Message: Just a heads up. Our Tributes page was getting very long and has been revamped to reflect the individual classes. Also a Teachers-Staff section has been added. Should make for easier browsing. If you have a deceased list from your class or know of someone who should be added, please email me. Thanks all.

Message: Just wanted to say what a nice event the breakfast was yesterday to thank us for contributing to the sports program. It is always inspiring to hear the positive things the kids have to say about HHS and to hear from the Principal, the good things that are going on there.

Superintendant and fellow alumnus - Sandra Suarez, VP of the School Board (Leuzinger 1973) - our Alumni, Principal Mark Newell, and a special thanks to our HHS football players who showed up.

Message: Did anyone else go to the homecoming game last night? I didn't spot anyone who looked like alumni material. Yes, apparently the football team is as poor as we all feared. Inglewood was beating us 27-0 at halftime when I gave up and headed home. Some of the teachers and administrators at the game told me it's tough to get kids to come out for the team and stay out. I had a nice talk with the homecoming court as a group of young ladies in evening dresses sort of stand out at a football game. They were polite and well spoken and represented our school well! The stands were only about one third full and some students told me that football games are not the first choice for something to do on friday night. All of you band alumni might want to help out the band as their uniforms are the shabbiest I have ever seen. It was good to be at ol Halcap though and I cruised through my old neighborhood and past York school on my way out. Lots of pleasant memories and flashbacks to names and faces I haven't thought of in years! Hawthorne was a great place to grow up!

Message: Very sad news to report that Bill Halford (HHS '66) passed away last week. I don't have many details as I heard about this second hand from my brother Steve Long (St. Joe's 59 /St. Bernard's 63). Bill had been very ill and on pain meds. for some time. Steve was glad to have seen him this summer. He visited again last week a day or so before he died, but Bill was only semi-conscious as he was on a respirator and on a high dose of morphine. After graduating, I dated Bill briefly in 1968. Bill 'turned me on' to TM (transcendental meditation), which he'd found helpful. Didn't do much for me, but it was fun to chant, look into his beautiful blue eyes and ponder life with Bill. Steve said memorial services are planned soon. Bill's sister Sharon should have details, or feel free to contact my brother at steve-long@att.net If there's a heaven, I'm sure Bill is body surfing, dancing and having fun up there - with lots of laughter and with no pain or limitations.
Sad news Linda, but thanks for reporting it.

Message: Hey Larry, You bet I remember garage bands. I think I was in at least 10 different ones with you and various other HHS'ers. Seemed whenever we heard of some Cougar getting a guitar or keyboard, we had try outs. By far, the best though, was the "Civilized Movement." Lasted the longest too. And yes, we played at the Memorial Center often!!!!

It is nice to see Ellis check in every now and and then, he was a funny and really good guy. Remember back then when the family actually ate meals together in the dining room or kitchen?

Message: Jim Sloey, your explanation of your "turtle dilemma" brings back a memory of when my BRIDE, Judi and I were first going together. Circa 1959. I was invited over for dinner. Well it was spaghetti. I was always taught to eat everything on my plate back then as most of us were. So I was scraping my plate to eat all the food when, my mother in law to be, said, "Russell if you scrape your fork over that plate one more time I'll break it over your head". I took her bluff. Jude and I are still together, no matter what her Mom felt, rest her soul. 48 yrs this coming June 17th. And to all you guys who were in the wedding party that said "you'll be divorced in two years", or why in the heck are you getting married? MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU! Jake N Jude. It didn't happen.!
Hey Russ, I predict you and Judi will make it

Message: ok John , you got me on a roll here....I hated brussell sprouts too. I remember my son Neil didn't want to eat them. I told him if I ate them he would have too...he agreed. So I put one in my mouth and never got to bite into it....It came out just that fast! No brussell sprouts for Neil!! I remember our dog, Fury, a german shepherd, who loved to sit by my side at the dinner table. He would anxiously await all my rejects. No one ever caught on. I would also keep a good size napkin on my lap. Every time I put a bite of yechy food in my mouth I would pretend to wipe my mouth and get rid of the food real quick. At some point, after all the veggies were gone....I asked to be excused to use the restroom...where I would flush my veggies down the toilet. No one ever said anything so I am sure no one caught on. I shared that story many years later..like when I was in my 40s with my dad. He laughed. Believe me, if he had known when I was younger, he would have had me eaten twice as much!
The napkin thing...I should have called you

Message: Good Morning! I am up early today....thought I would check into Ctown and see whats up....Just voted for Zach the lapdog. He sure is a big ball of cute. Also had to comment on the eating all your food story....It made me think of my dad. When we were at the dinner table there were two firm rules. You had to ask to be excused before you left the table. The 2nd one was eat all your food on your plate. We couldn't leave til we ate it all. I remember nights where I sat in the dark picking at asparagus and a few other things that didn't go well with me. As for restaurants my dad reminded me a few times how I would eat all my veggies, turn the plate and eat the mashed potatoes, then save the best for last...the meat. He asked me why I did that....Well I ate the veggies first cause they were my least favorite...then the potatoes...and then my reward...the best part of the meal, the meat. Now as an adult I love my veggies!!! My mom was far more lenient than my dad. She would let us eat what we wanted. She was also from Nebraska, just like the Sloeys.
Brussel sprouts......I remember sitting down to dinner on Monday night and not getting up until Thursday. I just couldn't make those things go down. It was like swallowing a golf ball. The dog, normally a begger, wouldn't touch them either. Even today, when I just look at Brussel sprouts it triggers a gag reflex. Vote for Zach, Cougs

Message: The reference to Sniffy Soup by John, triggered at old memory for me. On my 21st birthday my folks took us to a French restaurant hoping that some sophistication might trickle down to the Sloey boys. {Remember we were born in Nebraska.] The waiter came to take our order, gave us the specials stating that the main entrée came with soup AND salad. The soup was a choice of Pea Soup or Turtle soup the latter the waiter highly recommended. Giving us a few minutes to decide, we bantered about what the turtle soup would taste like; both my parents agreeing on the turtle soup. ?Try it son, you?ll never know until you do.? Jack was persuasive but I was unsure. When the moment of decision came, a glance from my dad that said volumes about risks, courage and chances, made the choice easy. ?I?ll have the turtle soup,? I said sipping on my Roy Rogers. The orders were sealed as the waiter made his retreat to the kitchen. Fear, anxiety, perhaps even motion sickness set upon me at once. The waiter was 2 steps away from entering the kitchen door to retrieve my turtle soup. Jack would surely make me eat every last drop regardless of my birthday or how badly it may taste. ?Excuse me, waiter,? I said loud enough for everyone in the restaurant to hear, but I was desperate. ?Excuse me.?The second one got his attention from a distance that seemed like a football field that separated us. He stopped and stared at me as I sealed my fate ?Hold the turtle! Make it Pea. ?For my 22nd birthday we did burgers on the grill.
Hey Jimbo, That's kinda what my momma used to say to me, "You aren't getting up until you eat every bean and pea on your plate".

Message: I saw someone mentioned a garage band. I remember Chris Montez used to play with a band in his garage all the time. We used to go down and sit in his driveway and listen. We also had one around the block on 137pl that played. They sounded so good both of them.
