Message: In regards to Paco's question "Do they still decorate Hawthorne Blvd." the answer is yes. I was down there Saturday and they had the "Hawthorne Elves" decorating. They started at Imperial and when I saw them they were up to 118th St. I haven't been back to see how far they had gotten. Maybe next weekend when I am down that way, I will drive down Hawthorne Blvd. to see how much was done.

My father used to take us to Exposition Park with the trees all lit up, my father being a ucla grad, must have made him happy! 10 years ago today my favorite Beatle, George passed.

Message: I just saw both Michael and Bob's posts on football. I thought this website was supposed to be about girls at HHS? First Paco is such a SC homer he gave me UCLA and 51 points so my Bruins covered. Second and way more important the '53HHS team. John you were there same as me at their reunion last year. Those guys still look like they could play. Being with those coaches made it very clear how they got the most out of their guys talent. Last I had a long conversation with John Cooper that night and he talked about all the mistakes we '63 guys made against his Mira Costa team. John's Mom fed us that day at the snack bar and then John tried to beat us to death that night.

Message: Reading Gary Bickers remembering the 1953 football squad. Joe Contestible, Joe Gordon, B B Jones, John Cooper, Bill Haynes, Cecil Cooper, Ron Mix, who went on to star at USC and 10 years with the Chargers. That team won the CIF championship with Joe C, at QB. Jerry Nicholson QB'd the next year and they went to the CIF championship game. Good stuff, thanks for the memories

Message: Good morning Cougs. Hope everyone had a great holiday. I know I did watching my Trojans put a 50-zip a....Wupping on the little sisters of mercy aka: UCLA. I know that Gary Bickers is probably on suicide watch right now after the massacre. Reminded me of the battle of little big horn. Did you know that if Custer would have used the gattalin guns that were offered who knows?? He felt that they were to cumbersome to move. Yes you are welcome for the history lesson. Now back to UCLA, they will have to petition the NCAA for a bowl berth!! Are you kiddin me?? The toilet bowl is probably available!!! Can't wait for next year when USC can go to a bowl. Message: Mr. Helvey had a well-earned reputation for being a no-nonsense, particularly tough taskmaster. His math class was regimented, to say the least. One memorable day, I entered the classroom on time, however, by the time I sat down, Mr. Helvey had already delivered assignment instructions to the class. When I turned to ask the person next to me, "What page?," I was the immediate recipient of a perfect "beanball," in the form of a chalkboard eraser, fully loaded with the dusty, white, powder. It wasn't just a brushback pitch designed to intimidate. It was a "beanball" intentionally delivered with authority and accuracy, as evidenced by the rectangular white mark imprinted on my forehead, and the white chalk dust that settled like a bad case of dandruff on my black shirt. Amazingly, in order to find his target(me), he was forced to "thread the needle" between the two girls sitting in front of me. In addition to my overwhelming embarrassment, I was particularly struck (no pun intended) by such an amazing feat - and I am to this day.

Message: HAPPY THANKSGIVING to you John, and to all HHS Cougars. Everyone party responsibly and don't eat so much you have to have your tummy pumped like my Uncle Johnny did when he was a kid. There is not a Thanksgiving that goes by where this incident, which happened probably in the late twenties or early thirties, doesn't come up. I'm sure you all have family holiday stories that are related every holiday season. Again, Happy Thanksgiving to all.

John, I think the Gasbah was at 154th and Hawthorne Blvd. Cheapest gas in town. Gerry Brassfield- you really stirred up some old memories of Lawrence and Mastin Drug Stores, Plaza Theater, Broadway Circle, etc. I also grew up in the area in the 50's and 60's at 232 Birch, 4-5 blocks west of you. Those were happy times. Hope you post again with more memories.
