Message: Talking about Little League, my brother Mark Nielsen played on the Braves. He was also on the allstar team with Gary Allenson and Mike Colburn. I think Les Jones was on the team. I still remember the snack bar, my mom used to work it and once she gave a hamburger out without the meat. She was too busy watching my brother get a hit I think. Vicki

Message: We know that Mr. Echemandu went to Hawthorne and now know that he was called Joe, But looking through Eric's El Molino's, I found him in the Football line up page of the 1999 book, under the name of Joe, I never saw his name in in any of the other books. This might of been his last year at HHS. There also is this other player by the name of Kingsley Echema, I know it's not the full spelling of Joe's,(could of shorten his last name) but could they be related They sure look very much alike, and he too held his own on the field.

Message: Man I love talking about the Wiseburn Little League. SO much talent came out of there. I can't imagine too many other little league area that had more talent anywhere in the country. Yet we never won Williamsport. We kicked ass in the Middle League World Series though both years I was on it. The last year they had Middle League was mine and Mr. Duvall was the league President. I remember I hit a home run and the ball went and broke the windshield of his car. I was so afraid I was going to get in trouble. He came up to me and said he didn't care just win the championship. And we did. He also worked at Chevron when I was there and was head fire marshall I think. Really nice guy. That little league brings back some of the best memories ever. The chili was the best too. I remember the best job for a kid was setting up the field. The Stone family did it allot. I would help just so I could get a dollar or two. Setting up the fence, chalking the lines it was all fun.

Message: In response to John Rout's post, Echemandu played at HHS and was a very good high school back. I had hoped he would go to Nebraska but he chose Cal. As to his name change, he was called Joe by his teammates because of the difficulty in saying his name. That was the extent of his name change. Otherwise he has always been Adimchinobe Echemandu or something like that.

I saw him play a game on tv while at Cal and the announcers mentioned that he graduated from HHS, but went to high school under another name. It appears he changed his name to what it is now while attending Cal. Makes it a little more difficult to figure out who he was while at HHS.

Message: O.K. I admit it, the HHS varsity football team this year is pathetic! 70-0 against morningside last night was embarassing! I think we could have put in Wade Greasby even at his advanced age and he could have got us one td! Where are Terry Howse, Skulik and McCallister when we need them!! Hawthorne High games are not the place to have Cougar sitings these days. It seems West Torrance games are where all the past Cougars are! I've watched a couple West games this year with Mike Crnkovich(hhs 75). I've also seen Dennis Gonsalves(hhs 75) at multiple games and recently I spotted John Lydon (hhs 76) and Sheri Salazar Lydon (hhs 77 or 78 ) at a game. Let's all pray for a Cougar victory this year!

Message: Ok so I'll try to make this short, ya right! I remember being on the Phillys team about 1968 and I was sort of small, well a runt you might say, well I had the best RBI average in the league but I never took a swing at a ball, I had such a small strike zone nobody could throw me a strike, So all my coaches told me just stand there and let them walk me. Well I started to grow bigger and found a pitcher that was right on it, so he threw strike one! and I tryed to get smaller Then strike two and I shrunk till my elbows almost touched my knees! The ump called time out! and said "Boy what are you doin?" I told him "Im tryin to get walked!!" he asked me why dont you try to hit the ball? and I told him nobody ever showed me how to hit the ball,, so he stopped the game and called my coach out and told him to teach me how to hit the ball right then and there. When the game resumed I was two strikes down and crack! I got a hit!!! Darned short stop caught it tho,, dont that just bite it??

Message: Tom Chadwick, you jogged a memory with the mention of Mr. Mack and Walt Duvall. Mr. Mack was the Tony LaRussa of Hawthorne National Middle and Little Leagues. I think he had more baseball smarts than any coach I played for in youth baseball. And Walt Duvall, not to mention the kids Jon and David, were the best kids bar none I met. Old Walt, along with Warren Scott, taught kids manners the old fashion way--- you step out of line and you face the old man's wrath. That greatest generation knew a thing or two about raising kids. BTW Tom, speaking of memory jogging, I still have traumatic brain damage from your home plate hit in a middle league game. You had a full head of steam coming to the plate and pulled a Pete Rose-Ray Fosse on me which brought the stars out in the day time. I luckily held onto the ball for the final out. Those were the days my friends, we thought they'd never end!

Message: Tom, yes I remember Mr. Mack too, also as a teacher at Dana. I really liked Mr. Mack. I think my dad (Casey) was our coach one year. I then went to the majors and played for the Red Sox and Mr. Colbern was our coach. Every team I played for either took 1st or 2nd place. Mostly 1st. I remember the Blue Jays were our main competitor when I was on the Phillies and the Vikings when I was with the Red Sox. I can't remember who is was in Middle League. I remember and liked your dad too. And your little brother, John. Pat Mack was our me coach in Middle League with brother Terry, Ric Carden and Ron Treat. Great guys. I remember getting free stuff for getting the foul balls during little league games. I could actually remember fitting in the storm drain and getting balls that rolled in.

Message: Oh yeah....I remember Mrs. Holly..I had her the year before you did and that was the only time I got in trouble with a teacher. She brought the brains just as described but when she offered them to me I told her she was crazy. Not very respectful I admit but I have to admire her tenacity in trying to convert middle school kids. She also had us selling oranges and apples during the nutrition break to try and lure kids away from the machines. I preferred my math teacher, Mr. Clayton, the rough and tumble ex-marine with diabetes and lots of candy bars on his desk. Him, I could relate to...LOL

Message: Somebody mentioned cooking brains!!! Does anybody remember Mrs. Holly? She was my 7th grade teacher at Hawthorne Intermediate. Right before 6th grade let out for the summer, there was a rumor that went around at Eucalyptus School about a teacher at Haw. Inter. who cooked cow brains in class and she would have the students eat them. Many of us thought it was disgusting and we dismissed it as untrue. Well, I'm here to tell you, Mrs. Holly did bring cow brains to school and she did cook them in class. She passed it around for the students to taste, but there was no takers. To show us that it was edible, she ate them herself. Besides the cow brains, she brought all sorts of sprouts, dried fruit and nuts mix (pre trail mix days) and many other "health food" stuff. I guess she was ahead of times. The one other thing that I remember about Mrs. Holly were the cars that she drove. She drove these 2 very old rust buckets (I'm sure they would fetch a hefty price now). If I'm not mistaken they were Chevys 50's model, maybe even older. Does anyone remember Mrs. Holly, the cow brains and her cars? She was quircky, but I still think of her fondly.

I still remember my first hit ever, a bunt, I was in such awe that they had to tell me to run. I think the coach that inpired me the most in little league, pop warner, and middle league, besides my dad, would be coach Walt Duvall...great guy.

Message: Having a yearbook made into a CD or DVD sounds like a pricey proposition. Then, after you've gottn a DVD made, some players are fussy about playing them. I have a Toshiba region-free DVD player that seems to like DVD+Rs but refuses to play DVD-Rs. Then I have an older RCA DVD player (on permanent loan to my Mom) that is less fussy, but occasionally will refuse some DVD-Rs.

Guess you'd have to find someone who still has the year you are looking for but it might be worth the effort. I still look at mine, and used it extensively while organizing our reunion this year.
