Message: John, I still think the Rosecrans picture is looking west. Check out the tall stack behind the tresle. That may be the sulfer plant at Rosecrans/Sepulveda or part of Standard Oil.
Hi Steve, Don't know how you can dispute the map and picture. If it were looking west, Rosecrans would bend to to right, but it bends to the left.

Message: The Wiseburn school name change was in 1948 when the other schools were built in the district. Up until then, Wiseburn was the only school in the Wiseburn district. The map John posted is interesting since the contour lines show where the Leuzinger house sat on top of the little hill at El Segundo and Aviation and also his barn was along side the house. The picture of the Rosecrans intersection looks about the same as it did when I went to school at Wiseburn. I don't remember any onions in Hollyglen and most years, beans were grown. Where the railroad tracks crossed Aviation blvd and during the war a chase scene from a Red Skelton movie was filmed but I don't recall the title.
Thanks Denny, interesting stuff. We're lucky to have our Haytown elders here that can verify or deny lots of this info. Do you remember what year Inglewood-Redondo was changed to Aviation?

Message: Great train overpass picture. Second only to Howard's picture of old Rosecrans with the trees west of Aviation. Paco, I think this picture is about 300 yards from some famous dirt clod fights we had at the beanfield at the end of our street. A small freeway is there now. Even then, Goodman was throwing smoke.

Message: I remember that train tressle. When I was in 5th grade me and some of my friends use to play chicken there. We would stand in the middle of the tressle until we could see the train coming then run to the opposite end. One day I tripped and my leg got caught and the train ran over it. My buddy Mike ran down to the street on Rosecrans to retrieve my leg then the ambulance rushed me to the hospital. Lucky for me I had a needle and thread and could stitch it back on before we got to the hospital. Like Benjamin Franklin always said a stitch in time saved mine. I awoke from a coma 8 hours later. There were so many people there to see me that they had to move me to the Forum. Wilt Chamberlain signed my cast-I also broke my arm. I did lose a baby toe too.
Keith, Not sure, but I think Billy is Sloey.

Message: Great stuff on the road to the beach! It seems to me that the trees made that blvd. Also seems to me there was a grizzly murder, body in a basket, found by a vendor that had a fruit stand or something of that nature to the north and west of the intersection, below the tracks, in the early 50's or late 40's? Jerry got any clues on that? And hey you guys and Jan Johnson (need your address on my e-mail) I got my CD problem solved. Jimmie is coming to town. Great stuff. Thanks. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU! Message: Bonnie - When the Hollyglen homes were built in '54, there were several oil wells at Glasgow and 139th. After they were capped some years later about 5 new houses were built on the site. You can pick them out due the change in style from the originals.

Message: From that old map it appears that "Wiseburn School" is located at the current site of William Henry Dana Junior High School, part of the Wiseburn School District. Offline, we've got a little email chat going with members of the '76/'77 Cougar basketball team (me, Nygaard, Turner, Zambrano & Feist). Now we need a few more members of that team to check in -- off the top of my head, Raulerson, Oliver, Agee, Galindo, Aguirre (last I heard, he was going by the name Rudy Runaway with the Wind). Who am I missing here?
I think Richard Henry Dana was at one time, Wiseburn School. I asked Mr. Plotkin once, how long RH Dana had been there and I believe he said 1898. Is that correct Mr. P?
Also, according to Jerry Miles, Aviation was not Redondo, but Inglewood-Redondo. It must have been clipped from that map. Thanks again, Jer'.

I plan to tap the HHS wood shop to help build benches for the "new" Senior Square that is going to rise like a phoenix from the ashes! Take care!

Actually the net searcher found it on the net. It was part of the Santa Fe route from Chicago to LA

Message: Wow, what a picture. JB, where do you get this stuff? What a difference to today's intersection. What's the deal with the "Grand Canyon Line" on the train trestle? Did we have a direct to GC train track?
I'm sure that track wasn't a direct route to the Grand Canyon. Don't know why it was called that. I got this picture and the map from, as usual, good old Jerry Miles HHS66. He can out-search anyone on the net Thanks Jerry....

Message: Aviation & Rosecrans, of course! I used to go crawdad fishing in a little creek on the left side of that train overpass. I think my mom found watercress growing there too. Looks like this is before the eucalyptus trees were planted down both sides of Rosecrans to the ocean. Here's two myths/legends I grew up hearing about Hollyglen...1. That the area used to be (way back) an Indian village site, lending itself to hauntings and 2. There were fields of green onions growing where the houses now stand. Does anyone know if there is any fact in either?
I would bet on the onions....

Message: Interesting note about the Rosecrans picture. Most of us "oldtimers" remember that Rosecrans was lined with Eucalyptus trees almost all the way to the beach. In the picture, you can't see a single treetop past the trestle...wonder when they planted them?????
I'm sure they were there, but not as tall as we remember them.

Message: JB, I wonder if the north/south road was called "Aviation Blvd" in the late 20s/early 30s? What was the status of LAX in those days? What's interesting (to me anyway) is that even when I was growing up in the area, there was not much west of Aviation -- either north or south of Rosecrans -- most of the development in that area took place in the 80s. (On a different subject, I seemed to recall reading somewhere that (1) Marilyn Monroe lived in Hawthorne before she became famous and (2) Jim Morrison was busted in Hawthorne once.
Hi Dan, It was called Redondo on a 20s map that I have. LAX or Mines Field doesn't show on this map. Marilyn went to grade school at Ballona Av (Washington) Elementary.

Oh yes they are. Just saw the "Frank Graves" wood shop about 2 months ago and it looks just about the same as it did when I was there. They also have Metal Shop although it might be called something else now. The old Auto Shop is no longer available.

Message: That sounds great about the trophies. Thank you very much to all for the time spent. I do have a question though and I am NOT trying to start anything. I know you mentioned the shop teacher at Banning being a friend and his classes putting forth the effort to build the cases, which is great, but did the shop class at HHS not want to help?

Message: A quick update on the refurbishment project of the trophies and trophy cases from Nyman Hall. Tracy Turner and I retrieved almost all trophies from the maintenance shed on campus. A few weeks ago a few of us met at my office in Torrance and Laura Geele Wang (76) and Don Ditomasso (75) tirelessly and meticuloulsy cleaned the trophies. I met with the high school shop teacher at Banning High today(an old friend) and he agreed to have his classes build us new cases to help save alot of money. These kids are talented as I had the opportunity to inspect their labors. The trophies will be back in cases and on display in due time!
Hi Clark, Sounds like you're on the move. Thanks to the Pilots' shop class for the help.

Message: Drive-In Movie Confessions....Twice I left the drive-in without removing the speaker from my window. Broke the driver-side windows in both my '48 Dodge (metal flake blue) pickup and my '59 (big rider) Impala. Very embarrasing....made a great impression on my dates! Luckily there was an auto glass place on the west side of Hawthorne Blvd. in Lawndale that was able to fix things good as new.

Message: Cougar Sighting if this counts!!!While still unpacking today following our recent move, I was connecting the TV which has more wires than JB has fans. As Jenny was wiping the snow off of Roxy's (Yellow Lab) feet. On comes Judge Judy presiding over a case where a man wants the wedding ring back from his "Cougarette" after only one year of marriage. (Darren in Flying Embers...pay attention. Rough times ahead for you in the sequel, Turning Up the Heat). Judge Judy ruled against the Blonde Beauty, forcing her to also return the engagement ring...right there in court. Coincidentally, "Todd" in my first novel once dated this little damsel...once. Top that one, Keithie! But don't get friskie...she's already re-married! Court adjourned.
Hey Jim, Good story, but not a Cougar sighting. Thanks....
