Message: Bruce Gray class of 71 just sent me a reminder on how to cook a turkey some easy step?s to follow pre-heat the oven to 350, Stuff the big bird with pop corn. Put the bird in the oven, you?ll will know when the turkey is done when you see the ass-end of the big guy blown out and popcorn everywhere ?Happy Thanksgiving to you all out there in Cougartown!
For all you Turkey cookin' rookies out there, this probably won't work I did hear from Bob Reagan(HHS62) yesterday and swears by cooking the Turkey upside down. Makes all the juices run to the breast. I WILL try that one.

Message: First concert, Bobby Sherman at the Forum, somewhere around 1970! EEK! I wore a skirt, NYLONS (not pantyhose) and MOCASSINS!!! (Shoes, not snakes.) LOL! Thousands of screaming teeny-boppers! Best concert memory: Eagles, New Year's Eve 1974, when we opened the show as cheerleaders because the USC cheerleaders had backed out. Back stage passes, invite to the after-party. Quite a night for a naive 15 year old. Hope I make page 1000. Ten years, 1000 pages, that seems significant. Thank you JB for many years of laughs and memories, and for your friendship. You have made me laugh thousands and thousands of times. WE LOVE YOU!!!!
Hey Sharon, well back at ya' on that, and thanks for your dedication, friendship, and just plain funship over the years. Seems like just last month we all met at Cozemels for the first time. I thought then that this Cougartown thing might just be the MOST fun I've had in a long time. It has...

Message: Congrats John-On the 1,000 pages of fun filled memories and details about our classmates from HHS. It has been a long haul for you I'm sure but we all deeply appreciate your effort and continued dedication. My first concerts were Elvis Presley at the International Hotel in Las Vegas, as part of his "comeback" tour, then at the Inglewood Forum. While they were spectactular the Beach Boys at the Hollywood Bowl was a knockout. Hang in there for all us Cougars.
Hey Alan, It's been great, let's keep it going for another 1000 pages.

Message: Last concert attended...hmm..that would be a group out of Austin called Caedmon's Call...saw them at the Bren Auditorium in Irvine but most of y'all probably don't know them well. As far as headlining, secular musicians that would probably have to be Prince in '84 with Karen (Mann) Peterson. Kids and living abroad kind of got in the way of concerts. Regarding current ticket prices...friends of mine just paid a hefty sum to see Bruce "the Boss" Springsteen and were amazed at what floor seats the day of the show went for on Ebay..next time they will wait until the day of the concert and take their chances. Wish I'd known that for the Eagles recently.

So far the best concert that I attended was Neal McCoy at a county fair in Wisconsin - he wore you out just watching him. Best performance (it was a stage musical) I have ever attended was the King and I with Yul Brenner on tour in Chicago the year before Yul passed away.

Message: I kind of had a Cougar Sighting. Considering I haven't seen anyone from HHS because I have been living on an island , moving to Vegas has given me new Columbus type opportunities. I recently went over and saw John Hastings an on old friend of mine and his wife Susie. Is that a sighting? Also, congrats John on the best website on the Internet for old friends to come back together and stay in touch. Coming here truly makes me wish someone would invent a time machine. But, coming here is kind of like "going back in time". Love everyone here I will be in LA for meetings the second week of December then off to Hawaii for Christmas. This time to visit (first time in 20 years, just visiting). So I am sure it will be more fun. Oh remember when hitting the "100 page" mark was such a big thing. WOW 1000 pages. I just wish I would have been a bigger part of it. hehehehe
Hey Keith, although not a sighting, at least you're schmoozing with the Cougars. Thanks very much to you for your loyalty and stories over the past 10 or so years. We kid you Keith, but don't know how we'd have gotten along without you. Thanks for being a Cougar.

Message: First concert Elvis at the International Hotel in Vegas 60'. Wanted to get on 999 as my Badge num. here in Portland is #1999. I have worked off-duty at concerts and movie shoots in PDX for 35 years. Have seen alot of groups up close and their road crews work very hard. Working these details we judged the group playing by the type of buffet they put out. Best was always the Stones. Prime rib dinner for everyone back stage. The big groups took great care of their crews and officers working their security. And page 1000 is coming up. Thanks John, for helping Cougars to reconnect. You are "The Man"
Hey Carl, Thanks much but I think you saw Elvis in 1970 not 60. I was there in 1970 too. Great show.

Then every concert from 81-95 as I worked there also...some of the best I remember Duran Duran, Garth Brooks, always Van Halen, then the 7 nights of the Purple Rain guy, great sights for those nights. My last was Britney Spears at the Forum maybe 7 years ago with my daughter. Someday she will be able to say she went to her 1st concert at 5 years old....In a box a few months ago I found a bunch of programs and maybe 50 or more of the old KMET rainbow concert stickers that they use to give out the night of the concerts. Wonder if they are worth anything....

Back then they were still called "CTA" (Chicago Transit Authority). Best Concert: Beach Boys,'69 HHS Prom, Beverly Hilton; .....2nd Best: - Kink's @ the Forum, some year?; Worst: Van Morrison, Shrine Auditorium........
My first Chicago concert was about 74 at the Forum. Saw Van Morrison at the Amphitheatre at Universal in about 91. Just thought he should maybe stick to recording studios.

Message: My first concert was Journey and Loverboy at the Fabulous Forum. An eye opening experience has to be the Grateful Dead @ the Ventura County Fairgrounds. My favorites, in recent years, have been The EAGLES @ Staples Center and Boz Scaggs in Palm Springs, this summer. I was blessed, over my 14yrs working at the Forum (80-94), to see some of the best and the worst concerts. I'm sure Shannon could back me up on that. We always had Cougar sightings in the building. And alot of Cougar Alumni working there, too. Happy Thanksgiving, to all. p.s. Nice heartfelt sentiments, Mr. Sloey.

Message: Well I spent an hour calculating the page size less the density of the bandwidth divided by the neuron extrothincity of Al Gore's world wide web and I just think this might do it. In any event John, I did look at your first couple of pages of feedback today, you've come along way baby. Lives that have been touched, old friendships rekindled, lost loves that have been found and reignited, passings that occurred then and friends we have lost now, all things good and bad we have shared. We are a family connected through a middle class high school that we attended together and not together, one that we all have such fond memories. You have brought us together, united us [even more than Bill Callahan has united Husker nation] into our hangout on the web we call COUGARTOWN. This is quite a testament to you John Boy. Now we are about to embark upon reaching a real milestone of 1000 web pages of former classmates heart-felt feedback centered around what HHS meant to them. Thank you John and may God always bless you, you are Mr. Cougar.
Hi Jim, For the very first time, and you've left some 700 Feedbacks, I do believe you are serious this time. Thank you very much, my friend. You are one of my most favorite Cougars, and I'd never have known you existed had it not been for this place. Geez, I think I'm tearing up here..... Thank you all for the love shared, the friendships made, and the memories relayed. After 1000 pages, we've all become a REAL family; not connected by classes anymore but by our connection to our home, Hawthorne. I LOVE YOU GUYS MAAAANN!!!

Message: Just noticed what page CT is on so wanted to be there when it turned 1000! First concert was Creedence Clearwater Revival in I think 7th grade. Chaperoned by the Parks & Rec department so we couldn't even go to the bathroom by ourselves! Most fun concert was working a concession stand for Servomation (remember them?) on the field at the Coliseum and having a dead center view of the stage while Jethro Tull played. (Sharon B - I'm almost done I promise!!! I'm just taking a short break... I'm back on it... really...)
MAAANN!! It's feast or famine here

Message: I think you're confused John, it was Riley not Thorny. What a revoltin' development this is. Also the star of the Babe Ruth Story. According to my buddy Bruce Davidson, a really good guy too. And I believe Bruce. Just like you John. Are we there yet? [my dad would have been proud of that question.] And Paco it is a good thing Thorny didn't try to drown the Doc, we would never know if the Nelsons had a neighbor or not!

Message: Hey everyone, I see we are almost at page 1000! What an accomplishment JB, congratulations. I have been in touch with Bud and Wade. We are starting the initial planning for the 5th Cougar Classic golf tournament. We are looking at April 19th as the date, so pencil in that date! My first concert was Elton John at the Forum in 1973. My favorite concert, I would have to say Neil Diamond at the Forum in 2001 or 2002, but not because I'm a fan, but because of the group I was with, my Mom, Dad and sisters. We had a blast!

Message: Back in the early 60's, saw Ray Charles at the LightHouse in Hermosa, also (not sure of the year) Barry White would get up there on stage. There was a time you would see all these great guys play after hours. No drinking, just alot of Jazz. I'm sure that after hours playing was short lived. But it was fun expecially for us under 21. In the late 60's we were in Las Vegas at the Riviera and saw Diana Ross and the Supremes at a dinner show, It cost $25.00 for a couple back then and we had to dress formal, We thought that was expensive, but we had a great time. ALWAYS A COUG. This was fun getting the old mind moving!!!

Message: Paco has some older photos of Don "Thorny" DeFore in his vault. I have some later photos. I first met DeFore in 1976 at the GOP National Convention in Kansas City. Then I sat with Don and his wife on the plane en route to the 1980 GOP Convention in Detroit. Then we hung out in Dallas in 1984. I'll have to dig though my "vault." I can't believe someone who graduated in '57 doesn't remember Thorny.
Hey Paco and Armand, please don't send me Thorny pictures to add, thanks....

Message: Hi fellow Cougs, Great topic, concerts and also one of my favorite activities. My first was Chicago at the Forum ('76 or '77). I'm a music freak and have been to over a hundred concerts. The best were Niel Diamond (thank u 2 Laura it was all because of you), Dave Mathews Band, Yes, Eagles, Journey, Springsteen, REM, The Police in 1979 (Hollywood Paladium), U2, Squeeze, Oingo Boingo, Nova Star (great band check out 'Never Back Down' on Lime Wire or You Tube) and both US festivals. Whats really interesting is how people from different countries enjoy a show. The Dutch sing real loud, know all the lyrics and flick the lighters on the beat of the music. Just over the border in Belgium they listen very closely and are all music critics. In California its usually pretty laided back, that's probably because of all the lighters lighting up something just after the house lights are out. But when its time for the encore then California audiences explode!!! Music...... From musicals to a marching band or Classical to Rock and Roll; I love almost all of it!

Message: Hey John, In 1959 I used to go to the Lighthouse on Sunday afternoons to listen to the young jazz artists who later became some of the greats. Then in the '70's I would go to Circle Theater when I lived in Northern California. Saw some really great performers. Those were the great days. Also, John, not to sound like I have been living under a rock, but who is "Thorny"? Sonia
Thorny was played by Don DeFore and was Ozzie and Harriet's neighbor on the Ozzie and Harriet show..

John, I knew Thorny. Thorny was a friend of mine.* You're no Thorny. (*Actually his alter-ego, Don DeFore.) ;o)
Remember Ozzie and Thorny drinking hot cokes right out of the case in Thorny's garage?

Message: If it's not too late to jump in on the Best/First Concert topic of discussion, my very first concert I believe was in the Spring of either 1965 or '66. I was living in Buena Park at the time and went with a couple of girlfriends to Melody Music Circus. It was a round stage and almost right across the street from Disneyland if memory serves me. I don't think it held more than 250 people. That was the first time I saw the Beach Boys in concert. I can still remember what they wore - white pants and blue and white striped shirts (the wide stripe).Great subject Betty! And have a Happy Turkey Day JB!
Thanks Anita, Great memory....

Message: Does going to a jazz club count? Joe Mailander and I spent a lot of time at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach back in the mid-1970s -- one of the few jazz clubs to let minors in the door. (Concerts by the Sea in Redondo Beach usually had more famous bands, but I never got farther than the front door.) We saw a lot of great musicians -- none of them household names -- and most of whom (alas) are no longer with us.
Hey Ted, Thanks for the memory flogger (Concerts by the Sea). Great place to see some fun groups, and cheap too, as I recall.

Message: Cougar Sighting! I know, I know John, you're gonna try to disqualify this BUT I went to the wedding of daughter of Terri Murray '77 and niece of Marilyn Murray '74 in Wildomar,CA. Laura Keahey Johnson '73 and sister Sharon went with me and we had a blast. Marilyn was my joined at the hip pep squad BFF from HHS and I love her dearly. Have always been in touch but haven't SEEN her in person since 1994. She came all the way out from Florida and we love those Murray girls like crazy! What fun! They haven't changed or aged one bit. And Marilyn still has a laugh that brings out laughs in others - the visit was wonderful!

Message: Hey John, I saw the very last concert of Crosby, Stills and Nash. I was sorry to see them break up. My brother produced Rock and Roll concerts in 1959 and girls would run up to him asking him for his autograph as they thought he was Ricky Nelson. So, he signed, "with love, Ricky". Those were the fun days
Hey Sonia, They use to mistake me for Thorny.

And Tom Embry...at least you mentioned that the service was called the Army Air Corp, before it was created as its own entity, the Air Force (USAF) [the 8th being the most recognized, but the 9th also participated in concert during the Battle of the Bulge]
