Message: In re to the traffic stops: My dad and mom live in Hawthorne and he gets caught up in them a couple of times a month. They are mostly on Crenshaw, at least the ones he gets caught in: police stop all cars, ask to see driver's license, registration, and insurance. If you have these, you drive on; if not, your car is towed away and you walk. He is amused by this, the time sink of waiting in line to bevetted nothwithstanding. Today we took a walk around the ex-mall, which we do a few times a week, and discussed the history of the water tower-- how the flag was painted up there in 1976, and we also wondered if the tower is still used for its original purpose, which was to keep the pressure in the city pipes up to snuff (because Hawthorne was mostly on flat land). Other cities had "towers" but they were hidden, probably still are.

Message: I guess it is time for the latest update regarding my brain tumor. I had a MRI on June 12 (1st one since the radiation treatments) and it showed several white spots. The report said it looked like possible radiation damage to the brain or tumor cells but the surgeon said he could not tell if it was more tumor or damaged cells without operating again. He also said there was no way he could remove all that was there due to it's location. So my other alternative is chemo which I really don't care to do at this point in my life. So, I will live the rest of my life with what I have and savor every moment and hope it does not grow any more. By the way, my hair has started to grow back. I reckon by sometime in August, I will get to see my barber. All for now and have a great COUGAR day.

Message: I had a chance to spend some time in Hawthorne today. Although my office is only 2 miles away it is seldom that I drive through the residential areas. So today I was on many of the streets that I traversed as a kid ? mostly west of Hawthorne Boulevard. It was nice to see a sense of community, green lawns, freshly painted houses, obvious pride of ownership. It?s a beautifully clear day and Hawthorne looked pretty good. Way too many cars parked on the streets but that?s the way most of Southern California is today. Hooray for Hawthorne!

Message: ... Drove thru Winslow AZ. on our way back from Santa Fe NM. And we stayed at the La Posada Hotel ( Very cool hotel ) So we had to check out the statue of "standing on a corner in Winslow AZ, The Eagles" .... And got me thinking ... Yes we have a nice memorial to the Beach Boys where their home was located .. But what about a statue in the Center of town or at HHS? I know, I know .... But hey plant a seed and see what grows from it .... Also want to say i won't be able to attend the 69 reunion. My son is a producer and is working on a documentary on the war (their is a war going on, its not all about Jackson) The director asked if I would want to be a "grunt" Head cook bottle washer driver etc, and no pay ! Such a deal ! I decided to be with my son and the crew ! It was a HARD choice. I was looking forward to seeing all of you .... Aloha and Mahalo ! .... Peace ....

On another note (a la Oscar Mayer) I thought I would add a comment - 2 weeks ago my sister Ricki and I were confronted by my daughter and her friends running into the house, excited about their Oscar Mayer wiener whistles!! It turns out that the weinermobile was across the street. Ricki and I ran out to get our whistles, but alas we were too late. The weinermobile was gone. Oscar Mayer is gone. Oscar Mayer, Michael Jackson...hmmm.

Message: Believe it or not, but the Oscar Mayer Wienie Mobile used to drive up and down the streets in Hawthorne back in the late 50's and early 60's. Little Oscar was the actual driver and used to blow his horn and wave as he went by. He also gave out those little wienie whistles if anybody remembers. I still have mine. Man, does that ever bring back memories.

Message: Hey, John Boy; Just back from the house in Palm Desert and checking the site. It's 35 degrees cooler hear at the beach then it is in Palm desert. Saw the post about Pahrump, John Boy, have you ever been to Pahrump ?. The post brought back memories, back 15 years ago or more, I used to run a 117 mile relay race from Baker, Ca. to Las Vegas with the Sheriff's dept.. This relay race started in Death Valley between LAPD & LASD when we had a training day with their D-Platoon (SWAT), a couple of the boys got over barley coked and started challenging each other to a race, stating that their department was better than the other. Truth be known there both #1. Anyway, the relay race got so big because other Police & Sheriff's depts. heard about it wanted to participate that we got kicked out of Death Valley and had to start running from Baker to Vegas as an alternate course. Now, back to Pahrump, what I remember about Pahrump when running the leg through Pahrump, was that there were two Casino's and a large parking lot with a bunch of trailers that were used by ladies of the evening to conduct business (for lack of better wording LOL). Those ladies that I guess were not busy doing what ever they did in the trailers would stand at the roadside and cheer us on as we passed through town towards Vegas. I never stopped in Pahrump, but I always said that someday I was going back when not running. So far though I have not been back and I'm sure that the place has changed, I think it's been at least 15/20 years since I last ran a 10K and passed through Pahrump, I know it's not HHS related but the mention of Pahrump brought back a memmory of the past. Oh yeah, this race is still today a yearly event with several hundred police agencies involved every April I believe. We used to end at the old Hacienda Hotel/Casino, I don't know where thet end the race now, but it's somewher in Vegas.

Message: Greetings from Pahrump! I haven?t had much time to check out CT lately because the Hippy and I are still living with one foot firmly planted in Nevada and the other rather firmly planted in California. We still have many assets there that require our attention. One of those being a house we recently sold in Garden Grove, CA. Now here?s a possible Cougar Town sighting of the second kind. While going through the Hippy?s 40 year collection of books and stuff that was hidden in the garage I came across a Sedlon Accordion Method Book 1-A. As I was about to put it in the trash,I noticed an address scrawled across the top and back of the music book. 11410 Menlo Avenue, Hawthorne, CA. Intrigued, I went through the book and discovered a "Certificate of Promotion" for one Sybil Childress, signed by Mrs. Renfro, June 1, 1966. The Hippy picked the book up somewhere between his life on the road in the Midwest and his Navy Days which means anywhere from East Coast to the West Coast. Ultimately, this sudden "treasure" came to rest in the garage in Garden Grove for the last 25 years. Does anyone know Sybil Childress? I think she might want this back. This month, we are in Pahrump (or Hell as the Hippy fondly refers to this beautiful warm high desert). We will return to CA in August to tend to our boats in San Pedro Marina. Yes John, the Hippy still has the 47 Chevy Fleetmaster, and the 64 Ford Pickup Truck, both are for sale. These days we spend a month in Pahrump, then hop in the RV and head back to San Pedro to tend to the boats, which are also for sale. In April, we were in San Pedro doing our thing. A girlfriend of mine came down and brought me back to her home in Oxnard so we could have some much needed "girl time". We took the coast route back to the Marina, as we passed LAX, I had a sudden desire to show my friend where I grew up. We took a little detour to my old house on 123rd Street in what is now the Del Aire/Wiseburn Area. As we drove down the street, I pointed out the house where my oldest friend, Kim Schwarz (HHS class of '74) resided. As we were slowly approaching that corner house where I spent some of the best days of my youth, a woman came walking out of the house and started to get into her car. It was Kim! We stopped the car and had a mini Reunion! Apparently, she is still living there. Which reminds me, I have to make that call I promised to make when we exchanged numbers. So that?s my story for this year. Please let me know via email if you know Sybil. Bless you all and I promise to continue to lurk and put in my two cents when I?ve got something to share.
