Message: Hey JB, I guess you took it literally when it said "DO NOT LOSE THIS STUB" on that El Molino receipt. I'm amazed not only at what people keep but in that they can find it years later. I can't remember where I left my glasses 5 minutes ago. Take care all.......

Message: Gary Bickers, Since you played at UCLA, did you play with Larry Zeno? If so, do you know of his where abouts? He coached and recruited me to USL/ULL to play football back in 1975. I ended up playing Baseball instead, but lost touch with him following his departure from the university. Bill Sloey also requested some info on him if you have it. Thanks Gary.

Message: Hello CTowners I have a project that I have been interested in for some time now and I?ll ask for some help. I?ve talked with John Baker and I have his support as well. With your help, I?d like to collect as much of the Hawthorne High School?s sports history as we can remember. I'm looking for documented records. Finding scores and league records for the ?major? sports (football, basketball and baseball) shouldn?t be too hard. Much of that is listed in El Molinos. The other sports may be a little more difficult to ferret out. HHS has had outstanding cross country, fencing, tennis, track, wrestling, and water polo teams (with my apologies to those of you who participated in these endeavors and others not mentioned). I know, too, that there have been outstanding women in sport at HHS. In 1964, with the generous loan of a then ?complete? set of ?Cougars? from the Ol? Coach, Hal Chauncey, I put together a list of the top performances in each track event in the history of the school. I left a copy with the coaches, but I unfortunately do not seem to still have one myself. Sprint and relay records were subsequently shattered by the likes of Henry Thomas, Mike Marsh, et. al. Hawthorne still holds national high school records in the 4 x 400 meter relay in a blazing time of 3:07.40 and the sprint medley at 3:21.15. California State records include the fastest 100 meter (10.25 seconds) and 400 meters (45.09 seconds) by Henry Thomas. There are also numerous league, state and national records in the top ten times and distances. Dan Dye?s school record in the shotput and Jim Reale?s 9.9 in the 100 yard dash are notable. No record is immune from being broken, but I would like to see ?our? collective history preserved as best we can. Then, let?s broaden that to include not only the scores of games and sporting contests but oral histories, remembrances, and stories (I know the coaches have a bunch). Think of the just recently posted 1959 CIF football team newspaper history as an example that brought back a lot of memories for a lot of us. Hawthorne High School has produced great athletes and great coaches. I?d envision a sort of HHS Hall of Fame. Open for nomination would be HHS athletes and alumni who were outstanding either during or after graduating. Let?s create a Who?s Who list. Let?s not let these names fade away with time. Who knows, we might even try following this with an academic ?hall of fame.? Thanks in advance for any and all contributions you might make.

Message: HELLO JOHN AND FELLOW COUGARS IT'S BEEN AWHILE SINCE MY LAST POST. I WANT TO SAY HOW MUCH FUN IT WAS AT MY REUNION. SEEING EVERYONE THERE, IT WAS LIKE BEING A KID ALL OVER AGAIN. I WAS THERE UNTIL FOUR IN THE MORNING AND STILL DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE AND GO HOME. I WAS WITH CLASSMATES AND IT FELT SO GOOD TO BE WITH SO MANY PEOPLE THAT YOU HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON WITH. I HAVE ONE REGRET, I DIDN'T GET A PICTURE WITH CARL BANKS AND A FEW OTHERS. IT FELT LIKE THE NIGHT WOULD NEVER END AND THAT I HAD ENOUGH TIME TO GET PICTURES AND TALK TO PEOPLE AND BEFORE YOU KNEW IT, PEOPLE WERE GONE. LET'S NOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT TEN YEARS TO COME TOGETHER. MAKE IT FIVE YEARS. I DIDN'T GET TAMICA WOOLFOLK EMAIL. SO IF YOU READ THIS AND YOU KNOW HER PLEASE PASS IT ON. SORRY I MISSED THE CRUISE NIGHT, I'LL TRY TO MAKE THE NEXT ONE HOPEFULLY IT WON'T BE ON REUNION NIGHT AGAIN. WELL I'M SIGNING OFF FOR NOW HOPE ALL IS WELL WITH EVERYONE
OH YEAH I HAD A BIRTHDAY YESTERDAY NOW I'M THE SAME AGE AS MY CLASSMATES

Message: I tell you, it was really cool to cruise the A&W in Danny Kieffer's '55 chevy with his record player turned up loud playing songs like "Blue Angel" by Roy Orbison or "Little Bitty Pretty One" by Frankie Lymon or "Walk Don't Run" by the Ventures. I think you have some photos of Danny's '55. It would be great to see it in "Car Talk". Speaking of 45 records, I remember calling Alice Ramirez up and just before she would come to the phone I would put on "Put Your Head On My Shoulder" by Paul Anka. She said "Oh I hate that record." I think she was trying to tell me something. So, the next time you change the music on the Feedback page, would it be possible for you to change it to "PYHOMS"?

Message: It's ok John, The Big Red guys can pick on us Trojan fans!!! I also think Big Red did pretty good at making those points against the Trojans 2nd and 3rd stringers. I also thought it was real decent of coach Carroll to put them in so the score wouldn't be 79-10 or something like that. All Big Red has to do right now is stop playing top 10 teams and they'd wind up with a great season. Hey El Rojo I see Boise is doing real good and at #15 on SI.com's top 20.

Message: Well okay. If you want something to do this Sunday, Sept 23rd, rather than watch football all day (something I'm guilty of), then mosey on down (10:00am-3:00pm),to the Redondo Pier for their 3rd Annual "Rides, Rods and Relics" Car Show. (The Lobster Festival is also going on next door). This show features between 80-90 cars and is an invitation only exhibit. I'm honored to be one of those invitees (my '67 Stingray). So.....the only question for me is...should I wear my CT T-shirt and hope for a "sighting????"

Message: I'm back and I have nothing to plug! No golf tournament, no reunion, nothing! However, I did have a lovely lunch with Konnie Krislock, Sandra Bell, Bob Deuel and Vicki Barker on Sunday. I know better than to call it a cougar sighting since it was planned. This is the weekend that my last name changes, I am getting married! Love that "carphone" story that Bevan told, but the football stuff just goes over my head. I'm still hoping that the Dodgers find their way into the playoffs. Have a great weekend everyone!

Message: This is a response to John's inquiry to Russ about UCLA. I know we have been silent for a couple of days, but being a UCLA football letterman for 3 years I really feel I should respond. UCLA has a highly motivated, well conditioned and well coached team. Each time I see them they are ready to play and win. Each time I see them they get better and are fun to watch because they are having fun. The team and it's coaching staff should be the pride of the UCLA supporters and ALL of Los Angeles. I am speaking of the UCLA Women's Golf Team. See you in the Spring.

Message: JB, I just got back from the Lake Forest sheriffs office. This morning on my daily jog an old Ford pick-up pulled up beside me and two toothless pig farmers from the mid-west, I'd guess..Cover-alls and John Deere tattoos on their chubby little arms, kidnapped me. Once in the truck they started pulling fuzz from my petite little schnazz, boy, hurt like the Dickens. Anyway they made me give'em 70 points and I said "Make that yardage and it still wouldn't make a 100". Boy they stunk!! They finally dropped me off at some pretzel shop and drove away..All I could hear was "Squeal like a pig".

Message: John I don't know if this is so much Hawthorne related but here goes. The story about the record player brought back a memory. My dad had a big old 1956 chevy telephone truck he got at auction. He had a little hand held crank generator that would fit in your hand, it put out about 120 volts. I hooked up am old dial phone to it. While stopped at light, with the window down and before cell phones, on Inglewood Ave I would make the phone ring, the look on peoples faces when I answered the phone was priceless. Good mem of me and my dad in good ole Hawtorne.

Message: College football and Cougartown, bringing us together again. My brudder Bill and I have a Cougar sighting. Yesterday we were driving through Lake Forest when we ran into Paco--twice. Once with the front bumper and once with the back bumper. He's in the trunk now, gaged and hog tied - no derision meant Mary Ann - and he is humming the Nebraska fight song as I write this. He's not very musical but it's amazing how good he has gotten when Billy plucked a few nose hairs with a pair of pliers. So if any of you ever want to see Paco's picks again-send 60 no make that 70 points to memorial stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska. Don't send it to the Football office they won't know what to do with it. LOUDER PACO!!!! Billy did you miss a, that's better Paco...
