Message: Another Famous person for Hawthorne is Max Factor Jr. Although he didn't live in Hawthorne, his Cosmetic plant was located at El Segundo Blvd and Van Ness Ave for close to 40 years, it has since been torn down. Max Factors main office is located at Mccadden/Sunset Blvd and Hawthorne Ave. Just east of Hollywood High. I worked for Max Factor & Co. in Hawthorne from 71 to 79 and visited The Hollywood Location a lot to research new shades and fragrances of cosmetics. There were many famous faces wandering around but the girls in their white smocks held me captive in the reserch LAB, it was all work and I never got to meet any Famous people. DARN! IT!

Message: No O-Slo-one, but if I have to explain it........well, you know. I should of known the Glasser twin. He was on my Middle League Team. Slick fielding second baseman. All glove, no stick. His twin brother must of been better. The first girl in row two? She may be an ex-wife of mine also. Very familiar. Wake up Dean-0. That's all you know from your class. You must of spent a lot of time out in the hallway, or getting smacked with a ruler. And then again (for Sloey)-- as Robert Redford playing the Sundance Kid in the movie Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, said, "who are those guys?" One last question. Does anybody REALLY know who threw the knife through the Plaza screen? Bruno Hauptmann? (Don't ask Sloey)

Message: WOW, Diana, that's incredibly cool! So glad I could play a small role! He looked great! He was wearing a sports coat (to a Pink Floyd tribute show!) and was going strong despite the fact that it was 12:30am when I chatted with him. He did not mention his birthday but that might have been the motive for the Motorhome! Glad to have been of service!

Message: Cougar sighting! Mark Escovedo, Class of '75, went to the Which One's Pink? show last weekend at the Canyon in Agoura and handed a note to the security guy telling me he was in the crowd. I found him after the show -- he had driven a Motorhome to the Canyon and had quite a party going! He had heard about Which One's Pink? here on Cougartown but was sorely disappointed to learn that all I do is "sound effects" and that I'm not "really in the band" My apologies Mark -- but we did have a Cougar Sighting so it's all good! Here's a link from YouTube from that night with one of my raving lunatic schoolmaster bits on Another Brick in the Wall Pt. II

Row 4 #2 is Joe Walters. And #2 on the bottom row is Mary Brooks(former Hawthorne Mailman) Many look familiar, especially the smart-alec twins. As Robert Redford once said, "Who are those guys?" I'll take Charlie Weaver to block.

Message: Boy oh boy John you keep trying and failing with me. Please read the story. I said nothing about people at Dana. If you have ever been to Holy Glen and saw that fields during soccer, football or baseball season then you probably would feel pretty dumb making that statement. But, since I figured you never been there then I will explain it. It was either football or baseball season. All the fields were packed since it was a Saturday or Sunday I got hit. Easily a few thousand people. I hope this helps.

Message: Okay here is what happened. I was 15 1/2 with a permit. I had a motorcycle (Yamaha 175 Enduro) I was riding around with just shorts on. No shoes, helmet or shirt I think. I was the Kellers house (Tina and Vickki). I was leaving their house on 135th which is right across from Dana and all the ball fields. It was a day where the fields were packed with people. A few thousand easy. I went out the driveway without looking and got hit by Marty Warner (76') in his 66' Mustang. Apparently (since I have amenisia and don't remember what happened) I saw the car and stood up and jumped. I ended up hitting the windshield with my head. The hood of the car hit my ankle and broke it. There was a dent in the gas tank where the hood pushed my ankle. From what people told me I was knocked out then came around when the cops and paramedics came. I apparently tried to run away or something people told me. I don't remember. I was in a coma for only a day or so. When I came around the first person I saw was Sean Carroll. The doctor came in and checked to see if I was paralyzed. She ran this spiked wheel up and down my leg and kept asking me if I could feel it. I said YES as blood was coming out of some of the holes. I had a really bad headache for a few days. I guess it was a concussion. Mrs Adkins my math teacher had all the students in her class sign this really big card she got for me. Everyone brought food. My friend Kurt told me I was throwing the fruit out the window to try to hit cars driving by. He then told me I didn't know, but their was a ledge and everything was being caught by it. Norm who was a equipment manager was there everyday and ate allot of the food. That is how it happened. Thanks and good day.

Message: Keith's story reminds me of that commercial where a doctor is giving directions to a guy to perform self-abdominal surgery over the phone in which the guy asks, "Shouldn't you be doing this?" He'll have to show us how he set his leg at the next cruise night.

Message: To Nancy, Wayne, Andre, and the rest of the Layral clan. My deepest condolences to you and your family on the loss of your Dad. I was one of those kids who was tutored under him. I remember the first time I tried out for the Hawthorne Swim Club, at around 9 or 10 years old. Gil said I couldn't join, because I did the back stroke wrong. I did kind of an inverted breast stroke. He showed me the right way to do it, and told me to come back next year and try again, which I did, and made the club. His coaching helped me in my stint on the HHS swim and water polo team. God Bless you all.

Message: John, I believe Keith's story about the 30 kids at the hospital when he broke his leg. After coming home from dinner one night Paul and I received a message from our son Steve that our first grandchild was about to be born at Torrance Memorial Hospital. When we got there we found a waiting room packed wall to wall full of kids being rather noisy talking and laughing. Some we knew and some we did not. Apparently Michelle Buguy Bierman had phoned a friend prior to leaving home. Word got around fast. A nurse came out and informed everybody that there would be no birth that night so we all left. When we got home we got a call for our son that our grandaughter had been born. The nurses later told us that is the ploy they use when too many kids come to visit.
