Message: Went to Phoenix, AZ last week for the wedding of Jackie Vaughn.. Daughter of Jack Nelson Vaughn and Mary Plater Vaughn. Both from Hawthorne High. ( they've been married for 34 years now and still know how to party down ) Got a chance to see old friends from Hawthorne there and took pictures galore of Jack dancing up a storm to YMCA. ( His favorite number.) Lots of fun - lots of booze - lots of memories. It's hard to believe that you have to go to Arizona to see people from Hawthorne. Seemed like 35 years just melted away. (I wish ! ) Thanks Mary and Jack..for the great time. Looking forward to the next visit.

Message: Sharon, I know of the restaurant and have eaten there a few times. Is it the one next to Zippy's as you go down the Pali Hwy. you make a left and it is on the right. Good food but the little hole in the wall place in Waimanalo just down from the Polo field is the best. I was just there and that place isn't there anymore though. It was called Bueno Nalo. I'm supposed to be leaving for Hawaii again on Monday but had to cancel because I'm to busy. I guess that's good. But I plan on spending most of August there before I start traveling alot with Gold's Gym in September. Hey a reunion would be great in Hawaii for HHS.

Note: Hi Doug, Long time...... Thanks for letting me know. I will stop by HPD when I'm in the old stomping grounds next week and chew the fat for a bit.

Remember that banner that we marched all over Southern Calif. and trying to learn to twirl those tall flags?? I ran into Ricki Docktor at our 20th reunion and I have heard John Biller is a band director at a high school in Bakersfield. Those sure were fun times!

Note: Hi Grace, Thanks for checking in. It's amazing how close we all were then geographically, and are just now meeting each other. I love it. Well better now than never.

While we all are praying, please throw a few words in for my fellow Arizona Police Officers who have been gunned down in the streets of Phoenix. Over the past month, 5 Officers have been shot, and 3 others killed in ambush style attacks. What is happening in this world of ours?

Message: Hey, that Hawaii reunion idea sounds good to me - I love it there. My youngest son is in the Coast Guard stationed on the USCGC Jarvis at Sand Island right across from the Aloha Tower. I'm sure Keith Jones knows where that is. Everytime Keith talks about Hawaii, I wish I were there instead of in Wisconsin where the current temperature is about 35 degrees! Hey how bizarre, the temperature here is almost freezing and the weather guy on the Fox station just gave tips for avoiding heat stroke. Keith, did you ever eat at the Mexican restaurant in Kailua Town? It's one of my favorites.

Message: For those of you talking about living at or around 118th Street and Birch, I also lived there, for about 6 months in 1960/1961. I remember people talking about the small people.
I lived at the second house from the corner of Birch on 118th on the south side. Any of you remember the small fire at that house in 1960. I hope not since it was my brother and I who set it by playing with the wall heater and set a bed ablaze. This made for good copy in the Hawthorne Tribune as our dad was on Hawthorne's Fire department. He actually responded to his own house. I remember his face vividly when rolled up on the back of that fire truck. God, were we in trouble and was he embarrassed. He almost quit the department. It was shortly after that when we moved to Lennox.
Also, anybody remember the air raid siren that went off EVERY Saturday morning at 10:00. It was at the Sheriff's station on Lennox Blvd.

Note: Great story Bob, Since the Gross family lived 2 doors east of Birch on the south side, I guess you lived west of Birch. The air raid sirens, YES!!!!!...... there's a great memory flogger. As I remember them, they were positioned up and down Hawthorne Bl, and went off on the last Friday of the month at 10am. I think there was one by Chips restaurant. If the Russki's had dropped "The Big One", I don't think it would have shut the sound of those mighty sirens down. Thanks Bob

Message: Do you know of any other Web sites for HHS? It was fun scanning through your Web site - most of the teachers you list were still around in the 1970's. Sorry to see that HHS looks like a prison from the outside now.
Note: Hi Tim, Glad you found the site. I don't know of any other HHS websites. Individual classmates have sites and they would be listed at the bottom of the What's New Page.
I know HHS looks prison like, but it's more to keep the riff raff from coming onto campus. Course it sure does keep you from jumpin' in the old jalopy and headin' on down to Fosters for lunch too.

Message: John...As a young boy and through college I remember "Hazel" who went to our church on 147th and Larch in Lawndale. She was a little person who often visited my granparents frequently. In 1989 she came to visit Gma Hood, who was then in her late 90s and told us about this great 50th anniversary reunion in Kansas for the Wizard of OZ that she had attended. She was also a Munchkin but in all those years I never knew it till that day...DUH! I only knew her as Hazel the sweet little lady at church. Ill bet she knew the people you are talking about or was she one of them..?? Amazing...PS..As much as I like the tune, I have a heck of a time typing while listening to "Huey piano Smith". Got any Johnny Mathis I can listen to?...later cougs :o)
Note: Hey Robin, I'd bet she was one of them. It is a small world huh. Uh.....pardon the pun, that was low.....I mean.....I shoulda stopped short on tha......Sorry.
Re: Huey.... If you don't like him, there're other "timeless classics" plastered all over the site. I wondered if anyone was going to notice. BTW, for you that can't receive this music, please go to the Real Audio site and download a FREE audio player. Then come back and relish in the planted Oldies. El Rojo, you listenin'??

Message: The "midgets" that you are talking about, lived in the apartment building directly behind my grandmothers house. We were on the west side of Birch, between 118th & 119th and the apartment building was on the west side of Acacia. These "little people" starred in The Wizard of Oz as munchkins and also on some shows with Billy Barty. My dad knew them and I had the opprortunity to visit them at their apartment on many occassions. They were really nice people, and now I will work on trying to remember their names. By the way... the had a son, and he was a normal size.... pretty amazing!
Note: Hi Susan.. Susan's Grandmother, Mrs. Ciampa, and my Grandmother Mrs. Spoonemore lived right next door to each other on Birch, about 3 or 4 doors south of 118th St. and YES!! I remember now....... That's the place. It was over by St Josephs on Acacia. I remember seeing these people when I was very young at the little corner store on the southeast corner of Hawthorne and 118th St. They were the first small people I ever saw in my life. Thanks Susan
Now the next question... These same people that remembered the "midget people" swear they saw a "Pink Elephant" in the alley behind their house on about 116th and Truro.....I am not making this up.......Anyone????

Hi Miss Cindy Laird. Should be in Hawaii tommorrow but I decided that I needed to stay home and finished some unfinished business. I will probably get there in June or July. I just found out that my Jeep over there was towed (for not moving in a while I guess) and it cost me almost $400 to get it out of the yard. Hawaii is still costing me and I'm not even there. Now I have it at my friend's business near the airport. Anyway if you go to the New Products show at the Blaisdell look up the booth with a product called Handi-Rack. It's my friends product. Say Hi his name is Bradley from Australia. Hi everyone. Anyone here from Linda Jacobs from our class.

She's missing a lot of fun by not being in on the Cougartown feedback! John B. thanks again for all your hard work maintaining this website. Can't wait to see the reunion pix. How about having the next one in HAWAII??? It sure would be nice and you wouldn't HAVE to wear a bathing suit if you don't want to. You can wear a big aloha shirt to cover everything up! BTW I'm not related to Sonya Laird as far as I know. But I don't know that much about that side of my family so it would be interesting to find out. My dad is Bill Laird who graduated from Inglewood High in '52...Was Holly's the restaurant they used to film Pulp Fiction?
Note: You are welcome Cyndi for this website and enjoy the heck out of it. I don't think I'll need that overgrown "Hula Shirt".
My friend, Chris Prewitt HHS67 has unselfishly given me a body transplant, so I'll be wearing my blue speedos to the next beach party after all. Now all I need is a face transplant and I'll be back in business. :o) Hey Chris, work on it will ya'.

And yes, Hollys was used in Pulp Fiction. The first scenes and the last.

Message: To all my fellow Cougars past, present, and future...
Like many of you I am reeling from the news coming out of Colorado these past few days. As a parent these images frighten me, for they strike at the basic belief that our children are safe while at school. As a human being these images sicken me, for they drive home the many changes in our society and their results.
During my time at HHS we witnessed the deaths of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy. And though these acts of violence occurred away from us, we felt a sense of attachment to those events. We also felt a sense of loss. Perhaps it was pieces of our innocence that we were losing at the time.
I cannot for a moment imagine what the students and faculty at Columbine High School are feeling at this time. If I were a parent of one of the victims, how could I make sense of such an act? If I were a parent of one of the surviving students, how could I look my child in the eye and say to them "it'll be okay"?
As a parent my greatest responsibilities are to protect and to teach my child. These past few days I have been painfully aware of my fallibility in both of these areas.
May I suggest to all of us who frequent this wonderful web-site, as we cast a nostalgic glance back into years and memories past, that we take some time to reflect upon what made our time at HHS so special. And, that we communicate that to our children, no matter what their ages. Let us not only educate our children's minds, but their hearts as well. Let it begin with us, so that we can understand and heal. Let it begin with us, so that we will reach a time when there are no longer such acts of violence involving our children....

Note: Bob, Well said.

Message: Hi Bob Veach: After reading your mail tonight I called Mr. Nelson to tell him you had forgiven him. He was very pleased so give yourself a gold star for doing a good deed today. It is not an easy job to be the V.P. in charge of discipline and he knew lots of kids resented him but he always did what he thought was best for the school and we did have a fine and orderly place to spend our days. Actually he is a big pussey cat at heart and he loved HHS and you kids more than you could ever know. So thanks for making this day a happy one for him.
Note: Hi Jorge, Good to hear from you. You missed a good one in LV, but we're already making plans for another one. These old Cougs can party like it's 1999. I'll see you at the Car Show on the 1st of May. For those of you who do not go to any other page on this site, there will be a Car and Motorcycle Show at HHS on May 1. Click here for more details. Here's a question I have always wanted to ask a former teacher.... How many students do you actually remember?? You have seen so many come and go.... What makes one stand out over another?
I have had sooo many wonderful teachers in my life and I often wonder if they remember some of the funny or special moments I think about.
I have great memories of Dana Intermediate (became Intermediate the year I entered as a 7th grader. I never had to be low man on that totem pole!) and of your class and of your wit. You said that you remembered me... but.. come on... you can tell me the truth... did ya really??
So glad to have this site and to be able to even ask you this!! (THANKS AGAIN JOHN!!)
Ok You people from mid 80's.... where are ya?!?
Delia

Note: Delia Darlin', Folks, this is one class Cougar. I won't tell you how far back she goes on this site, but she left the 8th feedback message ever sent. She's also responsible for all you class of 86ers 10 year reunion site. I can tell this, this woman had and has pride in her school and her community. I just had to say that Delia. You haven't been around in a while and I'm real glad to hear from you. You and people like you make me proud to be from Hawthorne.
