Message: I don't remember my first concert but one of the better ones was The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and Jimmy Buffet. I think I paid about $15.00. Heck, you can't even get parking for that price.

Message: Reading about concerts brought back memories of my first concert. At the time (around 58-59?) I worked at Green Farms BBQ, the best BBQ in Hawthorne. The owner had a daughter some 2--3 yrs. younger than me who wanted to go to the Dick Clark Rock and Roll Show at the Hollywood Bowl. Sid, my boss, asked me to go along with them, at the time younger girls were not allowed to go alone to an event like that. I don't really remember who I saw but they were American Bandstand regulars like Frankie Avalon, Dion, Paul Anka, etc. Any recollections out there? How about you , John Rout. Remember Dick Clark's first rock and roll show? My memory is fast fading. Also, a big happy birthday to Momo and many more, we love you!

Message: My first concert was in 1944 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We drove from Enid,OK. -- this was when gasoline was rationed -- so I could see my idol, Gene Autry. He was a Sergeant in the Army Air Corps at the time, and was on a 'War Bond Drive'. I was 'crushed' because he didn't have Champion with him and was in uniform instead of his cowboy outfit!!! It was quite traumatic for a three-year-old!!
I think you've got the record for oldest Concert, Tom

Message: I may have been in 3rd grade, when we had a project on Textiles. I went into my Mother's closet and cut a large square of fabric out of the bottom of everyone of her dresses and coats. She worked in an office at the time and dressed very nice. My Mom still tells this story ..I have to admit she had some nice textures..Also, first concert was The Beatles in San Diego '65 and Beach Boys at 1969 HHS Prom..Then Stevie Wonder at the Forum.
Thanks Gail....

Message: John Boy; if this topic has already been done, don't post this. Just thought of another silly topic (trying to get you to that 1000th page before Christmas John). Topic: try and think of the dumbest thing you did or something you invented while growing up as a kid in Hawthorne and/or both. Heres my confession (story), I went to Ramona grade school which I think was on 135th or 136st and Ramona in Hawthorne. This took place when I was in 5th or 6th grade, 1955 or 1956. We used to have science projects and science fares in grade school and you would get ribbons if you won with your entry. Well I had read a Popular Mechanics book and thought I knew about electronics. I took an electric cord that I cut off from one of my dad's shop tools (that's another story) and two 10 penny nails. I drove the 2 nails through a piece of wood about 4 inches apart and bent the pointed end of the nail about 3/4 inch. I then connected the positive and negative wire leads to one each of the nail heads and then put tape over the connections pretty good so far HUH? didn't know about ground wire. Then I took a hot dog and stuck it on the bent ends of the nails and you could cook a hot dog in about 2 seconds still sounds good so far HUH. Well During an assembly in the cafeteria at Ramona school, I was showing my invention to one of my school mates and he said plug it in and lets see if it glows in the dark. Well we unscrewed one of the floor receptacles and plugged it in and it shorted out the entire assembly hall (cafereria) making a loud bang and flash fire because the wood caught on fire. Fortunately no one got hurt, just really scared. I was taken to the principals office for a paddeling, yeah they did that back then. When I got to the principals office, she asked me how did I do such a thing and after I explained that I had read Popular Mechanics. She was so suprised and proud that I had read a book and learned something that I did not get a Spank that day. However, she made me promise not to invent anything that had to do with electricity until I grew up. Also, I did not get to enter my invention in the science fair.
Great one George. I always thought those "nail cooked" hotdogs tasted a little tinny Also, no need to press the 1000th page. It will be here way before Christmas.

The sound quality wasn't the best but the rest made up for it....THREE DAYS MAN!!!!! Happy Thanksgiving every one...Steve, great to see your posts and to know that you are getting better...

Message: This wasn't my first but it may have been the best. 1970 Bobby Valdez asked me to go with him to Harbor JC to help his brother set up some chairs for a Boys Scout benefit concert. After 3 days of whining, I said ok and we went. I asked how long and what were the groups that were playing. He said shut up [he said that a lot to me] what do you care it's free for us. Well we spent about 45 minutes putting up about 50 chairs [we weren't the fast guys in the group but we didn't have to take our moms either]. The new groups performing for free that night to benefit the Boy Scouts were...Earth, Wind and Fire preceded by Cheech and Chong. Six months later they were all famous. We got to talk to all of them after the performances. Way cool.

Message: Someone mentioned the Cinnamon Cinder, Long Beach. Between 1963 and June 1964 when I went into the service, we used to haunt the CC-Long Beach, CC-Alhambra, Rendezvous Ballroom, Harmony Park to see The Ojays, The Kingsmen, Ike & Tina Turner, Leslie Gore, The Righteous Brothers, 12 year old Little Stevie Wonder, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Dick Dale & The Deltones, The Astronauts, and a ton of others. Also, the Bel Air Club in Redondo Beach to hear The Bel Airs play Mr. Moto. Also, like you, The Four Preps at the boys gym. The first real concert was in 1968 after I got out of the service, at the Long Beach Auditorium to see Creedance Clearwater, The Grass Roots and another group whose name has slipped into my Old Timers room. Anyone else have memories of the above clubs?

Message: Oh wait...I forgot...when I was 10 ('71ish) my mom and a friend took me to see Elvis at the Fabulous Forum...we were 4 rows from the stage and women were screaming and throwing various undergarments on stage. I didn't really get why they were going nuts but remember that it was fun to stand on seats and scream without getting in trouble.
I think I was there too, Laura....

I think he graduated in '74 or '75, but don't remember if he went to HHS. My Mom made me take my younger brother, Merrill, with us because I was 15 and not allowed to date without a chaperone until I turned 16.
My Mom still has to go along on my dates....

Message: Jean, On February 14, 1963 the Boys played the Valentines dance at HHS that I did attend. I didn?t go but two days later they played a KFWB charity concert at the Sports Arena. Maybe that is the one you attended. Others listed as attending were Bobby Vinton, Ann Margret, and Chris Montez. Does that sound like it might be your first concert?
