Message: An interesting but upsetting article in LA Weekly titled
"Silencing Hawthrone High's Musicman - Mr Flaherty" Please read it with a grain of salt as LA Weekly used to be one of the truly great newspapers in California. Founded during the late 1960s, it quickly earned a reputation as both an independent as well as an informative, investigative paper that by the 1970s and 1980s had become a must-read for anyone who wanted to know anything about Southern California politics. They kept up this reputation into the 21st century. But it has been lost, particularly after a merger with the New Times corporation. Perhaps someone out there knows if it is as bad as the LA Weekly reports.

Message: Today Kathie and I took a trip to Disneyland. We went to our favorite place, Carnation Cafe, for breakfast. We decided to visit the refurbished "Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln". If you get a chance take a new look at Lincoln. The performance is nearly back to the original one seen in the '60s. The technology used for his face is amazing. Each word from his mouth is formed with great precision. After exiting the auditorium and before exiting the building take a look at the pictures on the walls. There looking at all the visitors is a picture of Hawthorne's own "Beach Boys".

Message: Happy holidays to all the Cougars out there. I just wanted to thank Tommie Whitener publically for helping me to contact "Miss Zalowski" my Russian teacher at HHS. I tried to send an e-mail to Tommie to thank him personally, but he seems to have changed his address. Tommie, please write to me so I can get your new address. Kitty wants to know how you found her - I do too. This site has helped me to get into contact with so many people out of my past and I am very grateful to you, Mr. John Baker, for all your effort in putting Cougartown together. Bless you and all HHS alumni during the holidays, all year, and every year! Jim Peppers

Message: My new favorite Christmas Movie is ELF. It has no worries and it just makes me laugh. I am truly grateful for all of the wonderful things in my life, Family, Friends, a Roof over my head and Work that I love. Like so many, my income has suffered this year but I am so glad that I can still do what I love and am surrounded by Family and Friends. I will continue to 'hang in there' with a little help from my friends. May we all get what we need this New Year even if it may not be all that we want! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Message: For those fellow Cougars Like me, 2 years ago I lived in a 1 million dollar house. Today my house is a 24 foot RV. and its older than it is long, Someday sooner than later this will work out, And I do so look forward to how things will be, But I am better off than thousands of people, Sleeping out in the cold, I cant imagine how that must be. I am truly Grateful for what I have. Tonight I will sleep in my own bed humble as it is, But so much more luxurious than many others are experiencing. Don't feel bad If you are having the "perfect" Christmas fellow Cougars, Enjoy it and thank God for it as I do. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son. A very Merry Christmas to all.

Message: Merry Christmas Fellow Cougars! I've not checked in for a while so I will catch up here on a variety of topics. We had the aluminum tree too. Each branch wrapped in a custom paper tube for packing. My dad made the multi-color spotlight engineered with his regular rigor. I imagine it would still work today if we still had it. As a boy scout, I worked at the Christmas Tree lot on the West side of Hawthorne Blvd between 134th & 135th for at least a few Christmas seasons. Troop 262. My dad had the great idea of flocking trees with lights on it already so we had to do the lights, flock and deliver the things. What a mess! I'm embarrased to admit that I've never seen "It's a Wonderful Life" or "Miracle on 34th St.". I have seen "A Christmas Story". I didn't put my eye out but I did shoot myself in the foot with my Sheridan pellet gun. We did have Christmas Carolers many times when we lived in Manhattan Beach. They usually had a cocktail in hand. Now, in New Hampshire, we ALWAYS have a white Christmas. It is not supposed to snow on Christmas day but it will on the 26th. We still have around a foot of snow on the ground from our last storm so it's still white. So I'm caught-up now and I'll try not to be such a stranger. The heck with "Happy Holidays", MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Message: Merry Christmas John and to all Cougars. I always find the holiday season somewhat bittersweet and melancholy. In 1968, at this time of year, my cousin and HHS student, Lynn Matteson, died from wounds suffered in Vietnam. Remembering that somber occasion each year makes me appreciate all the things I have to be thankful for and to show compassion towards those facing their own loss or life's low bridges. With my mom's death, two hospital stays related to my cancer surgery and radiation treatment, my son's own malignant brain tumor surgery, and other family challenges, it's been a rough year. Nevertheless, I get to see all my kids tomorrow at the same time and place and a new year is almost here with new hopes and opportunities. Joy and difficult life events aren't mutually exclusive. Best regards to all.

Message: My favorite Christmas memory: Dec. 1958, my Senior year at HHS. There was this girl that I liked very much, and I was trying to think of an excuse to spend some time with her. I had some Christmas presents to wrap and I thought maybe if I gave her a call and told her about the presents she would invite me over so she could help. I called her and it worked like a charm. I went over and we spent a nice evening, talking and wrapping the presents. The living room was dimly lit in order to highlight the Christmas tree. At the end of the evening we shared a wonderful, long, good-night kiss. I walked out the door into a rather foggy December evening, got into my '53 Merc and drove off, feeling on top of the world! Girl's name omitted to save her possible embarrassment.

I see that others do the same and hope that you NEVER tire of hearing how much YOU are appreciated and truly loved for the incredible gift that you have given so many. Because you too have experienced the magic of "the reconnect" you know it's value and I can't help but believe that many of these events would never have happened without CT. And a Cougar Sighting might NEVER have been born (no matter WHAT rules you wish to apply.) I love you John, and I wish you all the joy and wonder that only a Christmas morning with children can bring. Oh yeah, and that little something in your stocking. Tell Ella, Joyce, Kelly and family that the Biermans send Christmas love. XOXOXO

Message: We will be spending Christmas in Hawthorne with mom and dad and the rest of the family for a Christmas dinner and gift exchange followed by our traditional crunched up Christmas wrapping paper ball fight, since there are no snow balls to heave. We also will be sharing our newest DVD collection. We took dad's 26 reels of old 16mm home movies and had them transferred to DVDs. Three DVDs captured over 25 years of memories in Hawthorne and are now much easier to enjoy, although a little strange to watch in silence since there's no sound of the Bell and Howell projector in the background. I too would like to wish everyone a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!
