Message: Ah! The summer of 72. 26th. St. was the place for some decent body surfin. For wheels I had full time use of my bros 69 Boss 302 Mustang for most of the summer while he was on a honeymoon hiatis. Would go down there at least several times a week. Hang out, body surf, a few brews and some smoke, made for a fine summer day. Free parking even! Good times I will never forget. BC

Message: Wife and I will be in town next weekend for the multi-class reunion. Having lived in N. California for many years (decades) now, we are clueless regarding dining favorites. Can locals suggest a nice breakfast spot in the Manhattan Beach area, as well as a Mexican Restaurant with decent ambiance and excellent food? Looking forward to seeing my old friends next weekend!

Message: Cal Kappen: I remember Ray Quinones loved the groups, the Velvets, The Scarlets, etc., as do I. I understand he made a few records himself as Rosie & Ron (So Dearly) and also as Ray and Rene ( Queen of My Heart) Does anyone know what happened to him? I heard he passed away. Hey, Eric Larson: Back in the late 50's when I didn't have 50 cents to rent an air raft, we called it body surfing. You caught a good size wave in the middle and rode it into shore. You were in a position like an Oscar (head down , shoulders against your chest.)If you caught the wave too high you would get dumped and eat sand. If it was a powerful wave it would take you all the way to shore. Happy Birthday , Jerry Miles. See you all tonight at Cruise Night.
Happy Birthday Jerry...see you tonight, Bob.

Message: Russ Jacobsen, Thank you for jogging my memory. I remember the room in back of your house. Not the other stuff! The nights I spent there studying and contemplating my future. I remember your collection of 45's. I sure miss Bruce Johnson. I was in his wedding when he married the girl from Culver City. Have you ever got a hold of Jim Hoel? I still remember Ray Quinones and his love of music. Where did Jerry Cross wonder off to? I worked for TWA as a ramp serviceman and Jerry was a maintenance foreman. We sure have some great memories. Thanks for being my friend!

Message: This is to Cal Kappen… you had to have the Penney’s Towncraft “Pack-Knit” shirts. If your parents only got you the plain Towncraft ones they were not as cool. If you locate where Harmon gets his Tee’s let me know. I also wanted to comment on your post on the 18th. I was floored when I saw your reference to Skim Boarding without a skim board and only using your body. I have only seen one human do this. My father would show off at the beach when we were kids by running along the area where the water would wash up on the shore. He would launch himself in a shallow dive and fly on his chest on only a couple inches of water. How he did it has always been a mystery. He is still alive but at 90+ he can’t run fast enough to show me how it’s done. Cal, you are much younger than him, when will you give lessons? Please, at least let me video you doing it so people will believe it is possible. Only my brother, sister and buddy Mike Smith (HHS 68 Sector 1) have see this amazing feat. When you quipped about it I was encouraged to think there may be others that know the secret of this lost magic trick.

Message: Thanks Cal... not going to mention sleeping under the Banana trees you helped plant one night by the showers where all of us rowdy dudes, now this won't sound right, stayed the night so we could catch an early wave, whether body surfin or boards. Also the fact that you didn't mention, the 26th St. post caper or the "Room" where all trophys were held after being gathered from the beach or the movie studios. Boy , my buddy...I LOVE YA MMAANN!! Message: Oh Yeah....26th St. Every teen in America wanted to live like we did back in the 60s. Waves, surf music, tanned bodies, sun bleached hair, boards, etc. etc. Didn't get much better than that. Does anybody else remember the little bakery down from 26th St around where the burgers were I think? I still remember the early morning apple turnovers and napoleans they were famous for. Nobody had any money, but not sure I could now afford the car (57' Chevy convertible) and the longboards we had at the time. Geez if we only really had understood how good we had it then.

Message: Penneys Towncraft XL T-shirts! Gone but not forgotten! I saw CSI and Mark Harmon had a squared away T-shirt on and wondered where he got his T's. Towncraft had a thick weave shirt with a collar that never stretched. Maybe I should ask Harmon where he got his! Does anyone have his phone number?

Message: Thank God we are talking about the beach. Thank you Howard for the great picture. That is the bill I remember. Speaking of Bill; Bill Daquila and I took 3 months at First Street in Hermosa learning how not to kill ourselves or get killed before we would ever go in the water at 26th street. I remember I learned on a half balsa wood and half foam board made by Gary Moore who lived across the street from me. I think once I learned I had at least 12 boards over the next 3 years. Drove my mom and dad nuts.

Message: So if you want this to be automatic except for adding coordinates for the homes on the map why not add the coordinates first on the map for each address and if a CT member sees his address he simply clicks at that address to add his/her name and that way the addresses will all be set up uniformly. Well just another thought. ļ
But what if some jerk clicks and add a bunch of nonsense?

Message: 26th St.- We used to go to the beach there when we were kids. Our mom or dad would drop us off for the day. We were given enough money to rent a surf mat. Before surfboards we had rubber canvas mats we would use to ride the surf. I remember having my chest worn off from the sand and rubber canvas acting like sand paper. I remember the mat rental place and little restaurant that sold hamburgers. It was down south about six blocks. When we got older and started to ride boards we had to walk from home to the beach carrying our surfboards down Rosecrans to Highland and then all the way down to 26th St. We would walk past the free parking. In those days there wasn't a life guard station with restrooms. When we got into high school and started driving we sometimes were permitted to take the car to the beach. I would say we walked carrying our boards most of the time. Winter time was a lonely time at 26th St. Not too many showed. Weekends were a mess at 26th St. If you drove you had to walk a mile to the beach right past the free parking. I dated a girl from Mira Costa. She lived at 26th St. and the Strand. Her name was Alberta Hitchcock. Her and her brother were into beach volleyball. Her brother Sam was exceptional. Anyway 26th St. didn't take off until the girls showed up. That's when it got interesting! I remember body surfing with one fin. Before we had those round plywood scimmers, we would just use our bodies to skim the surf. I remember listening to the portable radio and laying in the sand drying off with salt crystal all over. The beach was my life until I had to get a job. What a bummer!

Message: After a morning of hot 26th waves, who couldn't resist a "cool one" after retiring to the Snake Pit. Our choice? Spring Beer!! A collection to pay the said Spring Beer and when the coffers reached $3.27. A runner was dispatched (usually Mike Conway, Howie's cousin) to the Thriftymart on El Segundo/Shoup. A case of Spring came packed loose and usually warm. But we were in heaven, waves, sun, babes and Spring. It don't get much better....
