Message: Mr. Bennett or Kermit, what a memory of classroom mayhem. I worked like the dickens on a lovely ashtray (nobody in my family smoked) only to have Bill Lee smash it on the "power peener." Poor Mr. B was the brunt of much mischief -- to which he seemed oblivious. We added Elgin Baylor to his roll sheet, and answered "here" when the name was called. He never questioned that. The furnace was a great place to keep stuff. Mr B would light the furnace and blow off his eyebrows with great regularity. Some other guys (never me) would throw dirt clods from the foundry in the back to the tool crib in the front of the room. Crouch down and smoke behind the rollers in the back of the room. Not too many "college prep types" in the industrial arts building, but many great personalities with a keen sense of mischief. He had a limp and a lisp and he never missed school. I hope he enjoyed his retirement.
One day someone threw a handful of 22 shorts in the furnace. That got EVERYONE'S attention.

Message: After all these years I can still hear Mr. "B" in my mind..........Pine is the "cadalack" of wood. And of course I made a shoe shine box in his class and I slapped it together because it was getting close to the end of the semester. And Mr. "B" cocked his head to the side and proclaimed, son this project is a hunk of junk! And I won't repeat the stories my ex-brother in law told me about the darts and Mr. "B". Everyone have a nice weekend.
Funny, I've always thought of pine as the Corvair of wood.

Message: I hadn't noticed the reference of Mr Bennett previously, not sure I spelled his name right, but he was an unusal character. He was an individual that had the tendency to spew moisture when he talked. In Metal shop he had his rules. But when approached and you were talking to him , you would be showered with moisture when he answered. In other words, he would spit when talked to. We had this young man named Joey Mc, I guess thats enough of his name, that got caught cooking hot dogs, classic, in an oven hot enough to melt metal. Mr. B approached him and asked what he was doing. Joey turned around, put a paper towel in front of his face, so he wouldn't get showered and said " nothing". Guess what? He was "outta there"!! And to add to the misery of the Teach, if you wet a paper towel and hunked it at one of those overhead lights that lit the shop ... they would sometimes...blow ...explode. I guess all kids aren't bad, but can be bad at times. At least we weren't doing some of the things kids are doing now. We thought it was harmless fun. Maybe it wasn't? MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU! Jake N Jude.
Most kids in his class called Mr. Bennett, irreverently, "The Spittin' Spastic".... Just Cougartown, Mr. B and because Jake wouldn't say it. We still love you Mr. Bennett and thanks Jake. May the Coug be with you, and Judi too. "

There should be more that are proud of their teachers, their experiences and at least a little bit of fun you had when you were in school. It won't get any easier. But you have some great memories. Message: Hello everyone! I had probably some of the best years there, I was in Drama and Dance and enjoyed it every bit. My high school sweetheart was Ryan Scott Philips we shared many wonderful memories. Especially in Nyman hall that was like a second home to me, I will never forget Mr. Wayne our Drama teacher he really took the time to care for us and for that I will never forget. He also had my sisters in his class Virgie and Letty but they are older than me. To all my friends you remember who you are thank you for years of great memories I will never forget. Cougars rock!!!!!
Hi Sabrina, Thanks for letting all your friends know you're out there and check back in with memories of good ol' HHS anytime, and yes, Cougars DO Rock!!!

Message: Phil Mungarro -concerning Mr. Bennett- OR MISTER ?B?- He did have several colorful expressions. I am attempting to recall his ?accent?, where he came from? His particular accent added to his rather alien or foreign personality. Some of his other catch phrases were?? First you get ya a piece of ALDER. (Pronounced -ALDA).??You?ll find that in the Auxiliary area (pronounced AUX- ILL-ER-AIRieY AREA.???WHEN ya? done, brush a coat of Deft on it & let it dry, over in the AUX Ill-er-aireiy area.? And what about those funky glue encrusted brush bottles with the brush poked through the lid of the jar like some sort of middle age cup hilt sword ? I almost want to say Mister B was from Vermont V?MauNt, since he seldom pronounced his R?s. He sort of had a semi ?Bastun? accent now that I think of it!
In 1962 Mr. Bennett was the metal shop teacher. Is it the same Mr. B?

I went "steady" with Chris when I was a junior and she was a freshman. I was overwhelmed when I saw her name listed. If any of you know what happened to her, would you please e-mail me. No need to post here on CT. Thanks

I was fortunate when I lived in Hilo, we only had a few 3.0ish quakes. Enough to get our attention. I am happy to hear our Cougar family members who live in and around Kona are safe.

Message: I need some help.....(okay, don't even go there!) No, really! I was browsing through the alumni list. Scrolling through the list of names of the class of '68 when I came upon a name of a long lost girlfriend of mine I have been looking for. Teri (Prowense) Nelson. Don't quite know why she was listed under the class of'68 when she clearly graduated with the class of '69 (she's in our yearbook). Anyway, I e-mailed her, but to my dissappointment the e-mail came back as undeliverable. So Teri, if you happen to see this.....please e-mail me or if any of you other Cougars happen to know how to get in touch with her.....it would be very much appreciated. Thanks.....P.S. Happy Birthday SUE!
Hi Anita, that happens allot. Again, to all Cougs, please update your email addresses. It makes it real simple if you do. Good Luck....

Message: The quake did more damage than thought on the surface. It appears one ofour major seaports maybe damaged beyond repair and may have to be rebuilt. The Kawaihae Harbor. I gues the supports underneath moved and caused huge cracks above, so for now all shipments to the Big Island are going to Hilo then trucked here. So that will increaeprice more. A 150 year old church in Hawi collapse (most of it). A hunk of road 10' wide and 30' long collapse on the Hamakua Coast. It is only a two lane highway. A couple of the hotels had some pretty bad stuff happen. but no one got hurt so that was good. Had so really bad rain and thunder last night that flooded some stuff. SO Hawaii right now is not allot of fun. Gotta go now, we are going to the beach.

Message: Glad to see your alright Keith...It is kinda too bad the quake didn't happen on the otherside of the Island tho so we could catch some of the waves here. I remember when a quake happened in Hawaii, back in the early 60's, sent 25'+ surf to the Southbay area. I spent a day watching Greg Noll, Dewey Weber, Hap Jacobs, Bing Copeland and some others I don't remember attacking that surf off the Redondo breakwater. That was really impressive watching them take on that surf. Of course at the time I was too young and too chicken to even attempt it. Surf Report: Ok all you Cougar Surf Dudes in Socal dust off them boards, looks like were in for a stellar weekend of surf in the 5-8'+ range starting with some smaller but fun size tomorrow 3-4' increasing from the SW through the weekend into early next week. I have been checking out the ISA World Championships being held this week at the HB pier. Young top surfers representing teams from 27 countries, even Switzerland has a team(their kind of like the Jamaican bobsled team...just kidding). This is the surf worlds Olympics. They haven't had much in the way of surf so far this week but would be worth watching them tear it up in the surf this weekend especially with the swell coming in. This event is held every 2 years in different places around the world. These kids are fun to watch so if your around HB this weekend check it out or you can watch it live at www.surfingamerica.org/webcast.asp

Message: Speaking of BIG quakes, I was in my dorm room @ Cal State, Northridge when the 1st big one hit in the SF Valley (Sylmar quake, '71). My bed ended up on the opposite side of the room. Pieces of sheetrock pelted me from the ceiling. Books, TV, & assorted junk were tossed onto the floor. Whatta mess! Whatta ride! Whatta quake! -Gibby-
