Message: Great picture. Can anyone mistake those Daquila eyes, bottom row, second from the right. Sandy Daquila was and is a great HHS story with her husband Gary Dunn, class of 1963. She survived eggings, big brother's, bad friends, car crashes, bad dates and other things to become a wonderful lady living in the OC hills with her family.

Message: Today, February 22, is the 48th anniversary of the darkest day in the history of the Plaza Theater (aka the "El Cheapo"). On Feb. 22,1959, some youthful miscreant, reportedly a freshman at HHS, threw a knife through the screen. This act caused the manager to get up on stage and give a speech bemoaning the fact that how could anyone perform such a base and vile act, especially given that "this theater has been serving the community and the children of this community for 45 years." An article appeared in the Hawthorne Press stating that the offender, when asked why he threw the knife said that he did it just to see if he could get away with it. Today is also Washington's Birthday.

Message: I noticed on hhscougars.org that Hawthorne High is having an American Cancer Society Relay for Life on the 24th and 25th of March. Like everything involving the ACS it is trying to raise funds to fight cancer. The Relay is a team event that lasts 24 hours. The object is to form a team of 18-24 people, have at least one member of your team on the track for the 24 hours-and did I mention, raise money. It?s fun. You can spend the nite, and camp-out on the HHS track. This is only the second year that HHS is putting on the Relay. Most of the teams they have so far are from the clubs on campus. It would be cool if Cougartown could form a team. If time is too short to form a team, you can purchase a luminaria in honor/in memory of someone who lost the fight, someone who is still fighting, or hopefully, someone who won the fight against cancer. Maybe John can set-up some links.

Message: Ok. I see...I got the theater right...just the location wrong oh duh! The Fox theater was home away from home for me. My dad worked there for over 30 years as a janitor. I learned to pick up popcorn boxes before I learned how to walk!! Does anyone remember going to the "kiddy shows" they had there? They had them during the summer so kids would have someplace to go. Always a cartoon, newsreel, and 2 movies!! It was great. I can't imagine sitting through all of that now!

Message: Larry Bach! Congratulations on your retirement!!! I got to see Dale Martin last week at Jimmy Doersam's funeral and he looks better than ever! You had a great role model in our "Uncle Dale. "Gorospe, Fraser, Stark, Jimmy Doersam Jr and the rest of the HHS F.D. are all hangin'tough. But that Bruce Bradford STILL looks like he just stepped off of a movie set! What does that guy do? It was great to reacquaint with everyone from so long ago and the good time was rightfully enjoyed while honoring a truly wonderful man. Thanks again for your touching tribute to Gano Veach in my book. Enjoy your retirement and welcome to officially being "old!" Sincerely, Jim
PS Do Fraser and I still have to call ya "Chief?" Steve, did I spell anything rong? If so, I'll get Keith to proof reed for me.

Message: Congratulations to Larry Bach on his retirement. I have to wait another 12 years. On the Academy Theater, I couldn't see the picture but based on the descriptions, I suspected that was the correct answer. The Academy Theater played host to a sneak preview of the comedy classic, "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein" in 1948.

Message: Wrong Keith, The Loyola never had a crying room The only crying room's I remember were at the Paradise (down the street) and the Imperial. The wife and I use to go into the crying room at the Imperial to get away from the noise outside of the room. One night in 1955 my folk's dropped me off at the Loyola (on the way to a meeting) and left me there to go in and see There's No Business Like Show Business and Bowery To Bagdad (a Bowery Boys Movie) When I got to the Box office they were not going to let me in because I was not with an adult (Age 14)I had to beg Please let me in I have no way to get home until my folk's pick me up after the show. Thankfuly they let me in. It would have been a hell of a walk back to 119th and Felton. Yes Hawthorne did have a theater The Plaza (check out past Feedbacks & Video's Hawthorne at the Movies)Bruce
