Message: Angela very sorry to hear about Dave. He was a nice guy. I remember trading my 69 Nova for his motorcycle which was not street legal (off road) and I would ride to Chevron refinery down the railroad tracks so cops couldn't get me. I remember when he invented that trash compactor that used your car in the garage to compact the trash. Again, very sorry to hear about Dave.

Message: My Grandmother tells the story of when she came to Los Angeles for a visit and my father was driving her across town on Exposition Blvd. There was a trolley car behind them and the Trolley Driver was ringing his bell because my father wasn?t driving fast enough. Dad was showing Grandma the sights. The more the Trolley Driver rang the bell the slower my father drove until he came to a complete stop blocking the Trolley. So the Driver got down off the trolley and started toward my dad?s roadster. For anyone who remembers my dad, he was a slight man of about 135 pounds and about 5?6?. Dad said he knew he was in trouble when he looked in the mirror and saw this very large man coming towards him. As soon as the driver got to my dad?s door, dad pushed it open with all of his might and hit the Trolley Driver in the lower gut. Grandma said the driver doubled over and that my dad took off and gave her the ride of her life down back alleys for at least 20 minutes. My dad said that he never realized that the Trolley couldn?t follow him until he reached Santa Monica. I don?t ever remember riding on any of the street cars but I do remember the tracks running up Hawthorne Blvd. Don't forget about the Class of 71/72 Reunion in August.
Great story. Thanks Bob....

Message: The red #5 trolley brings back fond memories and I was on it a lot - just for fun! My dad and I also rode it to downtown LA and back on its final day of operation. After the rails were removed, the city installed median parking, because they could get more parking spaces for the businesses. I always thought it'd be a good idea to buy, refurbish and display one at the Memorial Center area.

Message: Street cars: The Orange Empire Rail Museum in Perris, CA, still runs street cars around their facility on the weekends. Basic information is posted on their web site, www.oerm.org, but it does not do the place justice. They are constantly restoring old rail cars, street cars, engines, etc. A great place to take the family. Last time I was there they had an old ?5 car? that once ran through Hawthorne. It was stored in one of the buildings waiting to be restored. Just climbing aboard for a couple of minutes brought back a lot of memories. - Baxter

Message: I've read a few posts about the Streetcars that ran along Hawthorne Blvd and some have ask if there are any left and running somewhere? Yes! Just go to San Francisco; you'll find all descriptions of historic Streetcars in prime condition running along Market Street, down to Fisherman's Wharf and back again. Below street level is the Muni lightrail and below that is the BART. And of course the world famous Cable Cars are still running on two lines with a fare charge of $5.00 for a one way trip! My Dad worked for the L.A. Transit Lines and operated those Streetcars in the"Early days." Johnny Mercer was his conductor (yes, it's true) and Mr. Mercer told my Dad if his music paid off he would leave the L.A.T.L. He left and Moon River came along a few years later.

Message: Hey Cougartown. Just checking in. Been gone awhile, 4 years actually, living and working in Cheyenne, WY. Finally had enough of living in a backwards cow town with nothing much to do on the bare, windswept Northern Plains and the wife begging me several times daily to move back to civilization, so we finally relocated earlier this year. We're living in Aurora, CO, now and I'm working in Englewood. Love the job, love Aurora and the Denver area. My wife found a job in Loveland, but grew tired fast of the 65-mile commute and found a new job near downtown Denver. This place is full of California exiles and has the largest percentage (32%) of Baby Boomers (=old farts like me) in the country. My sister, Mary (Burt) Henry (class of '75) and her husband will be shipping out to Oklahoma this fall. Like us, they've had just about enough of the sad, congested mess that southern California has become. Cheers.
Hey Michael, Thanks for letting all your friends know you're out there. Check in anytime with a Hawthorne story or two. The only Burt I could find is George. Is that you?

Message: The 66/67 reunion is just around the corner so if you?re still thinking about coming but you?re not really sure about the commitment because you don?t know if your old high school gang will be there, HERE is a great example: Steve Fraser has spent the last few months rounding up (harassing) his friends. He has even done it from his hospital bed. The Monty and the Crystals group has prodded all their friends to come. We got a great email the other day from Chuck Armstrong saying he was finally giving in and coming. It will give Linda Wilson some free time as she has spent her time rounding up all the ?Crystals?. What I?m saying here is that there is still time to contact those friends you really would like to see and ?prod? them into coming. And if they can?t come, well come anyway, because there are still going to be a lot of us there (150 and counting) and even if we didn?t hang out together 40 years ago, we?ll hang together on July 21st at the South End in Torrance. Thanks, Steve and Linda, for helping to make this an event we won?t forget. BE THERE OR BE SQUARE. P.S. Mike Conor - The reunion has not happened yet. But, Polly Hattemer is coming so if you'd like to see her, there is still time to make it.
Don't miss your reunions Cougs, you NEVER get them back.

Message: Hello John, check out this Cougar sighting. Every year, my brother, two nephews and I, go hiking camping in the eastern high sierra's. This year it was gem lakes. A four mile hike thru little lakes valley from mesquito flat trailhead at 10,300', for 3 days. We set up camp at marsh lake. my hephew tony and i went for a hike to gem lakes. further up the trail, he spotted some movement up on a ledge about a hundred yards or less to our right. We stopped, I got my binoculars out and saw the head of a Cougar peering at us. Tony confirmed the sighting. It was too far, and no time to take a picture, the Cougar took off behind the ledge a moment later a nervous moment for us. The only defense we had were two scott ski poles for hiking, very rigid. You could easily take down a bad guy with one of these in your hand, we didnt want to, tested by a Cougar, and by the way, we were snacking on beef jerky on the trail, the Cougar must have been salivating at us like I do at Victoria Secret Models. We made it thru the day, a fortuitous event. Lucky we didn't encounter the Cougar and lucky to have seen one. We also came across a different class of people, very friendly. Unlike some of these velocitaptors and maggots we deal with in town and on freeways. I wish I could have gotten a picture of the Cougar with its ears drawn back peering at us. Check out rock creek lake web site, and see this beautiful area. I have not seen any HHS Cougars in town while riding my Schwinn. JB YOU DO A FANTASTIC JOB WITH COUGARTOWN. YOU DA MAN

Message: It is with great sadness that I report the passing of my former husband, Robert (Bob) Thomas, Class of 1964. Bob has been ill for many years, but his passing was a shock to the family. Bob was so proud to attend Hawthorne High! He used to lift weights with Carl Wilson and fondly remembered the day Carl walked in to announce "hey, we're cutting a record!" Bob's response? "Yeah, right!" Beach Boys music played at his service this past Friday in Boise, ID. Bob was the President of the HHS French Club and active throughout his years at Hawthorne High. He also served as a Master Counselor of the Hawthorne Chapter Order of the Demolay. For anyone interested, the family is requesting that contributions be made to the Acoustic Neuroma Association 600 Peachtree Parkway, Suite 108, Cummings, GA 3004, or on their website http://www.ANAUSA.com.
Suzanne, Very sorry to hear of Bob's passing, but thanks much for the information.

Message: Lets Put A roof On John's house for his tenth year with Cougartown! We can get it done! What say you? By the bye I know some Gypsies who will gladly take your money and vanish! they really do the best job at that! Seriously I think it would be a nice present and a very down home thing to help our JB1 out here!
Geez Britt, Thanks for the kind thoughts but it's two houses. Better take care of this one myself. If you want to do something for me, show up at a Cruise Night or the Ctown picnic so we can meet in person. I've met a whole bunch of fun Cougars in the last 10 years.
