Message: Another Cougar sighting! Today,(5/11) I watched Dennis Gonsalves, class of '75 coach his Peninsula High (formerly Rolling Hills) baseball team. Dennis is head coach and interestingly his team was playing West Torrance where his son Nick plays varsity baseball. Is anyone else from HHS coaching high school sports? I know Mike Whit(HHS 82) is head football coach at Leuzinger and Frank Paletta(HHS76) coaches girls soccer and basketball at Moorpark high school and I coach the pole vault at West Torrance. Anyone else out there coaching? Sound off Cougars!
Cindy W. how are the class of 76 Senior Pics coming?

Message: Hi, it's been a while since I checked in. I didn't know how else to do this quickly. And the notice in the paper got my Mothers name wrong. My Mother Nettie Jane Beach, passed away yesterday after a long illness. Now, you are wondering why I am posting this. The reason is, my parents have been active with youth organizations since we moved to Hawthorne, back in the 60's. Too many to list here. My Mother spent a lot of hours helping and supporting young people in Hawthorne. So I am trying to get the word out so that all that knew her at one time or another will know where the memorial will be held at. It will be held at Green Hills, in PV this Saturday at 1PM. We will also have a small reception afterwards. I hope that everyone that had the privilege to know my Mom, will attend. Thank you for letting me post this.
Sincerely, Polly (Beach) Martens
Hi Polly, I'm sure lots of people, here, remember your mother. Thanks for posting it and my condolences to you and your family.

Message: Hey Keith, First of all, thanks A LOT for the tip on the 'Zillow' website! I, too, have used it to look up 'old' houses where I used to live. I even looked up my friend's 'old' houses. It also gave me a good idea on how much they want for a house here in Golden, CO that I'm interested in. Secondly; Dude, you were on DYNASTY the TV series? I'd had no idea. I rarely watched the show (sorry), it just wasn't my kind of program (neither was Dallas-or The Dukes of Hazard for that matter). But if you Keith, a Coug, was in it I might take a second look at the re-runs! Did they invite you to be in the 'Reunion' that I heard about (but, of course, didn't watch)? I hope you're still getting residuals from that show, Keith-they made good money from it in the '80s! Later, MJL (my legal name today-since 1993-is Michael Jay London, no longer Larry Baglin)
Hey Larry, I can tell you are a NEWCOMER to this site.

Message: The zillow.com site that Keith Jones mentioned is really cool. I had already found that one. It is a satellite site. I looked up all my old homes in the area. You can click on the property then access two views. The second view lets you turn the picture four ways so you can see the front and back and side of the property. I checked out Hawthorne High. Some of the pics show the old Senior Square. There are so many more buildings than when I went there. I still can't get over the freeway. It disected my old neighborhood at Imperial and Prairie everything familiar is just gone.

Message: I think 'the mill' is to symbolize the process of school. Wheat is ground into flour to make it usable. School is to train us and help us develop into something usable. Sometimes it feels like a real 'grind' but the outcome can be worth it.

Message: Dear Britt, 'El Molino' (in Spanish) simply means 'The Mill' (in English). Was there ever a mill near HHS? Anyway, you're welcome.
Thank you Mike Larry, No mill in Hawthorne, but as I recall The Mill referred to the "Scholastic Mill" of schooling. BTW, The first HHS yearbook was called the Ephebian [Latin ephebus, early manhood] in 52-53. The El Molino was introduced in 1954

Message: greetings... My name is Jim Crowell... I lived in Holly Glen from 1954 to 2003, 50 years all told. I attended St Joseph Grade School, and then Serra High in Gardena, class of 70. Went to Loyola U, and did some student teaching at Hawthorne High in 1974-1975, along with Lennox and Mira Costa. John Carter was my master teacher, later became principal at Hawthorne. Became a science teacher at Serra, finally principal there from 1989 to 1993... moved on to Bosco High in Bellflower for the next ten years as science department chairman.
Almost became superintendent of the Centinela District, but politics blew the other way... that's life.
Represented the city of Hawthorne and also served as Chairman of the Los Angeles Airport Advisory Board in 1991.
My father, Dwight Crowell, delivered mail to the Beach Boys when they were over by the Hawthorne Airport.
In 2003, moved to a small town west of Indianapolis. In case any of the people I grew up with would like to contact me.

Thank you for your kindness. Jim Crowell

Message: This one is for you John - I haven't had much time over the last few years to check in but I just filled out the database info and it couldn't have been easier! Didn't even take me 5 minutes. In fact the longest part in the process was going back to my email to pick up my password and id. I've worked with lots of databases and yours is great! Good Job! Thanks for getting and keeping us all together. I'll hope to have time after graduation this coming Saturday to send you my long overdue dues and do silly things like clean my house, do laundry, remember what my kids look like - you know the important stuff. I may have degrees from Cal Lutheran University but I'll always be a Cougar! Have a great week everyone!
Hey Dawn, Congrats on the degree and thanks for the vote of confidence, It is appreciated.
