matt Peterson, c/o 74 was in my hood for a Wrestling Team reunion at Cal Lutheran University (his alma mater) and let me know he was coming. Got to have a nice afternoon visit. The last time I saw him was on a trip I took to Sacto for work a few years back and Anita Harmon Bell 69 hosted a little get together at her place. What fun that was! Matt looks great and, as it turns out, is quite the catalyst for reunions and get togethers. I reminded him that 2014 is the 40th for our class. He might just be convinced to spearhead a committee. ; ))
Hi Sue, Never too early to start planning reunions. Glad you two got to see each other.

Message: Finally had my out-patient lumpectomy surgery (stage 2), that turned into a 3 day stay at L.B Memorial. Lymph nodes removed & chemo & radiation therapy to start once I heal. I had so many nuclear tests done, CT scans to check if things had spread, & it had not! Bone scans, the 2nd bone marrow biopsy done bedside, that had gotten side tracked with this breast cancer issue that took presidence over the blood disorder & auto-immune disorder that is still undisclosed. I think when I got home Wednesday night, I stated to glow..lol. Quite possibly will need a bone marrow transplant..will get the results of the B.M Biopsy on Tuesday when I see my oncologist/hematologist. Thank you all for your emails & prayers, it got me thru this ordeal, & I'm getting better everyday. On another note: I have had some issues with my computer regarding setting up a new paypal account. I used to use it regularly about 9 years ago, but now have come upon some glitches that I can't get passed on their site. Is there anyone in the San Pedro/ SoBay area that is a techy that can help me with these issues? I have been gifted some Christion Dior & other high end designer items to help pay some of my bills that I have incurred thru this nightmare of health issues. I will be willing to pay for your time..I just need to get these things listed on ebay asap, & am so frustrated with not being able to resolve these problems..ugh :( Thanks! Enza

Message: Chaffee Ford brings back a small memory. When I first moved to Bakersfield I worked at a service station whose owner drove two fords with Chaffee Ford license frames. He said he bought them there because he had a friend who was a salesman there. Of course I told him of my ties to Hawthorne.

Message: Robert, So what did you have in your "'49 souped up blue ford"? Must'a been pretty hot in those days to have headers. I can't remember the name of the Ford Dealer on the corner. Danny Kieffer and I rode our bikes there to see the new pink and black '56 Ford Vic they had on the showroom floor.

Message: Class of 60'; drove both a 49' souped up blue ford and a 60' RED MGA sports car. Here's one for Al Murphy, I was on 120th street in the dead of night in my 49' ford reving my engine with open headers, next to Ken Bausman in his 46' ford; I had my license for a week, so didn't plan on drag racing! All of a sudden, I heard "GO"! We took off with a roar, as a policeman on a motorcycle pulled us over!!! I cried, Kenny yelled go, Just as Kenny cried Bob yelled go; the cop (was that you, Al?) said, nonchalantly, I yelled go. He gave us a written warning, with the condition we join a project of his, Lion's Speedway! Bob Wormus

Message: You guys were talking about fast cars in Hawthorne..my husband had the fastest car in town. I am unsure what the original body was-it was primer grey, no roof, definitely a sports car..he completely transformed it, engine and all..it was really light weight, and he put a corvette engine in it..he and his "Ocean Gate St". buddies called the car the "Frog" because when you gunned it, it would "hop" off the ground! The "shotgun" seat was like a milk crate..of course no seat belts..I do not wish to share where they got the engine..he and his buddies Allen Knighten, Butch Toice, Tim McAndrews, all worked in my exs' garage..my poor in-laws were so naive..My ex husbands name was David Green, and he was class of '64..he eventually got busted and paid his "dues"..he is now a very successful businessman, owns a mechanic shop up on Imperial Blvd..just another car story..but no one could beat that car... 9
Sounds like a fun car to me Susan, thanks for the story.

Message: $89!!! Man, when I was in Hawthorne my garage was full of dozens of those for the local clubs. My dad used to make them. He also made the letters and plaque at the Hawthorne pool, the letters at J.C. Penney's in Inglewood, and many other things around town. He also made hundreds of Grave markers most in Inglewood Park Cemetery.
Was your Dad's first name David? He could have been the original David Letterman

Thanks Sharon, Hope to see you and the girls there in April. I will try to keep the rain away

Message: So JB, if you will tell me now much money it will take to move that donation needle up to $5,000, I'll shoot off a little ol' check. Thanks to all the alumni that make it to the VFW breakfast. I loved sitting and talking finally and catching up. I've learned that 3 prunes can make a huge difference in your life thanks to Annie Rout. I have to admit that my Janny doesn't spare the horses on the food and the portions. Best $8.00 you'll ever spend. OK... now for that amount and don't be so stingy with the donations to the next generation of Cougars. You've all dropped more than that leaving the Block and Tackle. JW
Hi Til, We are $180 short of $5000. If you could pass the Bingo hat, that would be great and thanks very much.

Message: John, thank you for Cougartown. I just spent the most wonderful day at the Living Desert with Mr. Robert Kyllonen. He showed me all the exhibits and we were very fortunate that all of the big cats and the wolves decided to show themselves today. I got to feed a giraffe, which was a first for me. Did you know their tongues are purple to protect them from the sun when they are feeding? Mr. Kyllonen is the most gracious person. His company is so enjoyable and he has a great sense of humor. We shared memories, laughed, and had wonderful conversations regarding animals and the environment, and many other things too numerous to mention. Thank you Mr. Kyllonen. Wish I had had you for biology. I think we should have a mini reunion at the Living Desert. They have facilities for small gatherings. All of the docents are wonderful, but I still think Mr. K is the best of them all. Thank you again Mr. K, and thank you, John, for this site. As soon as I transfer my pics to the computer, I'll send pics of me & Mr. K.
Hi Sharon, glad you had a fun day with Mr. K. and thanks for the picture. The reason my tongue is purple is because I like grape popsicles.

Message: Another fun morning yesterday at the VFW breakfast! It is always so good to be able to visit with old friends. It seems that every time I attend, I see another friend whom I haven't seen in years. We had the pleasure of visiting with Ron Arias, whom I haven't seen in, maybe, 40 years. And as always, the b'fast was great...really restaurant quality! Thanks Jan and crew.
Yes it was a fun and delicious time at the old VFW. Thanks Tom for coming out, along with Ron Arias, and many more. Jan, I have to say my Denver Omelet was over the top. Thanks for all you do to keep the VFW breakfasts alive and well. Best 8 buck breakfast in town.

Message: To all those Cougars out there...just a friendly reminder that the Hawthorne VFW is having our monthly breakfast tomorrow starting at 9am. Lots of food for a modest donation of $8.00. Hope to see some new faces along with those who have been supporting us for many years. Having to be in the back of the kitchen most of the morning I really don't see the new faces let alone some of the regulars...but your friends from HHS are there to welcome you to this event. There's football playoffs happening in the canteen so you might even want to consider joining us for an afternoon of football. And for those who enjoy a few days away from the grindstone, we're having a three day bus trip to Laughlin on March 10-12. Leaving Sunday morning and staying at the Riverside Hotel for two nights and returning on Tuesday. Call Judy if you're interested - 310-793-5910 and she will sign you up. Hope some of you can join us tomorrow and in a few months, too. Jan
Thanks Jan, The Hawthorne VFW is always a fun place to hang out, great breakfast at a decent price and it's all for a very worthy cause. No better way to thank a Vet, so come on down and eat with all our Cougartown pals.
