Message: Hi Nancy. My condolences go out to you and your family on the loss of your father. When I went to elementary school at Eucalyptus, during summer vacation I went to the HHS pool alot to swim. I remember you and your brothers as swim stars of the pool, as you would do swimming exhibitions during the swim breaks at the pool. You were fantastic swimmers. It's too bad our family moved away from Hawthorne, because my younger brother Ken was an awesome swimmer. At the High School we went to up in the Seattle area, Ken was just a Freshman but he was the fastest swimmer on varsity. The next year, our high school cut out the swimming program. He should have transferred to another high school that had swimming, but he didn't and ended up doing wrestling instead. It would have been great if we could have stayed in Hawthorne so he could have swum at HHS and on your fathers swim club. Once again, my condolences go out to you and your family.

Message: I spend 3 days a week in Hilo now. So I make that drive on the Hamakua Coast all the time. One of the most beautiful roads in the world going along the coast. Well I went to restaurant the other day on the way home in a town called Lapauhoehoe. It is called The 50's Style Restaurant. The place is awesome. It is just an old house turned into a restaurant that serves everything they had back in the 50's. The decorations are great, old style diner type. Anyway I was talking to the owners daughter and told her how much I liked the old stuff and she asked where I was from. I told her Hawthorne, and I went to HHS where the Beach Boys went. She got all excited since they were her favorite band. She told me she has been to Hawthorne before when she visited LA. And said she took a picture of HHS because of the Beach Boy connection. It was about 10 years ago she said. I told her I'd come back and maybe she can find the pic. Kind of neat being in such a little town and someone who has been to Hawthorne. ANyway, great food if you are ever there. Also, someone mentioned the candy, Flicks. I liked them sometimes. I just thought they tasted different from regular chocolate. Did they do something to them to make them different. I haven't seen them in 30 years. And I don't think we have anymore drive-ins working here. They did just open a IHOP here though on Maui or Oahu.
I thought Flicks were the worst taking waxy chocolate I ever ate, but as a kid, I kept buying them. Thanks Keith for the story.

Message: I've noticed several writings about Gilbert Layral, my father, Founder and Coach of the Hawthorne Swim Club 1958-1983. He died February 11, 2007 at Torrance Memorial Hospital at 77. He lead a very productive and interesting life. He LOVED all his swimmers and remembered them fondly with every conversation about the good ol' days. His children, myself; Andre'; Wayne; Lisa; Lance; Lynn; 12 grand children and 8 great grandchildren survive him. We will miss him a LOT. At his request, we had no funeral but a celebration of his life at Wilson Park in Torrance, CA on March 3rd, 2007 with picnic lunches and fond memories. Thanks to those of you who remembered him.
Hi Nancy, Our condolences to your family. I didn't know your father, but sure he has many acquaintances here in Cougartown. Thanks for letting us know.

Message: Keith Jones ask on Feb 21, '07 at 9:56 p.m. "Are there any Drive-In theaters in L.A. still?" Answer; Yes. The Mission Tiki Drive-In Theater, 10789 Ramona Ave, Montclair is still in business. The place has four screens (a multiplex?) so, the showgoers can choose from four movie choices. A drawback; the place is just south of an active railroad track. Sometimes the sound of the trains is louder than the soundtrack of the movie (some people like to sit out- side their cars and find out). A high-tech thing; one can hear the show sound through their car radio on the FM band.

Message: This is for Donald Yarbrough (and John Baker). Donald posted his message Feb 22, '07 at 11:35 a.m. Ah humm, John "Break a Leg" would be the correct response. I know you meant well and coulda been a little fatigued but Bro Yar-brough has done very well with his craft and as I learned from a talk show host on the radio; 'break a leg' is what actors prefer to hear before going on stage. Somehow, the phrase 'good luck' actually means 'bad luck' to actors. It's one of those mysteries from the long ago past.
Thanks Jim, for setting me straight. I'll fix that when I get a chance.

Message: John, I got excited when I saw the picture of St. Joe's and the year, thinking I could finally jump in here with an answer, as my oldest brother Mike would of been in that class. But I don't see his picture. When I went there we had 2 class rooms for each grade, so maybe he was in the other classroom? He went on to Serra, rather than HHS. If anyone remembers Mike Wiltse and wants an update on him email me. I'll email him to look at the picture to see if he recognizes anyone.
On another note, some months ago I received an email from someone (Not sure if he's an HHS grad) who used to live on our block on Gale Ave, looking for my 2nd oldest brother Richard. He found me thru Cougartown and I was able to put them in touch with each other! This is a great site - thanks to you John. Cheers, Annette
Hi Annette, Ahh thanks for the kind remarks and we do try to keep all us Hawthorne people together, be it HHS, Leuzinger, Serra or any South Bay school. We all grew up in the same pasture

Message: I lived in Lennox in the 40's. My sister and I went to the Lennox theater regularly. We were probably 7 and 9 years old and walked from about Inglewood Ave. and Lennox Blvd. Can you imagine letting two little girls that young walk that far and go to the movies alone today? Yes it was kind of grundgy then. My parents bought us matresses from the old theater after we moved to Imperial Hwy. They were junk and didn't last long. It burned down later. We spent many a Saturday at the Inglewood theater watching westerns. Milk Duds were my candy of choice.
Milk Duds are FABULOUS today. Thanks Marilyn...

Message: CHEESE! Gone a coupla' days and ya' miss out on a bunch! I didn't even get to SEE the picture of the theater everyone named incorrectly, not that I would have named it, but all of a sudden, CT came to life and took off with a simple "name the theater" question. Like the good old days, huh John? Talking about REAL Hawthorne stuff. I like it, I like it! More pictures and questions, please!!!!
Well Doris, we decided to wait until you left town, THEN we'd do the Theatre questions. We'll figure something out for next week, but for now, it's name the 65ers.

Message: Hey Ol' Timers, Anyone remember the Lennox Theater? I saw Bedtime for Bonzo there. They had special contest nights. Our babysitter took us there quite frequently. It was a ratty place even in the late forties. Nevertheless, I'm pretty sure it existed. We're looking forward to a huge Easter celebration here. Wishing all you Cougars a happy Easter, too. Jim Peppers
Hey Jim, I remember the Lennox. I think it turned into a mattress outlet. Thanks for checking in, and a Happy Easter to you and your family.

Knows that movie stuff. Real buttered popcorn, a Flicks, a red Charms sucker, set for a double feature then a douple scoop cone at Savon drugs after, stop by the newsstand and talk to Bosco the paper seller, then grab the bus back to Hawthorne. All for a buck 25.

Message: I'm one of those Leuzinger Olympians that just loves CougarTown. What a great site this is, and I am addicted. I read it so often that I'm starting to feel like I know some of the regulars on here...and I do recognize some from Hawthorne Intermediate days back when. I do have 2 other reasons for posting today. The first is to wish my best friend Karen Kuehl HHS 1959, a very Happy Birthday today....and my second reason is to apologize to Keith Jones. Even tho' we don't know each other Keith, and you probably won't even remember this, but I posted one time to you and I felt bad afterward because I wasn't very nice to you. I want to say I'm very sorry, and I hope you'll forgive me. And to you JB...you have done such a great thing for HHS by creating this website, and I appreciate so much you allowing us LHS Olympians to sneak in the back door and enjoy it with all of you.
Hi Joanie, Well thank you for all the nice thoughts and yes, Olympians are welcomed here, as well as the rest of the South Bay. In fact I met Karen Graham Kuehl on this very website and we've been buddies ever since. Happy Birthday Karen. Come on back anytime you want, Joanie, and thanks again.
