Message: So the "mini Cougar reunion" in San Diego came off without a hitch this past Saturday. Russ Painter and Mitch Boley and I sat around before the show trading HHS and Aviation LL memories. I didn't realize that Mitch transfered after his sophomore year. Because he missed the '77 reunion, we sent him to Dennis Kilroy's site
www.hhs77.com to check out all of his old HHS friends. Brian Bourguignon came later and the four of us and our wives rocked out to the show! During Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2, I took the mic to should the "if you don't eat your meat . . ." part and I ended it by pointing at these Cougs and shouting "You, yes you from Hawthorne, stand still laddie" Everyone got a big kick out of that.

Message: John, A quick note here..( ya, like I have a quick note in me!) This weekend, starting Saturday morning, there will be the annual Relay For Life of Hawthorne Date: April 04, at Hawthorne High School Halcap Field. (better known at the track). So if you've ever had a yearning to walk that track a couple of times for old time sake, this is the perfect reason to do so. The proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. The idea is to keep a warm body walking the track for 2 days and nights straight. The event will be hosted by several sponsors: The Hawthorne VFW, The Police Dept, The HHS Clubs, Cancer Survivors and their families and more. Jan and I will be making our donations and dedicating our walk to the Hawthorne VFW, located directly as you walk in from Broadway entrance.. but the choice is yours. You can find out more and print your application at home to save time by logging on to:
www.Relayforlife.org/hawthorneca. Just print it, complete it and bring it with you to HHS. There'll be tents pitched, music, food sold, and your donations are accepted towards the Fight Against Cancer. My new favorite car magnet is the pink criss-cross ribbon that says, "SAVE THE TA TA'S". You didn't think I'd write in CT without being a little off color, did you??

The things that I most remember about that car were the center post in the windshield (and I had to sit in the middle of the front seat) and that the doors opened by pressing a button on the door rather than having a handle.

Message: Speaking of Studebakers, here is a little history lesson. The Studebaker Bros had a business on the east coast back in the 1800's. One of the brothers came out to California around 1850 during the gold rush. He saw a need of the miners for a way to haul the gold out of the mines. So, Mr. Studebaker opened a shop in Placerville, CA, about 50 miles east of Sacramento, and started to produce wheelbarrels. And the rest as they say is history. Take care and have a fine COUGAR day.

Message: My quick disappearance had a lot to do with (1) THE WORST Friday, the 13th, I can remember (was still recuperating); (2) It suddenly turned pretty doggone cold at Cruise Night and I was freezing (different cold in So. California!); and (3) travel fatigue! I did manage to snap a few pictures and Paco will have those up in a few days. It was good to see everyone and missed seeing a lot of people I had hoped to see. Incidentally, I heard that the Hoods' (Robin, Chris and Tim) Mother passed away on March 10th. My heartfelt empathy goes out to all the Hoods because the loss of one's Mother is the worst.

Message: I was in Hawthorne about a week ago and when I drove past where the Cockatoo was "that was shut down about 5 years ago" I noticed that they are once again rebuilding it. This time it looks more like all the apartment buildings that have been going up in Hawthorne. By the way, has anyone gone back to where you lived in Hawthorne. My mom still lives in the house she bought when I was in the 8th grade. However, I also drove past the place where we lived when I was in 4th - 7th grade and it has been torn down and now there is a big apartment building.

Message: Hey everyone: The picture of the early Cockatoo Inn brought back a memory. I woke up on a foggy morning in 1958 wondering what all the sirens had been for during the night. Somehow my mom knew what the story was. (Probably because of the L.A. Times) I was told the Cockatoo Inn burned down last night! Wow, this was news I thought and after breakfast I got on the bicycle and rode (in thick fog) over to the site; North on Acacia to Imperial and I couldn't see the building because of the fog, (Acacia would be the street at the rear of the picture) across the parking lot and up along the side where the 'electrical box' protrudes on the West side. I could hear two men talking as I rode up and through the mist I discovered Andy Lococo and (I think) his brother standing there looking over the electric box. (Many people thought the Lococo's torched it for the insurance money). Well, as soon as they saw me the talking stopped and I didn't stick around; I turned the bike around and headed back into the fog and home. Most would agree that the newer, bigger Inn built there in the late 50's was a much better looking edifice than the one it replaced (through honest, hard work or not).

Message: I had a Cougar reading this morning. In the OC register, there was an article on Mr. Macha, a former teacher who taught at HHS. He discovered his "Holy Grail" of airplanes. He and a few others finally found an old WW2 plane that crashed in the Santa Ana Mountains. Those of you intrested in reading about it, go to www.ocregister.com
