Message: Friends. What are they really, and do we ever stop say after graduation, to think back to our friends and what we did together, what they meant to us, and even where are they now. I know it is said you can't turn back time, and hindsight is 20-20, but after looking through some of the older post and seeing faces I haven't seen in over 30 years, one can't help but feel a bit nostalgic. I have noticed in the tribute sections that ones who I knew are gone from us forever. The teachers we now realize can not live forever, but while in school we expect then too. Never got the chance to tell Mr. Wing or Mr. Fix, thank you for their guidance. I myself suffered a heart attack back in 2000 and never gave my mortality much thought. But seeing my former classmates being gone, i.e Debi Darling, Richard Dickerson, Debbie Ash, Barry Catalano, and these are the ones I knew among a couple of more, one does long for the days of old. Life is way to short to spend it wondering what if. With what time we have left, and only God knows how long that is, maybe we should try to reconnect with at least some of our past. Thank you all for your indulgence as an old man rambles.

Message: I have a vague memory of driving Mrs. Roth (Shorthand) nearly insane my senior year. She got so angry at us (for what I cannot remember) that she handed out F's right before graduation. We all went straight to the Principal (Mr. Wetzler) and negotiations commenced. We graduated - she took a leave of absence. And do my classmates remember Mr. Baxter???

Message: Ah, the "legendary" Joyce Selz. It's nice to see that others within our esteemed order shares the dim view of her. She got me and another HHSer into a bad situation through her incompetence. If there were any malpractice insurance for vice principals or counselors, we'd have cleaned up bigtime!

Message: How about mean students? Not exactly mean I guess but one day I took a transistor radio (remember those?) to school. It didn't play radio stations but made a loud churping sound whenever you turned it on. I found it very useful in Mr. Bennett's drafting class. Every time I'd turn it on Mr.B would look up with a puzzled look on his face. I think he commented a couple of times that there was a bird in the room.
Not ANOTHER prank on Mr Bennett I remember the day someone threw some 22 bullets into the furnace in his metal shop. That got some attention.

Message: Mean Teachers: In 68-69 had an oriental male chemistry teacher that did not grade on the curve. As our class entered finals we knew there would be only 3 'possible' Bs, a hand full of Cs, and nearly two dozen Ds and Fs.The teacher always wrote the exams on the board, and pulled down the periodic table to cover it until the exams began. When he raised the table to start the final exam, someone had erased the exam and wrote, "Hey Mr. (can't remember his name), what did Pearl Harbor look like from the sky? Anyone remember his name?
Now there's a guy with a sense of humor

Message: Here it is again: February 22, the traditional Washington's Birthday. And this year it is the 51st anniversary of the darkest day in the history of the El Cheapo, aka the Plaza Theater. On this date in 1959, a member of the Class of '62 at HHS distinguished himself by throwing a knife through the screen. This event was duly reported in the Hawthorne Press. The article quoted the youthful malefactor as saying that he threw the knife "just to see if he could get away with it." His subsequent apprehension and arrest demonstrated to him that he couldn't.
There you go folks, "This Day In Plaza Theatre History". Thanks Steve for the report.

Message: Miss Selz sure did enjoy insulting students in my day, but I don't think that was part of her job description. It didn't happen to me, but a classmate was called into Selz' office and was criticized for her variety of (lovely!) hair colors ... this from a woman with 2" long black roots? I don't think the woman was a very happy person and she sure wouldn't last long in this day and age. The majority of HHS teachers were high caliber and definitely motivated me to do better. My favorites were Miss McGinty, Coach Means and Mr. Hamilton. Then, it was a Great Day to be a Cougar and I hope the traditions will continue forever
Me too Mary Ann, thanks.

Message: Okay folks, I got a email from Ronnie Coleman who is working with Dale Hahlbeck on this and I am helping where I can. Weare going to have a Multi-Class Reunion in Las Vegas. The dates are going to be June 10 to June 12 (thurs. thru sun.). The host hotel will be the Monte Carlo. Rooms for all three nights are $320. We will have quite a few things planned. I will probably put up a webpage for this. We may even print some t-shirts. I want to have some things to do including maybe a golf tournament, helicopter rides to Hoover Dam (which I went to yesterday and it is unreal now with the new bridge being built), deals on meals and other things. We have quite a few Cougars who live in Vegas and Vegas is always a great place to visit. You can email me for more details and as they develop I will let you know.
Hey Keith, Great idea man. Thanks for the information and do hope for a big turnout.

Message: Hey everyone. Good lord this is fantastic. I have looked around the site and have paid my dues. I guess as we get older we want to reconnect with our older friends. Don't know how many remember me or if you even want to. Don't recall how many folks I may have rubbed to wrong way. If you fall into any of those categories, I know it is late but I do apologize now. Guess it is true what they say, "with age comes wisdom". I now reside in Pennsylvania with my second wife of 10 years who is the light of my life. I am a late bloomer you might say, having finished my Associates Degree in Business Management in December 2009. Better late than never. I am an avid outdoors man, I and my wife, we hunt, fish, camp and love nature in general. Not a tree hugger by any means. We hunt to provide meat for our table, and truthfully, venison, wild pig, elk rabbit, pheasant, and other certain varmints are better for you than store bought chemical injected beef, chicken, and pork. And it doesn't cost an arm and a leg either. I have recently been deemed disabled after blowing out a knee back in 73 while in the Corps. So now I have more free time to pursue my love of outdoors. If anyone wishes to e-mail me, I would be more than happy to hear from you and will respond to all Richard Steward
Hey Richard, Thanks very much for letting all your old friends know where you are, welcome to Cougartown, and come on back anytime.

Message: Hello All. I just wanted to say THANK YOU Tom for Spicing up the feedbacks! You Rock! America is about free speech. Oh, And BTW my 10th grandchild should be born this time next week! Then the score will be Boys 5 Girls 5. I still am for Zero population growth. There are enough knuckle heads in the world. BUT of Course my Sons and Daughter are amazing so of course my grandkids are all incredibly SMART and will be Productive Citizens and probably invent something we really need besides a new hamburger. I'm Positive. God, being a grandma is so much is easier than being the mom!!! I hope I didn't P anyone off. It is easy to do here! ss
Hey Sharon, Naw, no one is p'd and you are totally correct about spicing up feedback and free speech right here as long as no one gets personal. Congrats on the new grand baby too but just because you want 10 or 15 grandkids is no reason for me to want that many. In fact I'll promise you right here that I will not have any more kids so you can have another grandkid
