Message: In regards to Sharon's Question ... Could you be thinking of "Beach Bum Burt's"? It was a cool tropical place. They had great food and drinks! Loved that place. It even had a palm roof! How they got away with that I,ll never know! And i think the guy that owned Beach Bum Burt's also owned another cool restaurant in Marina del Rey. I think it was the "Wharehouse" ??

Message: Thanks for the vote of confidence I can be no help with knowledge for any boat that capsized in King's Harbor in the early 80s. The closest disaster I know of was the 1988 pier fire/storm which destroyed several businesses including Castagnola's Restaurant. Sorry.

Message: Jorge and Sharon, I wonder if you are thinking of a tropical bar/restaurant that was called Latitude 20 I believe. Can't remember where it was, but it was a favorite for Burkett special celebrations. My sweet mother in law, Velma, especially loved the tiki type drinks there...she was such a wild woman!

Message: About the nightclub on the boat in King Harbor that sunk... I remember the nightclub well....Dirty Sally's...The ship was the Lady Alexandra...Below is some info I found about... The owner was former "Our Gang" comedies star Chuck Johnston (He played the character of "Stinky Davis.") In addition to being the master lessee of the Redondo Beach Marina, he owned a variety of businesses in King Harbor, including the Blue Moon Saloon. In the late 1970s, he reopened the restaurant under the ship's original name, the Lady Alexandra. A disco/nightclub, Dirty Sally's, was added. The ship also became the home of the Palos Verdes Yacht Club. But the ill-fated vessel would soon meet its match. A record high tide, combined with wind-whipped waves, battered the Lady Alexandra in mid-January 1980, suffering enough damage to close down the businesses for a few days.

Message: Sharon girl; Maaaan!!, in 1981 I was already headed towards middle age, I was 37 Y/O, had kids in school and was a gun slinger for the county. Spending most of my nights in the Ghetto pushing a black & white around, I had finally seen the light LOL. By that time, my demographics had changed, I lived in Yorba Linda & I stayed closer to home (most of the time). I'm sure that by that time (1981) many changes had occured in King Harbor, I don't recall the boat/ship you refer to that rolled in the bay, if anyone knows, it would be our historian, Jerry. Jorge

Message: Nope, it wasn't the Blue Moon Saloon. I remember that place, spent many evenings there, but I never noticed that it was crawling with cops and firemen. However, my gang didn't turn 21 until 1981 so I think it had transitioned to the yuppie crowd by then. We also spent a lot of time at Pancho and Wongs. And there was a tropical themed restaurant/bar in that area as well- they served a drink called a "Potted Palm." Anyone remember the name of that place? As for the mystery nightclub that was a retired cruise ship, it was moored at what I keep thinking was King Harbor, down in the same general area of Blue Moon, Pancho and Wongs, and ?? whatever the tropical place was. Remember that I went sailing with friends when she rolled over so that we could see what she looked like from the ocean view, since all we saw in the paper was the view from land. I spent a little more time trying to find it on the inter webs but no luck. So here's a new question. Little Deuce Coupe is one of my favorite songs. Can one of you car guys translate the technical jargon? "Flat head mill." "Ported and relieved and stroked and bored." "Lake pipes," "Coming off the line", and what the heck is a "Little Deuce Coupe"?

But that was a few years ago, and now the best Janny can do is slowly roll over in bed without losing his salonpas patch. (emphasis on slowly) See you all tomorrow at the VFW breakfast.

Message: Yes, I do remember well the barges off Redondo and fished on them several times. You could hook up a ride for a nominal cost at the Redondo Pier and get a half, full day ticket, or even overnight tickets. I only went a handful of times but my brother, Roy Ryse was our fisherman and went very often. He would bring home the enough bonito and barracuda to provide the whole family with a great meal many times. Sometimes that would be supplemented by my personal favorite, halibut. There were three boats off the Redondo coastline that I remember. As mentioned the Old Sacramento which held about 500 fisherman sunk in the winter storms of 1968. There was also the New California (sunk?) and the Isle of Redondo (built in 1980 as a fishing barge and the last to go in 1998). But they are all gone now. The last was sold and towed through the Panama Canal to the Gulf. Probably victim to increased cost of maintenance and insurance. Another wonderful memory many of us had growing up in Hawthorne that is lost forever.

Message: JB; That was the ship name the "Blue Moon", the only other boats that I ever heard about that sank in King Harbor was an occasional pleasure boat that sank or caught fire at the gas docks. This was usuall caused because they forgot to blow the gas fumes out of the bilge before starting their motor, and hey, I am/was a long way from macho, I just liked to have fun, have all my life, guess that's why I was in trouble most of it, never took things to serious, just cruised. Message: Just read Judy's post and all I have to say is some marital play should be kept private.....I LOVE Janny, but a naked sommersault???? I think I remember some sort of plunge at the beginning of the Redondo Beach pier. Never went in, but looked through very steamy windows to see what was going on inside. That was the late 50's as I recall. That was also where I had my first taco after arriving from the East coast. Small little stand on the sidewalk end of the pier which created my love for those darn things.

Message: Armand; Your thinking of the Old "Sacramento Ferry" Redondo used to have three fishing barges off the local coastal waters, the water taxi was boarded at the Redondo Bch. Pier. I don't remember how much it cost, but you could travel from one barge to the other all day for just one price, you wouldn't get that today. The Sacramento was the farthest one out, about 3 miles, it sank in a very bad storm many, many years ago before they could tow it into a safe harbor, I don't know what happened to the other barges. Jerry Miles probably knows, I think this was a topic (Redondo fishing barges) some time back. Jorge

Message: Sharon girl; I think you are refering to the "Blue Moon Saloon" in Redondo Bch.. It was a cop bar and a lot of local firemen hung out there as well, only because we let them LOL, they felt safe around cops, knowing we wouldn't let any bad guys pick on them and, they were bait to keep the happy people away from us LOL. As a mater of fact, the old Fire Chief from Hermosa Bch. lives here at Chaparral C/C, I play golf with him frequently. We have discussed a few of the bar fights that occurred there and we discovered that we were both there at the same time, however, I didn't know him back then. He knew Rich. Velasco who managed the place (Blue Moon), Rich was/is still a friend of mine and now manages an RIU rseort/Casino in Aruba, small world. Jorge

Message: Sea water doesn't sting your eyes at all. The eye irritation you experienced when you went in the water at 26th Street was the result of fine grains of sand churned up by the surf. If you had gone farther out, past the surf line, and opened your eyes under water, it wouldn't have stung at all--unless you had applied sunscreen too close to, or on, your eyelids. Ask any surfer. You always open your eyes when duck diving or turning turtle under a wave. Same thing for a well-maintained salt water pool. You can swim laps with no need for swim goggles.

I remember a dance club on a ship... memory fades... anyone remember?

Message: Judy, it was mostly simple economics. Salt water did not have to be conditioned. They just regularly exchanged it with the Pacific Ocean so no cost for chemicals and little maintenance. In Redondo's case it was also heated virtually for free from the byproduct of the heat created by Pacific Light and Power's steam plant (originally built to generate electricity for the Red Cars).

Message: I have to ask why oh why would "anyone" want to swim in a salt water pool. I would think that the ocean is the cheapest salt water pool you'd want to be in & I'm serious. Salt water stings your eyes, dries out your skin, and if swallowed would make one retain water, so answers please. As for SPEEDOS, just remember you 60 something year old boys, what use to be up tight and outta sight now hangs a lot lower, so you'd better choose the long speedos. Sorry if I've offended anyone, but life isn't always fair. Besides, I've seen Howie Noodleman do a sommersault naked. Sorry... the life thingy again. ( am I in trouble Sidney??)
