Message: Dear: John I came across your (our) website about 2 weeks ago and have been checking out all the pages. I moved to Cathlamet Wa. (town pop under 600) 10 years ago and while strolling through the feedbacks the name Cathlamet catches my eye (smarted for a little while)and I discover that Chuck Kimes HHS65 lives here also. ITS A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL. Hate the ride and the song can drive you crazy (in my case just a short putt and I dont play golf) The best way to go on that ride would be with a basket full of baseballs. Emailed him & he has responded but we haven't got together yet. Nick Fitzgerald I see you live in Medford Or. The wife and I will be in Medford on June 3rd lets get together. Would also like to hear from Dr. Bill Petersen and Mr. Rod (Gung Ho) Embry. By the way my name now is Bruce McMeans Hanson. Remember Bermuda Bells (ding dong) Wolf Whistles and Fuzzy Dice? Looking forward to our 50th Reunion. S--- that's scary! Anyway Dig You Cats Later. Bruce
p.s. John The check's in the mail
Hey Bruce, Sounds like you're getting involved. That's what it's all about and thanks for the shout. Good Luck reconnecting with your HHS friends, and I severely dislike that tune too.

Message: Just read Sharon's feedback about the hole in her backyard. We lived at 3708 W. 119th St. and also had a huge sink hole open up in our yard (Twice!). My father wouldn't let us play in the backyard by ourselves even after it was filled in. Makes you wonder what's under or NOT under that whole area.

John, this was my second visit to LA in as many weeks. In fact, I just got in from the flight. We flew over Parker AZ, and I couldn't see Alan Nelson's (my distant brother) house.
Ray
Maybe he moved it.....

Message: Man alive, so many interests and tangents going on here,. My brother and I lived on 129th street, and like so many of those before and after us, had our own small or large group of friends and associates on and about the block. In consideration of other requests or inquires have decided to ring in for the multi-year reunion, and hoping to get some of the people from the mid-sixties to seventies from that block to gather at the reunion. We had many from HHS that used to play basketball with us at the old church near where the Plaza theatre stood, near Taco Tio. Everyone come, and get together after all of these years, let me know. Belated Mother's Day to all of those gals near, dear and missed to us.

Message:Dear Mari, I wish to add my sincere condolences to the many you will receive, Mari, regarding the sad loss of one of your best friends, Carolyn. Your kind note of support to me about my Uncle Phil Jones helped me much; I hope that this small gesture of mine helps you Mari, at least a little. Of course Carolyn has not disappeared from existence, she is simply somewhere else right now. There is no doubt that, someday, you will see her again Mari. I wish you the very best. Sincerely, Michael

Message: I looked up our old Hawthorne houses on zillow.com and couldn't believe their values. We lived at 5012 W. 138th St. until I was 12 and then moved to 4617 W. 132nd Street where I lived until I moved to Texas to go to college. I told my mom how much the old houses were and she just had to laugh! I don't know how much they sold the 132nd house for when they moved 20 some years ago, but I suspect it wasn't even half of today's value or they wouldn't have had to pay a mortgage for the last 20 years.

Message: I just wanted everyone to know that my dear friend, Carolyn Petersen Baines, class of 67 passed away May 11. Her funeral will be at St. Catherine's Church in Torrance, CA. on May 17. Carolyn, Margaret Sweeney and I were best friends all thru high school and have always stayed in close touch with each other. Carolyn lived with my family our senior year and was my roommate after graduation and also one of my bridesmaids. I'm sure everyone will remember how much fun she was in high school; we had some wonderful years and I am heartbroken that she has left us so soon. She was very loved. Please keep her husband, Kevin and son Ty in your thoughts and prayers. I will miss her always.

Hi Mari, Thanks and see Margaret Sweeney Harding's feedback further down this page. Our condolences to you too.

Message: Ray Nelson: Did you happen to hear Shotgun Tom Kelley on K-EARTH when you were driving through Hawthorne? That's my cousin! Our family just takes for granted what he's done for a living forever so we have to remember to brag about him when we get the chance! We're all originally from San Diego so he was always on the radio down there when we were growing up. He went to K-EARTH 8-1/2 yrs ago to take over from The Real Don Steele (that brings back memories!). Anyway, we're proud of him even though we don't brag about him enough. And I know John, I owe you just a couple more pages of scanning! I start my new job tomorrow so after work I promise!!!
Let's see, we have Shot Gun Tom Kelley, Machine Gun Kelly and former(?) K-Earth DJ Chaz Kelly, who's married to Hawthorne's own Chris Montez. Lotsa' Kellys at or through, KRTH boy.
Also thank you very much Cindy, for supplying us with the class of 76 missing Senior pics. It is appreciated...

Message: Osborne 6-3340 - Etched into my bio-computer forever. At Eucalyptus School we ordered little bracelets and necklaces that had our name, address and phone number--sorta like the dogtags our fathers wore in the war. I lived at 12328 Burl Avenue, third house from the corner of Broadway and Burl. Our end of the block had the Gants, Haskells, Swinfords, Berrys, Hawkenberrys. Down and around the block were the Blazenskis, Kirkpatricks and many others too numerous to remember and mention. My parents bought their house in the Del Aire area in 1947. They had been living in Hollywood just following my Dad's discharge from the Army. My Mom really didn't want to move to Hawthorne 'cause it was "out in the sticks". Across the street, in what was to become the HHS athletics fields, beans were being grown on a "truck garden" bordered on the south by the Pacific Electric tracks and on the east by Inglewood Avenue. If I remember correctly my parents paid $8,500 for the three bedroom one bath home in that tract. I recall that my Dad said that his mortgage payment was $73 a month. My parents updated the house in the mid 1960s by upgrading the bathroom and kitchen and extending the kitchen onto the service porch that had previously been home to our ringer washer and laundry sinks. I believe the upgrade on the house was about $20,000. The home sold in the early Seventies for about $50,000. Just multiply that by about 8 to 10 to get the current value. I have a lot of great memories about growing up in Hawthorne during the 50s and 60s. I thank you all for sharing your memories of "Our Town."
Hey Tom, Thanks for the story. Lots of Hawthorne house stories and it just depends on your age as to how amazing the prices sound. My dad told me this story in about 1960....said he once bought the whole block where Robert F Kennedy hospital stands for 1900 dollars. He said he sold it about 3 months later for 2100 and thought he made one helluva killing.

Message: I lived in the Inglewood 2 zone also at 3822 W 109 St between Doty and Prairie from birth to the age of 12. Morningside HS was just finished being built when my family moved to Hawthorne, thank goodness. I looked up the old house on that site that was mentioned earlier and it's still there and looks just like it did when I lived there. No add-ons or anything, and it looked like the same orange tree is still in the back yard! I couldn't believe it! What a trip!! Someone did remove the old incinerator though. hehehe
No incinerator??!! I wouldn't pay full price.

Message: Thanks for the Site John. Looking up the prices of homes now, you could have bought half the neighborhood in 1950 for what "1 of these homes go for now..."
While I attended Hawthorne Intermediate, and High School's. Our house was at 3920 West 118th Place. The place I reside in now, should cost about $400,000. About 36 times what I paid for it when I was 23! So, do I get into a time machine to go back and buy this whole city block? Wow, I would give the Half Million Dollars just to be 17 again, John. One of the reasons I come to your SITE so often now days. Turning back the clock for the moment.
A few times I rode the Imperial Bus to visit friends in the Saint Francis Hospital in Lynwood. The middle of April I had Chest Pains, and stayed there Myself from Tuesday 'til Thursday. Looking back over my younger years, I know I should have been more kind, and less prideful.
God Bless all you Mothers, and Grandmothers, too...I haven't spoken to my Mom since 12, July 2000!
Well today's the day, so get to speakin' to her. Yep, time marches on and so do housing prices. Thanks Joe....

Message: Dan, I also attended Center Park Elementary School from 1st thru 5th grade. Wasn't Center Park called Center Avenue School until they built the park just west of the school? I lived at 3813 W.107th St., two houses west of Doty. I remember walking with my dad down Doty and across Century as my dad loved the ponies and played the daily double quite often at Hollywood Park. We moved to 5431 W. 116th St. at the end of 1969. Our house was on the north side of the street and was in the City of Los Angeles.
