Message: Hi Gary Bickers - As a regular reader and participant, and as an ardent fan and proponent of remembering and enjoying those important people of my life and development, I just wanted to tell you how very special your post about Ty Goodman was. It's been a big joy at this point in my life to recognize, accept, admit and yes, even love myself and others for our gaffs and goofs while growing up to become the people we are still becoming.
You were quite eloquent and the recent posts about Ty as he was nearing the end of his walk on this earth had me quite interested in who this fella really was. Thank you for sharing and showing us all that we don't have to be perfect to be appreciated and your love for him for the part he played in your life was evident. It was kind of you to share that with us. We all have a Ty and may likely have BEEN a Ty to someone else. You are a good friend and he was lucky to have YOU.

Message: My senior year our varsity basketball squad went a robust 5-17 with impressive wins over Avalon High (yes, the Catalina Island high school), Valley Torah (we beat them by 50 points -- they could not even get the ball in bounds after we made baskets), 2 wins over hapless Lennox (one in overtime) and one over league champ El Segundo (after Joe Galindo started a fight with their all league center Don Johnson (I kid you not) getting the both of them tossed!
The good news is that Leonard Agee was a freshman that year and ultimately he became the Cougars' 6'11" center who lead them to "basketball glory" (in the lowest divisions of CIF where our crummy play had ensured they would be stuck!) The moral to the story? Cougar varsity basketball 76-'77 was directly responsible for the best finishing HHS basketball teams in history!
(PS, anyone who knows anything about HHS in my years knows that we had some great basketball players in the school who refused to play for our "esteemed coach" (and former Mira Costa Mustang). The coach was a piece of . . . work, but without him driving away all the excellent players, I may not have made the team let alone become a starter!)

Message: I did something tonight that I probably would never have done, had it not been for John Baker. I looked through my senior yearbook. I saw pictures of people that were a great part of my life. Some I still see, some have passed, and some are probably still out there somewhere! We all grew up together one way or another. Get onto this site and let's get in touch.
Time goes by faster than you think! Thanks for everything JB.
p.s. I see a lot of mail from the Valencia Girls , but nothing from Cynthia, who I went all through school with (Eucalytus - HHS).
Where are you - Bill Langley, Jeff Callaway, and especially Karin Skelton

Message: Just some notes about my friend Ty Goodman. Ty has been very private the last 8-10 years and lots of us have been trying to catch up with him; we got our wish.
First, as he came to the end of his life, Ty wanted to talk to his high school baseball and basketball coaches and bless their hearts, they responded immediately and it meant so much.
The response from the other HHS people meant alot. Ty enjoyed it and so did his family. Life is a circle and Ty came back to us at the end.
A few thoughts:
We met when we were 6 years old and I knew he was different than me.
We rode our bikes on the gravel road because the city couldn't afford the pave it yet.
We pitched to each other for hours so when we played against each other we could get our batting averages up.
We played basketball one on one till his Mom would sent me home. We scored more points if we shot over the power lines.
We graded the girls on American Band Stand.
We went to grade school for the next 8 years.
We watch Soupy Sales together and could do all the voices.
We chose to go to HHS together, even though the church wanted us to go to their school.
We came to HHS in 1959.
We got out of HHS in 1963. The stories that would follow Ty at HHS are too many to tell in this format, but he was differant than we were.
Ty got to drive to the Prom in my sister-in-laws "62 Corvette and instead of just driving it, he DROVE it and the car was never the same.
Bill Daquila and I took Ty surfing one fall afternoon at 26th street and it was the best afternoon ever at the beach. Ty didn't ever surf again, he had been out on the best day ever, so why bother.
Ty was good at everything that wasn't good for you. He was a great smoker, good drinker, great card player and a pool player and golfer that had to be seen to be believed. If it was bad for you, he was the best.
Ty drove big Chevys and Corvettes on the boulevard.
Ty was always in the mix at the Inglewood Pool Hall and at Imperial Bowl; winning or losing alot of money.
Ty played golf like nobody I've ever seen. Ty's style was to do everything the hardest but most entertaining way possible. Ty holds the record for firing caddies and he missed his own wedding because he got in a big money game at Pebble Beach.
If you talk to coaches, teammates, friends or family you will hear the same story, Ty lived HIS life and maybe we liked it and maybe we didn't and he could care less.
He was a good man, a good father and as good a friend as he could handle to the rest of us.
I will be at his services. I will be there because I should and because I know Ty has one more trick up his sleeve.
Rest in peace.

Message: I saw Annette's post inquiring if you have to be a good golfer to be in the tourney? If you can make contact, you can play. We play best ball, so if you are a better putter than driver, you should do great. Of course this tournament is just a formality since the Effler boys probably have it locked up :) I just go to wear ugly clothes and beat the ball senseless. Anyhow, we want more women playing, so don't worry how well you play.
