Message: Paco, you picked out those two movies like you were looking into my head. I remember seeing The Thing at the Plaza. My mother took us to an evening show. We walked from our place near Inglewood Ave. and 138th Street. It seemed like a very long walk at the time. I remember hiding behind the seat in front of me. There’s a scene where they open some container and a dead dog falls out. It was very quiet in the theatre, and there I am hiding with my eyes closed. Every girl in the audience screamed at the same time. I almost needed to change my underwear. Absolutely so scary that I remember it like it was yesterday and I think it was 1951. I believe in 1954 or thereabouts I saw The Creature from the Black Lagoon in 3D. But I saw it or let’s say I went to see it in Inglewood at the United Artist. I say I went to see it because in fact I was so spooked that I spent most of the time in the lobby. I didn’t really see it till it played at the Plaza. But I don’t think it was in 3D there. Was it? I’ve enjoyed reading all this shared nostalgia. It brings back simpler times and in so many ways better times. Cougars, especially those of us that grew up in the fifties, how blessed we were. Anyway, sensational memories folks…. Keep’em coming. Thanks, Jim Peppers

Message: I agree with Howard and George; Creature from the Black Lagoon was so tough on me I was out in the lobby within the first 3 minutes. If you remember the movie was in 3D. When they found that creature's mummified hand and arm sticking out of that ledge, I was soooo gone.

Message: Plaza scary pics...the original "THE FLY." ( body of a man - hand, leg and face of a fly ) One thing I never forgot & could never figure out was that the only nutrition the fly asked for was a bowl of milk laced with bourbon. To this day I think he was ordering a cheap verson of a Brandy Alexander.
Yes, THE FLY!!

Message: I used to dream of being held captive by Dale Evans and Annie Oakley. Jim Bowie would come by and cut the rope binding me to a tree, and with the help of Yancy Derringer and Lash LaRue we would teach those girls a lesson. In the legendary battle of sidekicks: would Gabby Hays stand a chance against Pat Brady? Pat was such a knucklehead, "carnsarnd it! "Poncho or Cisco? Beatles or Elvis? Catsup or Salsa?
Andy Clyde as California Carson (Hoppy's sidekick) or Pat Buttram (Gene Autry's sidekick) or Andy Devine as Jingles (Wild Bill's sidekick)

Message: Hey, John; Maaan!!!, not a mention of "The Creature fron the Black Lagoon". My Dad & Mom (RIP) had a house right on the Colorado river, just outside of Blyth, Ca.. After seeing that Creature movie at the Plaza, as a kid, it took me a long time before I went in the water again at the river. I also slept with one eye open at night waiting for the Creature to come sculking around. Jorge

Message: Marilyn's story of "the key in the door" reminded me of the story about "the hook." This story worked the circuit in the 60's. It was all about a couple of teens that parked in the woods to neck. The car radio reported that there was a one handed killer on the loose in the area and told everyone to be on guard. They said he had a hook for a hand. The girl got so scared that she asked her boyfriend to drive her home and when he got to her side of the car to open the door, there was "the hook" hanging on the door handle. Personally, I think smart parents thought it up to keep us kids out of the P.V. area at night. It worked for a while on me, but ohhh those parking session in P.V. were too much fun. I took my chances after that. My nephew use to hear this story when he wanted me to spook him out.. it still worked in the 90's.
OK how was the guy going to push the door button with a hook and if it was a pull down door handle, why didn't the door open when the driver took off or why didn't the hook guy scream bloody murder as he was being dragged from the scene? HEY, call me a cynic, but.........

Message: The Blob was really a bad movie almost funny it was so stupid. It is even weirder to know that Steve McQueen starred in it but he was really young then. There were so many scary movies back then that we can laugh at now, like The Thing and The Mummy. Back in 1960 my husband had to work nights for a week and I dreamed about the Mummy breaking into my apt. all night. I was really scared. When my husband came home in the morning he discovered I had left the keys hanging in the door knob all night. And Jock Mahoney was Sally Fields step dad.
How about Plan 9 From Outer Space. Now that was BAD.

Message: Corriganville was always one of my favorites. From Fort Apache to Robin Hood Lake I loved to wander the grounds. If anybody needs a little memory jogger of what it was like in its hay day one of my videos covers it in detail. Go to the video page and choose Corriganville Movie Ranch. I liked almost all of the fifties and sixties cowboys… film and TV. But my watch was a Davy Crockett.

Message: Hey, John Boy; Someone mentioned "Red Rider", Jaque Mahoney (sp) played the Red Rider part on TV. He was a Hollywood stunt man who was in the right place at the right time and got the part. He was also the father of "sister Batrill" & "Gidget", better known as Salley Field. Burt Reynolds made a movie, loosely based on Jaque Mahoney's life, when he was dating Salley Field, however, I can't remember the name of it. I don't know why I remember this trivia, I guess I have a good memory and/or to much time on my hands.Jorge
Jock Mahoney was the Range Rider.

Message: Hey George and JB ... Coragainville is still their as a park ... none of the buildingds are their. A fire came thru and took it all ... and they have pictures mounted on poles that shows what set or movie was filmed at that location (Like Fort Apache) ..Lots of Rin Tin Tin also ..I love walking my dog their...Roy Rodgers lived in the hills above Chatsworth. not far from Coragainville ... Many westerns were filmed in this area.... But JB ? Where or what was the "star c Ranch" ? ...... And Im surprised no one has mentioned Bonaza! ... High Chaperal ...Gunsmoke ... Come on" kiddies"!!! And hey! Those watches could be worth a few bucks!!!
The Calamigos ranch is still in the Malibu mountains. Back in the 50s it was the Calamigos Star C Ranch and was advertised on, I believe, the Doye O'Dell show. Another one was Melody Ranch in Placerita canyon. Also Disney filmed Spin and Marty (Mickey Mouse Club) in the same area.

Also, why did Hoppy, Roy, Gene or any of the rest of the cowboy hero's back in the day, never lose their cowboy hats when they got in a fight? Why did the bad guys always wear black cowboy hats and the good cowboy hero's always wear white cowboy hats? Jorge

Message: Well Cougars, it seems we have a thread to latch onto again so we can keep talking for a while. The Plaza it seems has often been a catalyst for starting up conversations. Any child living in Hawthorne in the late 40s through the 60s will remember the Plaza well. All of a sudden the Saturday matinee came to mind and the utter chaos of those times in that movie theater. My, but we were aggressive kids. I used to love the serials that they ran. Superman was one of my favorites. I saw so many movies at the Plaza that I eventually taught a course at the American College here in Athens on the history of the movies, but that was about thirty years ago. There hasn’t been a name mentioned, in terms of cowboys that I would have excluded. I loved them all. I think my second grade picture was taken with me wearing my Hoppy shirt. It didn’t show, but I was wearing my Hoppy boots, too. I loved them all, and what a wonderful and magic time to grow up. The Plaza is still a vivid memory for most of us who went to HHS. I can also remember that it was the place of some heavy breathing on my part. Just can’t remember what girl I was with?? Well, I can remember a few, but that would be indiscreet. As El Rojo would say, may the Cougar be with you!
The serials were one of my favorite things at the Plaza. I remember Zorro, Rocketman, Flash Gordon with Ming the Mercilious, etc and you had to come back the next week to see how they all got out of their perilousness (is that a word?).

Message: Corriganville is at the east end of Simi Valley. Reagan District Scouts hold their annual Cub Scout Day Camp there each summer. I have not been there, but I have been to Corrigan's Steak House in Thousand Oaks. Owned by Crash's son. They serve GREAT steaks at great prices. It was about $15 last time I was there. TONS of western movie memorabilia on the walls. If you are ever in the area stop in for lunch or dinner, you will not regret it. Thousand Oaks Blvd and Long St I think. The Roy Rogers museum used to be in Victorville. We must have passed by a hundred times before we stopped in on the way home from (Meadview? Vegas?) and found out that they were going to be closing and moving to Branson. Talk about a collection. Wow! Glad we saw it before it was gone. Lesson learned? Favorite cowboy will always be the Duke. Loved Big Jake; I always wanted a dog like Dog. You know, the kind that loves you so much he'll take a bullet for you? Kind of hard to find those. (well yeah, cuz they're all dead from bullet wounds. duh.)
