Message: COUGAR SIGHTING!! Today, out of the clear blue, who walked into my office to say hi but Martha Fisher Keus, c/o 77! Haven't seen her in about 25 years and have missed her wonderful smile and bright self! She happened to be in the area to have lunch with a former classmate (they'd reunited at the 77 reunion last month and were getting together to catch up), she was on the phone with my former brother in law, Greg (Stone) King, c/o 73 and he directed her to me. A grand surprise and she'll be at the next Cruise Night for sure. You'll all recognize her as the latin beauty with the million dollar smile! Love you Martha and so happy to see you again! Now post up here!
Thanks Sue for the Cougar Sighting and thanks again Martha and Eric for the dues check.

Message: I play golf every 3rd monday with my son in-law's father and a couple of his buddies. One surfer from HB and two Chevy parts managers. I was telling them the story of Mike Mecey's, and the BEST "Cougar Sighting" ever, story of meeting Kenneth of Kenneth Chevrolet in a barber shop. Well it seems that one of golfers is a Cougar and worked at Kenneth as a parts guy and salesman for about 5 years in the 70's, he is David Orlaska class of 1967.
Thanks Paco, and THIS is a Cougar Sighting too.

By the way Lou was out here last week for the retiree luncheon they do twice a year. He's sends a hearty hello to everyone.. Anyway, as for too much Eric Clapton and Steely Dan, I don't know if you can much of either!!!
For you and me, no, but for kids, there might be too much hemp smoke floating about
Hey back to Coach Jones too. He was a favorite at HHS.

Message: Hey John, How about those BYU Cougars? Not an outstanding game but pretty good considering our quarter back is just a sophomore and notwithstanding all of the penalties against us. UCLA's quarterback (Olsen) went to the Y but our past coach, rest his soul, never let him play, so, his Dad took him out of school and got him into UCLA. I'm a Hawthorne Cougar and a BYU Cougar (went to BYU in the early seventies). Hope Boise State does well this year. They deserve a little more media. Regards Jim
Was gone tonight, Jim, and didn't see that one.

Message: FYI...I saw that my brother Wayne Layral is on a missing list. He's not missing. He lives in Mira Loma, CA and is head swim coach of Corona City Swim Team. He and his wife Pam have been married 31 years, have 2 grown adult children and 6 grandchildren. His twin, Andre' Layral lives in Fairbanks, AK and is a retired Middle School Principal and now travels the state as an educational program facilitator. He is a fishing maniac and spends a good deal of his spare time do that. He and his wife of 34 years, Sheri, travel as often as they can in their 35' motor home. They have two grown children and nearly 3 grandchildren. Andre' is also an active member of the Rotary club and he and Sheri often sponsor/accommodate foreign exchange students in their home. I and my husband of 37 years, Terry, live in Oregon where we enjoy the outdoors/gardening; our pets and our home. We choose not to have children, left it to my sibs. I work in accounting for a large food company. Gilbert Layral, our father, passed in Feb 2007. He was founder and coach of the Hawthorne Swim Team. Our younger sibs, Lisa; Lance & Lynn Layral are all married and live in So. Cal with their families. Now you have the scoop on the Layral's.
Hey Nancy, Thanks very much for the information on your family. Now why in the world aren't they on the Alumni List? Actually the missing lists are lists originally sent to me by reunion committees. They were useful at one time, but now all you have to do to become UN-missing is to add your info to the system. Thanks again....

Message: I still remember the first night Zaccaglin pulled that 409 in Foster's on 120 Street. It sounded like the world was coming to an end. I think the front hood was off the car but I am not positive. I only saw one bigger at Fosters; a 1965 Dodge MO-PAR came through there one night and moved the building over about 3 inches. The Dodge lived in West LA and I saw it many times in Westwood; moving buildings.

Message: Hey JB, am I mistaken, or were there two 409's? One was basically a truck engine and the other was fitted in passenger cars?????
Yep, Chevy put the detuned 409 in their big trucks too. The 409 was based on the 348cu.in. engine which was initially designed for their trucks in 1958. In 1961, Chevrolet stepped up to 409 cu.in. to compete with Ford's 390 motor.

Message: Jim Gibson's post has finally caused me to raise a question that I have been wondering about for some time. After enjoying the feedback for some years, I am amazed at how many contributors have mentioned owning a car with a 409 motor. When I was a kid in Hawthorne in the sixties a 409 was a pretty rare sight. I worked at the A&W for several years and very rarely saw a Chevy with a 409. But to read the feedback page you would think that every car in the South Bay must have come equipped with one. Did they still offer them in 64? I'm not sure how many 409s General Motors actually made but they all must have been sold by Kenneth Chevrolet. Let me be the first to admit that my famous '59 Impala "Big Rider" only had a 283 with Power Glide. My current Ford Van, of course, has a 409. Carl
My dad had a 409, as did my friends Bob Reagan, and Bob Fraser. Vic Zaccaglin Jr. had a 409, Harry Joseph's kid (can't remember his first name) had a 409. One of the Skaffs (Tom or Jerry) had a 409. EVERYBODY had a 409.
409s were manufactured from 1961 to 1964 with the first year being a 380hp 4 barrel model. 62 and 63 were either 4 barrels or dual 4 barrel 409hp and all came standard with Borg Warner 4 speeds. You could get the big motor in 64 too but also a tamed down hydraulic cam version with a powerglide. Don't know how you missed them Carl, they were everywhere.
