Message: A "Wich Stand" story from 1960 regarding Brian Tully and my "borrowed" 1939 Pontiac with a wild paint job. At the time, I had a custom paint shop which Brian visited one Friday afternoon and begged to borrow the Pony. (Pontiac) I told him no repeatedly but eventually gave in to his desire for this one particular night to cruise with a friend of his from the "A" (A&W in Hawthorne) to the "Stand" (Wich Stand) as we called them then.
On one of his trips leaving the "Stand" a second car pulled up along side and told Brian and his friend, the car looked like a piece of "S---" to which Brian responded in a like manner. As the two cars with two guys stared to pull over and settle things two additional guys popped up from the back seat of the other car. Brian not liking the odds took off. At the bottom of Overhill Brian stopped behind another car waiting for other cars to pass. The guys behind jumped out and approached the car. Brain quickly jammed the Pony into reverse and stomped on the gas only to bend over the accelerator rod causing the car to stall. One guy reached Brian's side of the car just as he started to roll up the window. To Brian's surprize the glass was broken and only half of the window appeared. Seconds later Brian was on the wrong end of a large fist which struck his face leaving a very large swollen lip and bloody nose. When Brian appeared at my shop on Saturday morning to return the car everyone was rolling on the ground with laughter as Brian tried to tell us his cruise story with a fat lip and very arranged face. Hope you enjoyed the story. Brian just told me he would never share which I thought would also get us closer to 100 pages. And Fosters.
Great story Alan. Brian, Are you out there and would you like to amend this story in any way??

My folks just heard from his daughter that he died this week. Mike had a brain tumor and died during surgery. Mike was a good person and one of the funniest people I have ever known. Message: John,
Have you found The Theme from "A Summer Place" by Percy Faith yet? If not, look no further, I have it! I also have all kinds of music from the 50's and 60's.
I saw Bill (Dana) this past weekend. I'm going to call him today and leave a message for him inviting him to Cruise Night. I have told him all about it, and hopefully he'll come. I know he would love to see some of his ex-students. Well if I can be of any other help...please let me know.
Also, someone (I didn't go back through feedback) was asking about Don Dye. Don use to be a Hawthorne Police Officer. He was famous for his car crashes! I believe he left the department in the late 70's or early 80's. I'm trying to get a hold of one of the "old timers" to see if anyone knows his whereabouts. As soon as I hear anything I'll let feedback know.
Until Cruise Night....Bye, Bye.
Hi Mo, Yes, please bring TFASP and any other oldies that you have on tape or CD. If anyone brings tapes and CD's, please mark them just like the old days. Do we have "Sea Of Love" and "In The Mood" yet?? Thanks.....

Message: Keith-Can't wait to see you for micro-mini #4! The North Shore is beautiful as usual. I was at Waimea Bay the past two weekends and it was as smooth as glass. (Which is good for me because I don't like fighting the waves with my 4 year old). When the Krikacs were here my nephew Kory was snorkeling out in the bay and a sea turtle swam right by him. He followed it around awhile. The next weekend we saw a turtle there again.
Did you know we have Bubba Gumps here now in Ala Moana Shopping Center? It's a fun place to eat -- very loud and crazy. Ryan's Grill is one of my favorite restaurants. Maybe we'll have to hit them all!
Beth, it's good to hear from you. I remember Donna Aveni now that you mention her, but not sure what you're talking about. Sounds like something tragic. Glad to hear you are doing well. I moved to Hawaii after graduating from Pepperdine. I came here to work on my masters degree at UH. (At least that's what I told my family!) I've been here 20 years now and I'm still "working" on it :) Having this website has really helped me to feel more a part of things back home. I've lost touch with almost everyone, so it's great to hear from old friends here. Thanks again John for this terrific site! I try to read it every day. I think whoever goes to Cruise Night at Foster Freeze ought to pay for John's sundae!
Thanks Cyndi for that. Your dollar's in the mail girl.

(if we can make it) It sounds like you had a great time at the party. I would have enjoyed seeing you guys and talking about old times. Do you remember the freshman kidnaps when we would kidnap all the incoming band freshman and drive them all over Hawthorne. I was just talking to my band kids about that at a meeting today and we all figured that if we tried to do that today we would probably all end up in court. Times have changed. Did anyone every get away with TPing John Ogren's House? Hey, to any band, auxillary, or drill team members, we sure had some great times together. How about hearing from some of you about memories from the past. Does anybody know where Danny Ruedas is? We were good friends growing up, especially during the Aviation Little League days. I'm still playing soccer nearly year round. Every year in January, our team called the COUGARS (named after our alma mater) consisting of players from Leuzinger, Lawndale, South Torrance, North Torrance, and Culver City High Schools reunite to play in a huge tournament in Las Vegas. I also referee between 250-300 games per year ranging from youth games, high schools, universities and pro games. I even got to referee the men's and women's U.S. National Teams a couple of years back.Isn't it a shame that we only got to play for HHS our senior years, but what a year! Now I have not seen Tom in 36 years, but as soon as he opened the door I recognized him immediately-with a little help from my '63 El Molino before leaving! :) Tom and his wife, Cheryl, were the perfect hosts and in a few short minutes I felt as if we had been continuous friends for all these years!
While talking about old times, I mentioned to Tom that I thought Ernie Nixon ('63) also lived in Bakersfield. After looking him up in the telephone book we found one Ernie Nixon and called him. Sure enough, it was the right guy and he came right over. I could only spend a couple hours with them, but I must say that we had a great time! Thank you Ernie for coming over and thank you Tom for bringing back memories that I have not thought about for what seems like eons. I hope we can stay in touch from now on and maybe meet at Cruise Night, Homecoming in October and/or our 40th reunion in 2003.
And John Baker, I know you have heard it many times before, but without this great web site, all these reunions of old friends would never have been possible . . . THANK YOU!!!!

I have to tell you about a group of girls growing up back in the late 70's and 80's who were so awesome. They grew up playing against each other in AYSO and they made up the 1st Soccer Team at HHS, anyone of these girls could have been one of those ladies out there this week end. Anyone out there who was around to watch these girls knows what Im saying. These girls played with their hearts. Jimmy Stone was the coach (Jimmy and his wife Peggy are from HHS), His little sister Jennifer, made those side kicks look so easy, Amy and Anna the twins were all over that field, they went on to play college Soccer, Jayme Bradford loved running with that ball, Erica Henderson, She was the very 1st girl who loved to do those side tackles and was not afraid that she could break a leg, Heidi Garcia when they saw her coming toward them they knew nothing would stop her, she was like a truck. Our Darla was a good kicker, but a better Goalie. Miriam Penna loved running that field and Kristie Perkins was a good little goalie. There were so many other girls those years, but all of these Young ladies were just a few years too early. Just seeing this game this week-end, brought back a flood of good memories.
