Message: The magic just keeps on happening. Tuesday night at Hawthorne City Hall was so special. The Mayor and Council gave proclamations to Chris Montez and named Dec.14th as Chris Montez day. Having Chris there truly shows what a gem of a guy he is. He even said he would like to make a cruise night! Then, the class of 1960 was honored with its own proclamation. Rich, Mary and many other alumni were on hand. Rich brought lots of displays and gave the Hawthorne city staff Cougar Pom poms and megaphones. The dais was all scarlet and gold. A great big thank you to Mayor Guidi, Tom Quintana and all the city officials for recognizing Chris and the class of 1960. It was just great! I also have to agree that Huell Howser needs to check in sometime. Cougartown outshines anything that facebook could ever do. Who knows, it could happen.
Thanks Bob and Karen, and I agree. Very nice of Mayor Larry Guidi to honor our alumni. A big thanks to the City of Hawthorne.

Message: Dear Dean, I didn't know that you also worked at Clarks? What year's did you work there? 'Top Mop'...that's funny. Remember the upstairs break room that was all glass windows so you culd 'peer' down over the store? You must of been crushing those boxes & at the same time 'honed' your pitching/batting arm, 'cause your talents in baseball, as I recall, were exceptional. You were built like a Conquisitor, no wonder they didn't have to give you no stinking blade :) Brains & Brawn..a double threat! However, there was MUCH competition with all the cute boys from Boys AND Clarks..what's a girl to do? You should of been more persistent, I would of not played so hard to get. You were a bit shy around the ladies, & your 'charm' took a while to shine, as I recall. Your right, I might of 'overplayed' a hand in 1972..but you know it's all about the 'Chase':) AND, the tall blonde assistant mgr. at Boys was Caroline Rauser, her husband is a buddy of my brother John, they used to 'Cruise' Foster's & the Blvd back in the day. I think that is how John meet his wife Cheryl, JB were you around when my bro dated Cheryl? Tony Romero was the tall manager w/a thick ancient who was transfered to the Marina store. OH, I too worked at Calif. Donuts '70-72, Skip Smith was the owner, & would treat, on many occasions, his employees to lunch at La Fiesta..yummy! Madeline what years did you work there? I started out making snowcones out in front of Boys, does anyone remember that, & then got promoted to making donuts..warm glazed buttermilk bars were the best! Bags, & bags of free donuts every nite to take home, my dad was the king of donuts...my friends still talk about it! Free food, my papa just couldn't resist. Fun times working w/so many of my classmates in that litte mini mall..there was always a party, after work! :)

Message: Not much to tell, Steve. I attended a very nice Christmas dance with a beautiful Cougarette. I can see from the picture I was still wearing my R. H. Dana graduation suit. I do believe that was the night I learned about “Cry Parties” though. If I remember right, Paula mentioned she was missing her friends Cry Party. Dummy that I am, I had to ask what that was. She explained it was a party that girls had on the night of a big dance if they had not been asked out. To this day I’m not sure she was not disappointed to miss the party but I hope not.

Also was Scott Stallmo from Mira Costa a (72 grad), some may know him as he played baseball there and pony league, and then discovered John Frodsham was his coach, my friends late brother. It was great to connect with them! Thanks John!

Message: I too was a employee of A.D Clark. The baby food and pet food aisles were my domain. I had previous training on the mop at Woolworth's so I moved up a pay grade at Clark's and I got a box cutter with razor blades. Sorry Dean. I worked the 3pm - 12am. I always volunteered to retrieve the shopping carts around 9pm when Foster's was full. The Asst. Mgr always knew where I was, but he couldn't catch me. Jerry Miles' date in Paco's Pic was Paula Arnold. Anything you want to add, Jerry

Message: Hi Jerry, thank you for the info on Denny, I'm glad he's alive and well.....John you're right Huell does cover alot of those types of historic places and people and you're still a youngster yet but one day I can seriously see him covering what a gem of a place the city of Hawthorne was back in the day and its history and it has quite alot and you are the glue that keeps all of the people who were lucky enough to live there and experience growing up there, and also for Paco and all of his fabulous pictures past and present. Especially the older pictures of all different families which can't help but bring back memories of one's own families. The hairdos, the old cars, which are classic now, the tinsel on the Christmas trees, they were universal. But more importantly they are priceless!!! Merry Christmas
Thanks Madeline, that's what it's really all about.

Message: This message is for you John Baker. I've never had the pleasure of meeting you but in a way I feel I know you in a way just by this absolutely wonderful site that you have created and maintained all these years. It's really quite amazing because you make it possible to contact people that we may have lost complete contact with over the years. I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for all of what you do and I'm sure you've maybe seen Huell Houser's California Gold where he goes all over this great state of California to bring us stories of the old past and the present...well I think someone should tell him about you and the tradition you have carried on all of these years and I think he would agree that you John Baker with what you have created with Cougartown would agree you would definitely fall in the category of California's "Scarlet and Gold"!!!! Many thanks........
Thanks for the nice thoughts Madeline but California Gold....really? I think we better have a few more Cruise Nights and Picnics first. I mean Huell goes to see ghost towns and famous 70 year old hot dog places. I don't think he's visited Disneyland yethas he?

Message: Hi Carl, yes you're soooo right about them, especially Dennis, he was the oldest and Bruce always tried to live up to his brothers reputation but never could which actually made him even a lttle more dangerous but they were friends of my brothers and his friends Al White and Steve Westphalen who I sadly believe passed away years ago. I never knew the younger brother Jeff but I know of the pool hall you may be talking about, it was right on Imperial Hwy across the street from The Cockatoo Hotel. Do you remember the big pool hall that was located on Hawthorne Blvd where the circle and park were over by Birch Ave where they eventually put the Hawthorne Mall in? It would have been somewhere in the vicinity where The Broadway store was located. Well nice meeting you, I don't think I knew you when I was at Hawthorne High. Thank you for the memories!
The Crystal Palace was the pool hall on Imperial.

Message: It's great to read about all the folks who worked at Clark's and Boys. I was the absolute worst gift wrapper at Clark's - always felt so bad for the poor shoppers when they saw the finished product. My packages still leave a great deal to be desired - mostly because I'm really cheap, and if I don't have holiday paper I will use newspaper and dress it up with red ribbon instead of buying wrapping paper. I worked at Boys, too, but not in Hawthorne (I worked at the Carson store). My sister, Roni, did work at the Hawthorne Boys for a while, then at the Boys in Marina del Rey. Great times and memories. My mom shopped at the Hawthorne Boys for many years, working hard to feed all the 'T' sisters.

Message: Madeline, I remember the Zumwalts….I believe they lived on 140th street not too far from the 405. I think Ron Treat (68) lived close and probably knows better. Dennis and Bruce were older and had frightening reputations as bad asses. If you were introduced to them by the right people they would typically let you live, and were actually pretty cool guys. I have a fond memory of underage beer guzzling and pool playing with Denny at a little place on the north side of Imperial highway that was close to where Tommy’s was. I knew their younger brother, Jeff, better and shared many adventures with him and his girlfriend, Janet, and others. One exhilarating memory was when Jeff was aboard my Hobie Cat when we got into a group of grey whales off of Rocky Point one day. Having those monsters coming up beside the boat was awesome. Overtime we have lost contact and I haven’t seen any of the Zumwalts in years. Thanks for the memory jogger!

Message: I guess Hawthorne's a small world. Enza, I was a Top Mop at Clark's and came in nights to sweep and mop every aisle and take garbage out back where I had no blade for cutting and resorted to punching out boxes to flatten them for the garbage bin (I think Manny Pacquio started out this way and toughed his hands, but I don't recommend it). I used to spend extra time with the girls at the soda fountain area, at least until the Super Mr. Putnam pushed me along. I recall that at least one of these Clarks Babes had beautiful Sicilian complexion. She was a demure type who loved to flirt, act innocent and play hard to get. I think she overplayed her hand in retrospect. I wonder who she was, you or your older sister?!?!
IT WAS ENZA!!

A Special Hello to Madelyn Ryan. I took care of your mother for awhile. You lived across from her door with a few daughters to keep yourself very busy! In remembering 118th and Hawthorne Blvd. you got it right and I think that restaurant was "La Fiesta". Hope you and family are doing well. I remember Bill and Jimmy and your 3 daughters? You may be a Grandma by now? Keep in touch and update me soon, ok? Has anyone seen or know Gary Wesche? Please let him know I'd like to talk with him once again. Also Debbie and Sharon Farraro. Thank you and make your day Beautiful! Nice meeting you John Baker at the Chris Concert. I was sitting right in front of you with the other (Cathy Rodgers) taking lotsa pictures. Hey Cougars Big News, Jamie Litton and I got together on Nov. 20th & 21 for a visit. He was my crush in 5th grade at Eucalyptus. A very nice guy and great sense of Humor. Message: First dear friends I would like to thank all of you who remembered about the twice a day mail delivery in Hawthorne back in the day!!!! Enza yes I certaining do remember the ice cream counter in Clark Drugs!!! I remember the triple scoops for less than a dollar!!! And boy oh boy do I remember Mr Putman!!! He was quite an imposing man, he was so tall and I remember his black rimmed glasses. I never worked at Clark Drugs but shopped there all the time and always went to the pharmacy located in the very back of the store. I also remember the Boston Store as well. One of my first " real" jobs was at Lindberg's Nutrition located at the Crenshaw and Imperial Shopping Center and The Boston Store was also there and I remember the gift wrapping was located right in the front of the store. Also The Boys Market in Hawthorne, I worked in the Califonia Donut store that was actually located in the market. It was cool because at the end of our shift the manager would let us take home a dozen donuts every day, that was great for awhile... then my mother said if you bring one more donut in this house that's it!!!! Do you remember the tall blonde manager May? Also I believe the other manager's name was Tony? Tall guy with dark hair, he eventually moved to the store located in Marina Del Rey. My brother Bill Ryan worked there after school as a bagger, did you know him? Remember in that shopping center there was The Boys Market, then I believe there was a shoe store then there was a restaurant I believe a really good Mexican restaurant but I can't remember the name, of course Clark Drugs...then there was a little dirt space where at Christmas time they would sell Christmas trees..but at the very end there was a store a five and dime by the name of S.S. Kresge's I think the name was, I could be wrong but something like that. Thanks for the great memories. PS, also there was Orbit Cleaners, The Town Squire for Men and there was a dress for women and also the Mop Shop a hairdresser and Crocker Bank on the corner.
Thanks for the memories Madeline. La Fiesta was the restaurant.
