Message: Seeing all the constructions going around me in Portland where there is still farmlands 20 mins from downtown Portland! They just added 4 blocks from me a huge play park with 4 baseball diamonds and 3 full size soccer field. Then I was thinking...I wonder how ol' Hawthorne used to be like? Well, with Walt Dixon book I got some answers but Alondra Park stirred my mind and I wonder what that place used to be like or was...before the man made pond and park and golf course was added. And...what is the best Park to visit in Hawthorne? I always thought Prairie Park was cool. Anyone?
Hey Raymond, It'll take someone older than me to tell you what Alondra was like before the pond. It was there when I was a little kid. One mistake in the Walt Dixon Hawthorne book that I know of is the Baker Cash Feed Store is listed in the 50s, but should have been the 30s.

Message: Hey Cougs: Can someone guess the actual dimensions of Senior Square? From all the yearbooks and old newspapers I'm looking at, it seems like 25'by 25' but that's just a guess. Anyone have a more definitive idea? Thanks! The benches look to be about 8'long and three per side. The Alumni Association plans to rebuild it on the west side of Nyman hall.
Hey Clark, sounds about right to me. Anyone else??

Message: Hey Don, I Remember that saying "There is no life east of Sepulveda". I believe it was 1977 and went to work wearing that tee shirt. I worked at Max Factor & Co., located at the corner of Van Ness Ave and El Segundo Blvd in Hawthorne. I almost started a early morning Riot there. Goes to say when I left work later that day, I was wearing my work shirt. I now live 300 miles east of Sepulveda, in a city that is full of life. See you all at the reunion...

Message: JB, what are you talking about? The Long Beach Poly team was a bunch of pussies when we played them in the 65/66 season. Ha, not really. They were still a very strong team then but the Cougars went for revenge and came home with a 20 to 0 score for the win. This was the first skunk for the mighty LBP in decades.
AHHHH, Sweet Revenge!!!

Message: John, The newspaper articles are really fun to read. I was at the Long Beach Poly game and remember the feeling of importance just being there from Hawthorne. I bet we would have won that game too had we played on our own field. Hawthorne was the most inspiring team I have ever watched play. Still waiting to hear more about it from those who were there.
I don't know about the winning part. LB Poly had Willie Brown, a halfback averaging 10 yards a carry and Lonzo Irvin, a fullback, averaging about 8 yards a carry. They were a VERY fast team that could have competed in the Pac 8, in my opinion.

Class: 1975
City & State: Bloomington, CA

Message: Can someone tell me how did the Cougars do in the CIF games back in 1959? I was only 2 so I have no idea.
Hi Diana, Well after the Samohi game we went on to CIF, winning the first week against El Rancho 25-20; then on to play Glendale where we won 9-7. That put us in the Championship game on December 11th 1959 against Long Beach Poly in the Los Angeles Coliseum. We lost our first and only game of the season that fateful night, something like 42-20 (really have blocked that score from my mind).

Message: Calling all Cougars: The Class of '71 and '72 Reunion is just around the corner on August 24-25. All classes are invited and it would be great to see our friends from '70, '73, 74 in attendance. If you are still sitting on the fence thinking about whether to come or not, please think about this....we ain't getting any younger and opportunities to re-connect with your past are far and few between so take advantage now. You don't want to wind up on the Cougar obituary list having regrets about missed chances. Hey Wolfman, Shelton, Willis, and Johnson, we hope to see you there !

Message: Linda-I always thought you Dad's first name was Mister. He was a great guy. I remember breaking the glass on the fire extinguisher in the cafeteria one day accidentally leaning on it while in line. I was dragged from the cafeteria by one of the lunch ladies to see Mr. Nelson. We found him talking with MR. Sutton. I explained to Mr. Nelson what happened and before he could say a word, Mr. Sutton said "I'll fix it-no big deal." Mr. Nelson said nothing, I returned to the cafeteria to my spot in line and the lunch lady bent Mr. Nelson's ear for 20 minutes probably about how it was not an accident. Give my best to your Dad.
I always loved that lunch lady....

Message: God I love the Samo High game talk. Just two quick things:Watching from the stands that night along with 50 or so football players insured HHS football teams for the next three or four years. We were all so excited by the play of that team that everyone wanted to win Bay League and go to CIF like that team. What we did not know that night was we would lose all those great coaches. The other thing was the B team beat Samo that afternoon. The best play of the game has half way through the fourth quarter and the game was already won. A pass over the middle by Samo and our middle linebacker, one Paco Duran, ducked to get out of the way of that pass. The next huddle we could not stop laughing. Howard, you are the best.
Yeah, he's one sick puppy, allright, Thanks Gar'...
