Message: Great pictures of my coaches. I have good stories of both Alex Bravo and Lou Penella but this is a family website so ask me when you see me. We were so lucky to have these guys plus Sid and Toby in those days. Sid said to us the last time we saw him he was new to high school coaching and he thought the load of talent he saw was normal and would just keep repeating itself. We all live and learn.

Message: Cougar sighting. Over the weekend during a cruise to Ensenada I introduced myself to a couple sitting down next to us at dinner. They were celebrating their anniversary. At some point the discussion turned to where everyone was from. As it turns out, one of our new table neighbors was Shelly Wolfe (Wales) HHS '79, now living in Oregon and Palm Desert. My sister Jamie, also HHS '79 was there as well and so an interesting and fun discussion ensued. There were about 2,000 other passengers on the "boat" so what are the chances of randomly sitting next to another Cougar? It's a small world.

Message: Finally a very legitimate Cougar sighting with no stalking or cheesecake involved. My family doctor refered me to an endocrinologist. After I checked in with the receptionist, the doctors assistant came to get me and she said "Do you know who I am?" Memories may fade as we get older but one should never forget the best looking women on campus. Still very pretty, it was easy to recognize Sherry (Blackwell) Erickson('76). We chatted about our lives after HHS and classmates we are still in touch with. Even though we ran with different crowds we knew each other and had good old HHS in common! It was nice to finally have a Cougar sighting of someone over the age of 20!

Message: Halloween night I had something more important to do besides pass out candy - the first pre-season basketball game for the number one ranked Baylor Lady Bears. So I put out 2 big bowls of candy and a few decorations with a sign wishing everyone a Happy Halloween and please take a handful of candy. To the credit of all the trick or treaters in our area (and there are usually a lot of them), the decorations were intact and there was even some candy left in the bowls.

Message: Hi John, I know the Island feeling. Since I moved from my old Hawthorne neighborhood, I think I have had about 5 kids come to my door. All my neighbors have the lights off, so the street looks deserted! I really enjoyed those Game programs from Paco's pics!! It was nice seeing all those old-time business names and I forgot that "Gas" Stations had been called "Service" Stations, wow, was life really that simple?? I didn't remember the HHS Dad's club but that is a tradition they should really bring back at all schools. The only thing I am really glad about is that teenage girls don't have to wears skirts to do construction work anymore, especially going up ladders (see Gunga Den pics)!!! LOL!!

Message: I think all the trick or treaters were in my neighborhood. We started out with 300 pieces of candy - went to the store and bought 4 more bags. By the end of the night we had about 20 pieces left. My neighbors go all out with the decorations so each year we get more and more kids. I love it. Reminds me of all the fun we had as kids.

Message: I had 200 kids come to my door on Halloween as well, San Pedro reminds me so much of what Hawthorne & Inglewood were like in the 50's & 60's. For the most part, it's a great family oriented community. On another note I just wanted to put the message out to anyone that graduated from St. Joesphs in 1970, we are having a reunion next summer. Contact me if you would like more info on this event. Thanks again John for providing such a great medium for all of us Cougars to stay in touch.

Message: I was tricked instead of treated. Some knuckleheads were speeding around the neighborhood during the wee hours of Halloween morning throwing huge pumpkins at parked cars. They got my truck good putting a nice dent on the cab and pumpkin splat everywhere else. Happy Halloween!! When I was a kid the worse thing we did to anyone's ride was "kipe" the bullet or Gemini space capsule shaped chrome valve stem covers from the tires of low riders and then "cut out". It's funny that when I had my own car, years later, my ill gotten collection of chrome valve stem covers gradually disappeared from my '65 Mustang. What goes around comes around. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you is the only social justice I believe in.

Message: Jim and I have never had so many kids on Halloween. We had between two and three hundred adorable kids in their costumes. Loved their enthusiasm and their courtesy. All of them thanked us for their treat. We had a good time. It reminded me of my childhood in Hawthorne. There were always so many kids out and about, great memories.

Message: Had a lovely evening in the company of a graduate from HHS's first graduating class. Joe Mazzotta. Lots of festive fun listening to perhaps the best stereo system this side of Steven Spielberg's. His wife, Sherry, was the Secretary at Hawthorne Intermediate for 10 years also, so it was fun chatting about those bygone days. Joe had a (in the day) Studebaker with a Cadillac engine that had to have the engine pulled to change the spark plugs. You car guys! I went the other way -- I had a Cadillac in which I put a Singer Sewing Machine engine. Not too much power, but I cut some fancy patterns in front of Taco Tio.

Message: Well I can't speak for the others but I've been out all day. I went to Skippy's for lunch 'cause they had a sale; cheeseburger, fries and a small Coke for 16¢,(you know it's usually 22¢) Then went over to Auction City and bought one of those velvet Elvis pictures; really neato. Then on the way back we stopped at Curries for a double dip. Had a little trouble with the Packard but we managed to make it home OK, though a little late, so we missed most of The Ed Sullivan Show. Anyway, gotta go now. Gotta get my lunch pail ready. It's back to the plant in the morning!
