Message: Hey John, Just a quick note/ski weather report. at the house we measured 2 feet of snow, spent most of thursday digging out, and the resorts got hammered. Now, does anyone remember the Pancake breakfest at the old BOYS market? Pop Warner football teams sold tickets, the tickets looked like pancakes, and the Hawthorne Kiwanis Club would cook those big cakes with eggs and sausages? For $1.00 you could eat all you wanted. can't get that at the I-Hop. And yeppers, I got the 30th reunion CD, Great Job!! Can't wait for the next party! Sorry to hear about those Forest Service firefighters, the whole Fire service lost 4 good men. Their families are in our prayers. Kirk
Hey Kirk, I remember the Boys Market Pancake Breakfasts. Not bad for a buck...Thanks for the memory flogger

Message: Man I remember going to Brooks Hardware with my dad. They sponsored our little league team (the Phillies). My dad would always go there and get stuff usually on Saturday or Sunday and always talk to Mr. Brooks. DO I remember right, did they live upstairs or something.
Their house was behind the Hardware store. First place I played spin the bottle.

Message: Speaking of trailer Parks and pancakes, there was A trailer park on the southside of Imperial Hwy east of Prairie Ave. That had the biggest train layout I have ever seen, Donna Geddes lived there, The trailer park is still there I think, but no more train. And if you like pancakes try Dupars, At one time there was a Dupars at Imp & Crenshaw. Now I am getting hungry for breakfast, I always said if I ever found A woman to cook brains and eggs for me I would Marry her. Never found one tho
Hey Gary, Don't remember that train layout, but thanks for the memory anyway.

Message: For Kevin Clark, and anyone else interested, we have a small number of the reunion DVD/CD available for purchase. The price is $15 for both of them. The DVD by John Achrem is different from the reunion DVD, and you will need to contact John about that. If you want the DVD/CD of the actual reunion at the Ayres Hotel on August 19, please email me directly. I'm SO PLEASED to hear the good reports about the DVD. I am SO IMPRESSED with the work done by our videographer. The filming and editing is excellent! Anyone needing a videographer, contact me and I will gladly give a recommendation.

Message: There has been some talk about the "Jim Thompson" on Inglewood Ave. My parents owned Brooks Paint & Hardware and were good friends with Jim Thompson who owned the Mobil Station next door. I know he did NOT live in the trailer park, but in a house near Oceangate Ave and about 134th. I visited he and his wife, LaVerne, many times with my parents. I remember getting lots of those "Flying A" bottles of hand lotion they gave out.
Ah yes, finally, my favorite 6th grade girlfriend for about a week finally shows up in Cougartown. Thanks Nancy "Cheryl" for adding to our friendly Cougar forum. I too remember Thompson's Mobil AND Brooks Paint and Hardware as both were staples of our community in the early 60s. Come on back anytime, Nanc'....

Message: My eyes popped out when I saw Pat's entry regarding the trailer park. In 1955 my sister moved into the trailer park less than a half block East of Inglewood Avenue, on El Segundo. In 1956 she met and married Jim (Buster) Thompson who lived in the mentioned trailer court on Inglewood Avenue, just North of El Segundo. His dad was also Jim Thompson, but neither of them owned a Mobil station. I left working with Don Scheliga 2 weeks ago, so will try to get an answer on the trailer court the family owned. I'm sorry now it never came up in conversation.

Message: There has been a lot of trailer park talk recently and the trailer park on Inglewood Ave is where Jim Thompson Lived. Jim Thompson owned Thompson Mobil, next to Brook's Hardware. There was also another trailer park on El Segundo Blvd, just behind the Texaco Station. Kathy Downer is correct; they did tear this one down and replaced it with a Taco Bell. I worked at both of these service stations. Remember when you could get your oil and tires checked and water put into your radiator for free?

Message: John- There was a trailer Park close to HHS. It was torn down and a Taco Bell with a big outdoor fire pit built in it's place. There was a bad fire at the trailer park when I was a kid. Maybe that is the one people are thinking of. Keep up the good work.
Also, would like to send Neil Larson an e-mail, but his address must be incorrect. Thanks.
Hi Kathy, Could be, we'll see, and Neil, please fix your email address so Kathy can email you.

Message: Hey John, Larry saw something of interest, you know how he is into his Cars and Football. Well, in Sundays paper there was a piece on the Raiders activating a former "HAWTHORNE HIGH STAR". A running back by the name of ADIMCHINOBE ECHEMANDU. Whew! what a long name......Have no idea what year this young man played for Hawthorne. Guess Mr. Echemandu is insurance if LaMont Jordan or Justin Fargas can't place, then he gets to play. This should be interesting, last time Hawthorne had a football star play professional, was Curtis Conway (1989), he was around for about 10 years. Need to keep watching to see if Mr. Echemandu will get his chance to play in the future. Hope so. Does anyone know when this young man played for Hawthorne.
Hi Loretta, as I recall, Echemandu played for the Cal Bears and graduated about 2003 or 04. I would think he was an HHS grad about the same year as your son, Eric Cuiper HHS2000, so I would ask Eric. Echemandu was on the Cal team that was the last Pac 10 team to beat USC.

I love my girls from high school. I know I missed a great time. It's amazing when I sit back and think about just how much fun I had back at HHS. My buddy David Kaintz looks so official now. Very astute. I can't wait to see the pics

I know you did something that made them cry. Just teasing you sir and trying to draw you out with a reply. I've hadn't seen you here lately and missed your witty prose.

Message: To my good friends Litton and Miles thanks for thinking of me. As to the lady in black, my color was always red so that wasn't me. As far as the girl crying in the bathroom, I never got close enough to girls to talk to them let alone to make them cry. Or were you saying Miles, I am a sissy. That could be true. Bike riding, Baker? Did we do bike riding? All I remember is pancakes, and that waiter asking how we ever got into those lycra shorts. Syrup please.
Lycra??!! I always wore gingham.

Message: Hey, John Boy; I just saw the movie "Flags Of Our Fathers" and it brought back something to mind. I remember reading and/or being told years ago, that Ira Hayes, the American Indian, and one of the Iwo Jima Flag raiser died drunk and face down in a mud puddle in a trailer park on Inglewood Avenue in Hawthorne. I do remember as a kid, many, many years ago there was an old trailer park on Inglewood Avenue, I believe south of El Segundo Blvd. Do any of you old historians know if this myth is true or not?. I looked it up on the internet and it says he died on the reservation, he was drunk and died of exposure after passing out.
Hey George, I don't think so but HHS62 Don Scheliga's family owned that trailer park, and he checks in once in a while. Maybe he knows.

Here is what is listed for Hawthorne High (Sorry Billy you are not listed)"Hawthorne - Hawthorne High school - In Nyman Hall you sometimes see an old woman in black wandering around there. And also lights go off an on mysteriously. In the girls bathroom by building seventeen you can hear the sounds of a girl weeping. In the same bathroom the toilets flush and the water turns on and off."http://theshadowlands.net/places/california1.htm
Hey Chris, This one is already on pages 661 and 832.......what the heck, it's almost Halloween.
