Message: George Johnson -Reference -Patrice Lumumba- I recall a line from Bruce Brown's Endless Summer , He mentions a Reverse Patrice Lumumba as on screne a big African tribal dude is doing a 360 on Mike Hison's long Board...I assumed all these years that Patrice Lumumba was some ballet dancer from N.Y. at the MET ! Oh the low key humor of Bruce Brown...Didn't he do an Assembly once in the Boys Gym???

Message: I have obtained recently declassified information from an unimpeachable source (The Cougar) that will answer a bit of trivia that came up recently. The Hawthorne Youth Canteen opened its doors in the new Memorial Building on November 14, 1964. It featured a hamburger stand, pool tables, and a color TV. The first drop-in at the new location was October 12, 1964 before they officially had moved.
Thanks Jer', I knew those old Cougar papers would come in handy if you kept them long enough.

Message: hey there, ok, how many of the Cougar folks are showing up for volleyball? I really don't know about paying to stay in a hotel in my hometown city of Hawthorne. I am not sure I can digest all that in one thought. I do like the idea of meeting up and hanging out and having fun. Some things never change. I check my emails every other month and look at Cougartown when the spirit moves me, otherwise, I would love to hear from any wayward and wandering Cougars. Love to see ya now! Paula (just kidding on the time span of checking out emails - however, I am not very good at keeping up with it yet)
Hey Paula, I guess you're referring to your Reunion coming up on August 19th. Didn't know about a volleyball thing. Have a great time whatever you do.

Message: Ricki; If I remember correctly, Patrice Lumumba was a "Communist African Dictator" that was assasinated by our CIA in the 60's, by order of then, President John Kennedy. Unless you are referring to a different Lumumba. Unfortunately, the CIA was all but disbanded by the Jimmy Carter administration and subsequently, our intelligence sources also went away. Hence, the tragety of 9-11 snuck up on us and many thousands of U.S. citizens died.
Hey George, must be a different Lumumba....and now 9-11 is Jimmy Carter's fault? Boy, you learn something new everyday.

Message: But seriously, John, I don?t know how true the ?car in the pool? rumor was but there was a guy in our class, ?57 (I think it was Neil Jardine) who drove a Crosley station wagon. Many times after school he would be wandering around the parking lots looking for that car because some of our more athletic types would pick it up and move it to interesting locations like between buildings and trees, teetering on the planter between parking rows, leaning up a post, etc. All in good fun you know. ---Baxter
Hey Baxter, Yep, that was the thing to do in the 50s. I had a friend from Leuzinger, and he and a few buddies moved a teacher's VW upstairs in the main building. Lotsa fun......except for the owner of the car.

Message: Hey John, I checked on ebay for that 1960 year book which I would really love to have and it was up to 157.00 the last I looked. I checked on who was bidding and it seems the people that are buying them are dealers that I guess are going to resell them, Boo to them I believe in free enterprise but driving the price of a yearbook up to 157.00 or (yes!even over 300.00) is just plain dumb - mean - greedy - whatever! Well that was my gripe of the day, thank you carole
Hi Carole, Well, if those darn ol' Beach Boys weren't in them, they'd be 10 dollars a piece. By the way, my 59-60-61-62 yearbooks are for sale for $2500.00......JUST KIDDING!!!!

Message: Hey JB, sorry about the check being so late. We've had monsoons here and we had to have some repairs done to our house. I know, and the dog ate my homework. I just wrote the check and it will be in the mail tomorrow.
Mike Shay might remember this: The day that Mr. Orrell put Patrice Lumumba on the master absence list. Is there anyone out there who remembers who P.L. was? In those days those lists were taken very seriously. I don't think that schools send them out to teachers anymore. Back then they were posted daily.
Are Boy's Market and Clark Drug still around? I think that this may have been up before but I don't remember the answer.
Hi Ricki, No problem on "the dog ate my homework".
Boys is now Ralphs and Clarks was bought out by Sav On, soon to be CVS. Time marches on.

Message: Hi John, I know you thought I dropped of the planet, but no, I am still here. I just had a Cougar sighting (of sorts) ...Watching the news, and there was Joyce Sadler Miller. They were doing a story of Seniors doing Line dancing in Ashland Or. (not too far from Keno) I wasn't really paying attention till I recognized her. Boy, she hasn't changed much at all. I also had a Cougar sighting this weekend, as Tonya (Hobson) Braham and husband Steve were house guests for a few days. Does that count? See you and all 62ers in September.
Ahh Cheryl Thanks for the sighting of Joyce and Tonya. Joyce is the one who donated the Wich Stand Menu to Cougartown. Can't wait to see you and John, Tonya AND Joyce in September and as always, you know I LOVE YOU GIRL!!! Thanks for everything.

A Brew 102..No a Bubble-Up and some tooth powder!! And then have my cesspool emptied and then....Later Cougs!! I'm off to Centinela park and watch reruns of the fireworks show.

Message: Hi John, Since you seem to be lonely today I wanted to let you know that I, as well as probably a good majority of HHS alum who are aware of this site, check into Cougartown almost everyday. I don't write much as I more like to stay in contact and am more interested in other's lives than sharing my own. But to try and keep the scale balanced somewhat, I have a little story of the good old days for you. About my Junior or Senior year, a bunch of us used to play "Mud football". Ed Fink, Jeff Bottoms, Myself and a few others used to find the wettest, muddiest field we could and slip and slide our way from one end of ths field to the other. Had a great time playing, but it was hell going home all muddy on a bike or in a car, freezing the whole time. One of those memories that seemed worth creating at the time. I still sometimes feel like letting loose like that now. Its hell having to be respectable.
I hear ya' James and I too have the same problem. EX girlfriends can attest to that. Thanks for adding to the Feedback. I thought for a while that V1eagra was my only email friend

Hey Deano, Thanks for checking in. I think lots of Cougs check in to see what's written....so WRITE SOMETHING already.

Best regards, Steven Sanchez
Thanks Steven, who's Don?

Message: I graduated from Leuzinger H.S. in 1963. From 1963 to 1965 I drove a Chevy Corvair. I put dual fiberglass mufflers on it and baby moon hub caps. Someone stole the baby moons thus my vehicle was without hubcaps for a time. It sure looks like my Corvair in your A&W photo.
Hi Harry, It very well could be it. I think that picture is out of an early 60s Pylon.

Message: Cougar Sighting! Jeff Pieters, Class of 73 came in to my office with his cute Momma Thelma today - she lives nearby in Camarillo. Jeff is the one who led me to Cougartown eight years ago when he cruised through on his FedEx route, saw me and tossed me a note with the CT internet address and the rest is history. As a special thanks to him I bought him a membership a few years ago because I was and am still very grateful - this site has brought me much joy, special reunions, new friends and many adventures yet to come. And just because, I am going to renew that membership John - check your PayPal. Folks, that's a nice way to honor the someone who brought YOU here, not to mention a great way to ensure it keeps on going. And by the way, Jeff is still happily enmeshed in life in San Diego and looking great! And we WILL have lunch the next time he comes to see mom - John, will you join us?
Hi Sue, Thanks for the very nice thoughts and the dues too, and yes, I'd love to join you for lunch.
Thanks too for asking.

Message: John Cooper, Ed Greevy, Gerald Walkley (all class of ?57) and I (class of ?58) will be getting together as the Progressive contingent of the NW Cougar alumni. We will be meeting in one of the microbreweries in Portland this week. We were middle class kids who learned to work and play hard and love our country. But we also learned enough to question the value of greed and power in promoting the interests of the few at the expense of the common good. But, that won't keep us from raising our glass to all Cougars everywhere!
Hey Bernie, Thanks and have a micro brew for me, willya'.
