Message: Matt Peterson, For Slang take a look at: http://cougartown.com/slang.html also for earlier ('50s) http://www.newberry.k12.sc.us/mchs/50sSlang.htm (I don't know very many of these. They may have been from another part of the country or I'm just too young.) For '50s commercials take a look at the following: Caution there are cigarette ads! http://www.chiff.com/pop-culture/1950s.htm
Thank you Chris....

Message: To Matt, '74: One more thing (sorry John), most commercials were live, so anything that could go wrong, did (remember Betty Ferdell tugging at the door of a Frigadaire that wouldn't open, or a model shutting the door of a new model car the the outside rearview mirror falling off, etc.). Because of this, there wasn't many commercials with animals, or kids (was W.C. Fields the casting director?), except for David and Ricky telling Harriet how keen their Jello was.

Message: To Matt '74: Have your daughter go to the Google search engine, and enter: 50's Commercials ; she'll get at least a million and a half hits. Also, in the fifties commercials, something went on that is now not allowed. Factual example: In Ozzie and Harriet (and other shows), they would go from acting out their story straight into looking into the camera and pitching a product (gee, its gotta be good, cause Harriet serves it to Ozzie and the boys). And, every third or fourth commercial was cancer sticks.
Also, jingles were very big (anyone else got Dr Ross Dog Food etched in their memory?). With the right software, she can probably download and hear a few hundred.
"Dr. Ross dog food is doggone good, Woof". Meat, Liver, Chicken, Cheese, and Charcoal....

Message: The absolute magic of Cougartown has just played out once again. I just got off the phone with Ellis Twine who found CT because he ran a search for his own name in Yahoo and hit my post here about him playing "hot hands" with John Dobbs! So Ellis is going to start hanging here a little. Bevan, please send me an email -- Ellis gave me his email address and phone number to pass along to you.
What's wrong with Ellis adding it to the Alumni List?

Message: Re: Kieth Jones ?new subject. Who was your idol? I would have to consider Jack Lambie at the top of my ?IDOL? list. The year was 1972; Tom Valentine was building a 1903 Wright Brother glider (full scale replica). He had heard about a school teacher who was building super lightweight-foot launch glider for a summer school class project (the HANG LOOSE) in his garage out in Bellflower. We went for a drive to meet him. Jack, Tom & I struck up a solid kinship that day. As I would grow to discover Jack was an Indispensable Man, he was the first man to circle the planet on a tandem bicycle (with wife Karen for their Honeymoon!). He helped build the first Human powered Aircraft. Many of Jack?s innovative design concepts have made their way into modern everyday life. He designed the first cab over Diesel Semi Truck fairing (the Fuel Saver) that is now used ?stock? on practically all 18 wheelers. His teardrop/Dart Vader Bicycle helmet (the Lambie Lid) was first used by U.S.A. 84? Olympic Bike team to win Gold. Jack was singularly responsible for organizing the first modern era Hang Glider meet (the original OTTO Meet) on the hills of Balboa in Sept. 1972. >From investigating the Mojave desert ?sliding rock phenomena? to photographing Peruvian Condor in flight for National Geographic Jack Lambie lived a one in a milliontechnologically cutting edge life. I was truly gifted to know him as a very dear friend. I can still hear him chuckling his unique belly laugh.

Message: I saw Ellis play basketball for Stanislaus State against my alma mater Sacramento State circa 1980-81! I also remember something special about Ellis when he was at HHS -- he was an acrobatic basketball player and every time he'd do some insane twisting wrap around shot, he'd shout "Doctor" -- because Ellis WAS the "Doctor J" of Hawthorne!

I know several students and teachers have stumbled across Cougartown over the years for the 60's slang page alone! Heck, even Leuzinger's site states CTown is one of the best sites in the country! The rivalry was a bit different during high school years, LOL. Pat on the back to you, John, whatever happens.
Thanks Deb....

Message: As mad as he gets me Eddie Braun needs to be on that Wiki site. He is a major stuntman in Hollywood and has easily been in over 100 films. He doubled Charlie Sheen, Tony Danza and Jackie Chan. He was my boss on the film Dangerous Curves with Leslie Nielson. He held some kind of stunt record flipping a car 9 times or something like that in the movie Mt. St. Helens.
Even though Greg Staffon didn't make it to the majors he did very well in the minors and still holds a Florida State League record of 13 straight scoreless innings. He pitched 96 mph as a junior at HHS. Our stands were littered with scouts when pitched. The Dodger scout timed him at 96 mph and you could see and hear all the scouts drooling and wanting him badly. Anyone see the time when Greg threw a wild pitch and it went through the backstop screen and a scout.

Message: Matt Peterson, Thanks for the referral. I just added 'Al Jardine to the Hawthorne High Wikipedia entry. Note also that John Baker, Joe Mailander, Neil Larson, Keith Jones and perhaps some other Cougs provided information or performed edits to the documents also. Additionally, several Wikipedia editors applied page formatting. You and/or anyone else can edit the page. Make sure your entries are factual and also realize other people may come along and make changes. At least this page was not deleted as the Cougartown Wikipedia was. It was just deleted today. Here's the Deletion record for those who are interested. I will archieve the contents to the Class of 75 web site.
Geez Don, I AM CRUSHED. You didn't have to do it to me right here in front of everybody on the Feedback page. You coulda emailed everyone on the list and kept it from me. Oh well, maybe I'll join the Circus.....JUST KIDDING DON. Thank you for trying and Thanks to joseph, Neil, and W1P and anyone else who tried to save the Good "SINKING" (or sunk) ship, Cougartown. I say to HECK with the WIKI snobs. HEY how about we do Funk and Wagnall??

Message: Here is a new subject. Who was your idol(s) growing up besides famous people. Like my brother was one of my idols even though he beat me up and picked on me all the time. I haven't talked to him in 10 years. Here are a few others
Mike Colburn, was one of my biggest idols. His family was friends of ours and all his brothers and sister Debbie were too. But, Mike was awesome in everything especially baseball. He was awesome. Played in the big leagues. In 1976 he won Amateur Athlete of the Year in the whole country. Mike Scott was awesome too. He of course went on to win the Cy Young. Bill Sloey who was tough as nails. Dan Rice who I think was all-american at USC not sure though but he too was awesome and huge. John Dye cause he was unreal at football and could have gone along way if he was a little bigger. Bruce Phelps was a great catcher. He could hit as good as anyone anywhere. He should have played pro. Gary Allensen who did play pro baseball was awesome too. Coach Minami, who I knew let down cause I didn't make it to the major leagues. He really tried to help me and I screwed up. Thats it for now
I would say my family were my idols growing up. My dad was my best friend.
