Message: While Coach Chauncey is still able to read this, I thought I?d pay some well deserved tribute to this man. During a few of his son?s David?s birthday parties and during a few rides to Hawthorne High School in Chauncey?s van, I came to know Chauncey as a strong man, inside and out, who wanted the young of the day to grow strong inside and out as well. He fought against the illegal use of drugs inside and outside the classroom. He hated pretence and he hated the idea of being soft about what was wrong. He could be gruff, but he was always likeable and fun. He was always approachable and one man we youngsters could go to for even the biggest of problems. I knew that, but fortunately, never had to seek him out for help, but it was a comfort knowing that that strong man was there, just in case. Heck, it?s a comfort just knowing his daughter and my family live on the same block. The Chauncey legacy for Hawthorne goes on in many ways!

Message: Talks about the weight room made me wondered what happened to the ol' Wrestling room. Where do they work out now? I can't imagine where...with what room HHS has nowadays. BTW...always hear about cars of this and that but I NEVER ...never heard anyone speak of the Pontiac LeMans. I had one that was once my Dad's..then Stepmother..then sister...and finally then me. I owned it for a few years before giving it up. I sure wished I still had it. It was a FAST car. (oppps...did I say fast..nah..I retrack that..ya...) Ok ok...cat outta of da bag. I won my few shares of RED LIGHT "Pick up races" (never lost) so I guess my car had a good engine. Were there any pick up racings going on in the 60's?

Message: Jim Nemish...I'm blown away that another 60'er wrote in. Your prose as to right and wrong, were on the numbers. Just like a malt on the windshield while crusin on the the blvd from Frosties to the Stand. Jeez we didn't have windshield washers back then did we? LOL!!! Your old Plymouth, or De Soto, or Dodge was as fast as my brothers old 51 fastback Chevy. He used to race cement trucks. Lost several times. It was also great to see you last year at the golf tourney and the reunions before. If not for John Baker and people like Rich Sloan and the rest of the ones that care about our fun years, what would we have? SSDD? It's more fun than that. Good to see your post. Hope you're well. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU! Jake N Jude ( 47 in June )!

Message: Hello, Hawthorne. Some of the best times of all. Still friends with a lot of the guys. Hard to believe it was 45 bla-bla years ago. Hello to all who like to remember the good times. I wrote in a book that good times are memories and bad times were learning experiences. Thanks for the memories.

Message: Thanks Clark and John. Was just wondering. I have been putting together my order for my gym and some of the companies have been showing me some of their installations and I can't believe some of the high school weight rooms out there. Unreal. 20,000+ sq. ft. at a high school for a gym. One school had 10 squat stations. I would love to see a pic of the HHS weight room if anyone gets a chance. Also, does anyone here live by the Torrance Library main branch. I have a favor

Message: Hey Mike Shay - Mr. T was one of my favorite teachers! I was a TA for him in senior year I think. The correct pronounciation is Tis-kev-ich - hard to believe when you look at all those consonants, huh? I actually saw him in the last few years at some event or other - Cruise Night or Prom I think? He was one of the really good guys but I have to tell you, he may have been pulling your leg about the "accent" since he never spoke with one when I was in school! And he's absolutely right about George Key - that man is loved by students and teachers alike. Time to chime in again Jorge Llave! And Patty V, where are you? John, I'm sending you some dues today so you can test your Paypal - XOXO

Message: Hey Johnny Boy, I think I just had my first legitimite Cougar sighting. Our old buddy Ron Kessler and I played at Los Amigos in Downey yesterday and they put another two-some out with us. These guys were very nice and even though a little bit older than Ron and I, they both shot lower scores than we did. By the time we got to the third hole we were asking each other where they grew up and how come they both talked a little bit weird. Turns out they were born in Poland and migrated to California. I mentioned going to HHS and one of them said he was a coach at Hawthorne High for 32 years. Even though he started 7 years after I left we both knew a lot of the same people. His name is Charles Tyszkiewicz (yes, the spelling is correct) The other one was his brother Andrew. Charles said he coached football, basketball, and tennis and that most of the kids just called him Mr.T and I can see why. We both enjoyed our time talking about people like Coaches Chauncey, Plum, Capelouto, Sevier and Jones and he swears that Mr. George Keys is the finest principal he ever worked with. He promises that he will tune into Cougartown and say hello. By the way, one of his favorite characters was Danny Fix. He says Danny was always in trouble but fun to hang out with. I think we were very very lucky to have spent a little time with these gentlemen and we hope to see them again. Does that count?? M.S.

Message: The Pictures that Eric Larson sent were very Beautiful, and it does show how much beauty there is in California, and that was just a little part going North/East of Calif. We have the different Beachs from North to South and our small mountain towns that have the change of seasons, so much more. Forget the problems of the world for a moment, I enjoyed your pictures, it did bring to my attention to enjoy where we live, enjoy life. ALWAYS A COUG

Message: Keith: The HHS weight room now includes what used to be the wrestling rooms back in our day. All the rooms on the east side of the gym are the "weight room". The olympic machine is no longer in fashion. Nowadays it's free weights and Olympic lifting. I remember lifting every summer in the 70s in coach Plum's summer school program. On the days he was in a good mood he'd take us over to the pools for a quick dip after our workout if we were lucky.

Message: Sorry to here about Louie. And too bad I can't just go to breakfast with everyone, Don. I already used up all my vacation this year. But on the bright side, I just put in an offer on Debbie's dream home in North Bend, 3 private acres and 2000sq. That's about 15 miles east of Seattle. Deer, Elk and bears once in a while. Even an occasional Cougar. Plenty of room to park anyone's RV if they have plans to see the NW. Will keep you informed, and thanks again John, for the web site.

Message: I'm saddened to report the passage of my battery mate from the HHS baseball team, LARRY SKEEN. On friday April 18th, Larry's liver and kidneys took a nose dive for the last time and he went on to meet the Big Cougar in the Sky. (Be looking in the tribute section in the not too distant future). Rest in piece "Wally."
