Message: Paco, really enjoyed your pictures. The Rosecrans looking west is a classic and should be on some book cover. The Hermosa Biltmore was neat because Derek" YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN HERE YESTERDAY" Harrison lived behind the hotel. Surfed out front with the Costa guys many times. Anyone remember Robby Stitum from Costa; it was his picture that hung over the salad bar at the Chart House for years. Derek started at HHS in 1959 and finished at Mira Costa in 1963. Thanks for the pictures.

Message: John I see that there hasn?t been muck activity on the feedback pages, so I decided to just post memories of good old Hawthorne and I hope you don?t mind. The golden gateway to Hawthorne was the ever-famous sign that let you know you were entering Hawthorne in the early 60?s. When I was traveling north on Hawthorne blvd and sitting at the light across from the lighthouse drive-in I knew I was just entering into the famous city of Hawthorne, California. Think about it, the most famous hot spots of that era were in Hawthorne. The Lighthouse, the A&W, Fosters, Taco Tio, Skippy?s/biggies, Ryan?s, the Plaza theater and these were in Hawthorne, California. So much fame in 5.3 sq miles of land. I love it!

Message: Thank you John for allowing me to use this wonderful site for info about our little home in Yucca Valley. The info that I've received from you guys has been the best we've gotten. The maps have really been helpful and it looks like we're safe for now. Our place is about a mile on the east side of Hwy 62 (between Morongo and Yucca Valley). Any updates to me personally would be most welcome. God bless Cougartown. How many of you changed your grades on those little yellow report cards that we were supposed to take home to mom and dad? Did the color of your ink give you away? What year did HHS quit using those? Remember? The white ones went to your last period teacher and the yellow ones went home.

Message: Thank you Sharon for your kind words, I was very touched. That was definitely an evening to remember. Committee members Janet Williams, Jeff Nathanson, Gene Skulick, Cheryl Crownover, Teri Dowell, Mike Lewis, Carol Bernal, Sharrie Gibson, Dori Gestone and Debbie Auger put hours of blood, sweat & tears into that 1930?s theme homecoming event. When it poured rain that night, I was most concerned about the antique model cars, but their owners were gracious and everyone kept their sense of humor throughout. Some of the best memories I have from high school were a result of participating on Student Council with Bill Fetherston at the helm. Sharon, please email me Bill?s contact information, so I can thank him for his dedication. I just read that there?s a new biography out, Catch a Wave, the Rise, Fall & Redemption of Beach Boys? Brian Wilson by Peter Carlin. People Magazine gave it 4 stars. The author interviewed the surviving Beach Boys, including Brian and had access to hours of unreleased recordings. Thanks again Sharon and if you're ever up in Santa Cruz, give me a holler!

We had a long talk about Hawthorne in the old days like the Plaza theatre and the Hawthorne parade and fair. It's always fun to bump into someone and find that you shared the same hometown back in the day!

Message: Thanks George, I will look it up. Living in Tucson is wonderful until I hear bits and pieces about what's happening back home in SoCal. We have a cabin in Yucca Valley and haven't been able to get a clear enough map to see exactly where the fire is located. I did access the L.A. Times and a few local TV stations but was unable to view a map. I couldn't find one on the Internet either. Our cabin is located about one mile south of the 62 frwy about 20 miles east of the 10. The turn off on the 62 is just west of Palm Springs. Can anyone help with details?

Message: Hi All; Sorry I haven't written lately. Hey John, Barbara took me to Tony's on the Pier for my birthday dinner and it's as good as ever. What a great trip down memory lane. I saw the very place on the King Harbor break wall where a huge wave of about 20 feet in height caught a group of rather stupid crab fishermen off guard and washed one of them dangerously close to some very nasty rocks that could have killed him. Glad you didn't get hurt buddy.
Hey Ricki V.F. Talk about monsoons, I was driving through Green Valley AZ. When one of these things hit and the rain was so hard and fast that we all pulled over to wait until we could see. I've never seen rain like that before or since. As far as Patrice Lumumba is concerned I'm pretty sure she took me to the backwards dance in 1960. The next cruise night is getting closer all the time.
Love you guys, M.S.

Message: Adrianne DeAlejandro- RE Beach Boys ...Mike Love comment---I saw the same clip on TV- We all like to have such wonderful memories of that era - In a way I admire Brian for his forward resolve in focusing on tomorrow & not dwelling on the past. I certainly hope Mike was not inferring that all the Booze & Drugs was due to Brian...--- May I suggest everyone read a copy of Brian Wilson's autobiography, -Wouldn't It Be Nice- For a very clear understanding of what was going on among the "BOYS". Brian if your out there ...We all Love you Man!

Message: I told this story to Bill and he encouraged me (still encouraging me!) to share: In 1972 I was a freshman. Kim Stembler who lived up the street from me was a senior, very popular and much admired. She was the Chairman of the Homecoming Committee that year. She had planned and arranged the halftime program at the football game: old T type cars carried the Princesses and Victory Queen around the track to the front of the stands. Wouldn't you know it, it rained... in the far north corner of the stadium, a car got stuck in the mud, or wouldn't start, or something. I remember Kim holding a jacket or umbrella over her head, gracefully gliding across the muddy, puddled field, to handle the emergency. I was so impressed with that lady's confidence and grace, that 2 years later, with that evening clearly in mind, I volunteered to chair the halftime program my junior year. Kim was the reason- I wanted to emulate her style, skill and confidence. Thanks, Kim, for being a great role.

Message: Just spoke with Bill Fetherston, the Student Council advisor at HHS during my tenure. Bill is such a great guy, and he was a wonderful guide for us. Always encouraged us to follow our dreams and aim high; if we got off track he'd gently bring us back to earth and redirect our energies. He and Konnie Krislock are my favorite and most fondly remembered teachers. Konnie is such a vibrant personality, you just draw on her energy! I learned so much from them, and I owe them a debt which I can never repay. I guess all I can do is try to pay it forward, take their enthusiasm and energy and pass it on to my own son and other youth that I work with. Thank you Bill and Konnie! I love you guys!

Message: Paco, I do remember most of those. Jude and I went to Doc. & Bills several times while dating, until about 5 or 6 teachers walked in one evening while we were having pizza (Burned the pee wadding out of my mouth that night on that Pizza) including some of the famous and not so famous. Mr Haeuter, the Duffer, Sid the sailor, well maybe he was there, Mr. (Ex Ram) Bravo, Mr. Sevier. Also I think the Coach was there once. We never went there again after we found out it was one of the hangouts.:-)) I think it was called El Porto beach, which was right there by Doc's on the Strand, at the end of Rosecrans. They used to rent tubes and rafts at a place close to there. I don't remember any rental places close to 26th. BUT, I do remember the Banana trees we planted next to the showers though. The beach patrol actually left them there, for awhile. They were growing when they got pulled. That was a fun caper. They came from a guy named Charlie who lived on, I can't quite remember 147 or 148th st in Lawndale. He had a big circular driveway and the place was east of the blvd and there were Banana trees everywhere. Had a 46 Ford convertible. He drove into Frosties one night, with three of these trees in the back seat. Class act! He was nuts! He was a friend of my brother Dave, class of 58. We had to do something with them, so therein lies this story. Damn we lived in a fun time. You can imagine a 46 Ford with 3 Banana Trees riding in a back seat on the blvd can't you? If not, you didn't go to HHS. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU! Jake N Jude.
