Message: thanks Adrianne--next time i talk to my grandmother I'll tell her what u said about Norwalk. it was 114 here the other day--cooled off to 105 today--I miss the cool ocean breeze coming off of manhattan Beach. I miss the ocean where i grew up. really bad. when i was a kid i used to walk to the beach if i missed the bus--i remember an art gallery that belonged to Violet Parkhurst on Highland Ave. i used to stick my nose against the glass window and peer in. then one day many many years later--my own ocean paintings appeared in her gallery! not the same gallery--but one she had at Ports'o'call. once you get salt water blood in your veins--u are never the same.

Message: First, before I forget, to John a good painter is Advance Painting in Manhattan Beach. Second, although Jim Harrison is not related to me his mom, Wilma and my mom, Sally have been friends for many years and involved in the same Masonic based organizations. I met him once years ago. Had I been more tuned in to CT on a more regular basis I would have been able to share with my own mom the info regarding Jim's memorial. She would have gone to support her friend, Wilma who did actually call my mom the 4th to share her sad news. Coincidentally, my own father was also Jim Harrison. RIP Jim Harrison (both of you)

Message: Just wanted to share that I remember Mr. Plotkin's math class and all the number games we played one year in summer school. He reminded us that some of us would be newly graduated high school students on 7/7/77. That seemed so far away then, and it seems far away now! I wasn't lucky enough to get Mr. P for a teacher during the regular school year, but those who did considered themselves lucky! Happy 7/7/07 Cougs!
For this reason I remember 7/7/77. I was listening to Dick Whittinghill that morning on 710 KMPC and he rang a bell, then said at that tone it was the 7th second of the 7th minute of the 7th hour of the 7th day of the 7th month of the 77 year. I knew I'd need that someday, and today, 10957 days later, we could have done the same thing.

Message: Hello everyone. This comes courtesy of Redd Kross. Two of the band members (Steven and Jeff McDonald) are HHS grads from the early 1980s. This is from the band's manager, who sent me the following email this morning: "Not to be a downer, but I really feel bad for this girl and what she is going through, not just now but for the rest of her life, all because somebody out there was REALLY STUPID. If we can help find this idiot and hold them responsible for the utterly wrong action they took and how it affected a young person, all the better. Please help spread the word. All they need is credible witness and to find the guy. Roisin Isner, drummer for the San Francisco band Tinkture lost her hand in Dolores Park last night watching the fireworks. Roisin's father says Roisin and friends were in Dolores Park watching fireworks. Some stupid person threw an M60 at them. It landed on Roisin's right hand and blew it apart. She has undergone surgery but it doesn't look good. Most likely she will lose her index finger. Her second and third fingers will also be permanently impaired and disfigured. Needless to say, her musical career is over. Her dad is offering $20,000 for a name." Thanks
Thanks Dave, for the info. Hope someone can help.

Message: Norwalk is my neighboring city. It is all businesses and homes now, except for one diehard dairy on Rosecrans, owned by the Vanderham family. The cows from this area moved to Norco years ago. We had cows less than a block from us when we moved to our first home in Norwalk. As a child, my mom would drive me to visit a North American co-worker in Norwalk, and we too loved the country atmosphere. Now the cows have moved from Norco to up North.

Message: AH street car rides to downtown LA during Christmas time with mom, thank's for the memories. Glad to hear Steve's back on here but he's still on my pray list. Had a great 4th and hope everyone else did too. Hey JB, if I get together with sis (59) and husband (58) is that a Cougar sighting? Cause that happens alot.
Hey Deano, Actually that's a planned event. Cougar sightings are chance events. Say, you were in Starbucks in Oregon or Home Depot in Tustin, and accidentally ran into someone that also went to HHS. That would be a Cougar Sighting.

Message: Hi, I'm just reading in Feedback, about Jim Harrison. He also worked for TWA, and there is a Memorial at the VFW in Hawthorne, tomorrow, at 4:00pm. John, do you have a picture of Jim Harrison? I have been retired from American Airlines for 5 years now, and cannot remember his face. From which class did he graduate? Any particulars would be appreciated. On my brother Ken's services, which were held last Friday, at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills. It was a spectacular memorial to a great guy. Gardena Mayor Tanaka was there, and spoke, as did family and friends. There was a dove (Homing pidgeon) release of 66 - one for every year of Ken's life. It was glorious! Take care, Linda
Thanks Linda

Message: Hi fellow street car riders...I too rode the street car when I was 14 (1954). I took the streetcar from Hawthorne High to USC Dental College to have braces put on my teeth and had to go once a week to the college. I remember being the only young person on the street car and was never bothered. I never gave it a thought that I was alone. I loved the street car and the click-clacking of the wheels on the tracks.

Message: Just got word of Jim Harrison's service. It will be a short Memorial 07/06 at 4:00pm VFW Post-Canteen 4563 W. 131st St. The family will be returning to their homes shortly after the service. Jim had a sister named Marge, I think she graduated just ahead of him by a year or two. He retired from TWA Airlines a few years ago and I would imagine they will turn out in full force. We look forward to seeing a big HHS turn out also. Sorry for the short notice, just received it.
Thanks Jody....

Message: I did ride the streetcar a few times when I was very young but it was always with an adult so I do not remember my fare. What I can verify was that the Eucalyptus bus that served North-West Hawthorne and Del Aire to Downtown Inglewood, charged a whole seven cents for us under twelve?s in the mid-fifties. That included a transfer if needed. Can you imagine putting your seven year old on a bus to spend the day at the movies and return hours later today?
No I can't. In fact, you would probably have child services at your door. I can remember riding our bikes to Inglewood to see a movie, leaving them in a pile on the sidewalk, never locked. They were always there when we got out.

Message: HI JB, today i was looking at an old pic of my grandmother. she was the reason my folks moved to Hawthorne in the first place--1948. she lived on 118th street with my uncle Richard Romero (he's a little older then i am so someone out there might just remember him) my mind went back to trips with her in the car--i remember how she loved the smell of NORWALK--why? she loved the smell of the cows. she had grown up on a ranch in Mexico and the smell of the cows took her "back home". I hated the smell--i wonder if NORWALK still has cows right next to the main highway? my guess is it's all homes and buildings now.( boy, am I ever old!?!) and I, too, remember the streetcars! right down the center of the road on Hawthorne blvd. oh the Times they are a changin'
Hey Karen, Oh the times, they HAVE CHANGED. I can remember my dad talking in the 60s about how much Hawthorne had changed since he went to school there. I guess things just keep evolving.

Message: To Denny (class of '55); Red car fares back then were: 1928-45 7 cents; 1946-51 a 'thin' dime; and 1952-56 15 cents. Times HAVE changed! (remember 7 sticks of gum for 5 cents?)
Remember street car tokens?

Message: Cougar sighting. Yesterday, before seeing "Ocean's 13" at Rolling Hills Plaza, I stopped at a Starbucks. The young lady running the counter, Veronica (Luna?), HHS 1997, recognized my Cougartown T-shirt. I didn't get a discount but I did find more caramel in my Venti-Decaf-Iced-Caramel-Macchiado. How sweet! In south Torrance the Cougartown T-shirt has attracted the attention of rival South High alumni, but most of them are too old to kick my butt, those my age usually know mutual friends, and the younger ones feel sorry for me and leave me alone. So I meet a lot of nice people and then turn them on to Cougartown.
Hey Lar', Very funny and a great Coug sighting too. Thanks very much....

Message: As a kid the best fireworks show in town was at the L.A. Colosseum. Think I was a freshman when on the 4th my cousin and I boarded the #5 streetcar in Hawthorne and headed up the tracks to Santa Barbara Ave. which went by the Colosseum. I don't remember what the show inside was that night and we didn't have the money to get inside anyway but several hundred of us sat around in Exposition Park outside and waited for the fireworks. Don't think anyone was disappointed. The 5 car isn't here anymore, Santa Barbara Ave. is now named (Martin Luther Kind Junior Boulevard) and the cousin lives in Alaska and has a kazillion descendants. Don't remember what the streetcar fare was but I'll bet the whole trip didn't cost much more than a quarter. Postscript: The #5 car didn't produce any air pollution.

Message: For the seven years I was a Hawthorne resident, and member of the City of Hawthorne Area Youth Band (financed by County youth programs), the band provided a dusk time music concert at Alondra Park, which was followed by the fireworks show (fired from the island). Little did I realize at that time, that my future wife was in that audience.

Message: Out our way, all the cities had TNT fireworks stands. Even in Orange County. Not a Red Devil in sight, as in past years. But I think TNT owns all of them now, because on 2 Norwalk stands, under the large TNT, was an old Freedom logo. Since our festivities moved from the park behind us, to Civic Center, it's not the fun it used to be. No picnics or BBQ's. That's because people would come from far away at 6 a.m., and set up their tents and large BBQ's, taking away from the simplicity of the park. The new location last year had the great Platters. This year we opted to stay out of the crowds for Dean Torrence and Surf City. We were pleasantly surprised to find out we can watch the fireworks from our house, so all was not lost. They were spectacular. I do miss my childhood times on the hill at Centinela Park.
Thanks Adrianne...
