Message: RE: John Crotty?your thread about?Baseball--The game has changed?.
Yes you are correct, Sir! One must also place the same measure upon the ?players? (notice I did not use the word TEAM). Over the last 40 odd years the large sports of the USA have lost the delicate arts of Teamsmenship & Gamesmanship in order to become ?profitable?. While reading your message I mentally included ?players? along with the spectators! (Quote)?see all the "trash." ?The language from the young ("PLAYERS?) Their dress [off the field/court] , ?the disrespect, their total attitude (.as individuals lusting for personal acclaim before the good of the team.).
You mentioned ?? it's about drunken obscenity and outrageous behavior and no one says a thing!? This also can be laid upon the ?players?i.e. the recent fiasco with the Vikings. Why has the face of professional sports changed so radically over the last half century?
Part of the drastic change is because today's sports are driven primarily by a desire for gain rather than an intrinsic love of the sport! On any Saturday one may witness throngs of parents cheering little leaguers in hopes that ?their kid? will make the cut and be drafted one day to the Yankees or the Falcons, so Mom and Dad can profit from Junior's $10 million dollar contract. Some children are driven mercilessly by their parent?s insane desire. But all that pales in comparison to the selling out of true sportsmanship to those holding the almighty buck.
Years ago there was such a thing as real teamwork, team-spirit and sportsmanship now, all that has been replaced by showmanship, self-indulgence and power brokerage not to mention personal publicity managers.
I prefer to watch a DVD in the comfort of my living room and find 21 days of grueling bicycling through the Alps during the Tour De France far more of a physical test than the Super Bowl or the World Series.
And don't even get me started on Number #3 & #8 !!!!!

Message: Is the restaurant Drysdale's. I think I ate their in the early 90's. It is long gone now though I think. Charo had a beautiful Mexican restaurant on Kauai way out past Princeville. ALmost to the end of the road. It got totally destroyed during Iniki. She was allot of fun. How about Lasorda's restaurant in Marina Del Rey is that still there. I thought they had good food but I do remember when it got shut down for a little while because of rats. I remember going to my first real drag races at Pomona for the Winternationals around 93' or so. Man what a rush. I talked about that for the longest time. You just can't believe the power those cars have. Standing at the finish line was awesome. It was a great time. Miss that out here. No real cars here.

Message: Regarding attending baseball games in LA. I remember going to the LA Coliseum to watch the LA Dodgers. It was fun, seats were great as the people in LA hadn't caught on to the fact how good they were. Remember Sandy Koufax?? Duke Snyder? Maury Wills? Don Drysdale? (Who opened a great little restaurant/bar in Kona, HI) I now attend Mariner games and so far haven't experienced the issues mentioned with regards to the Angels and Dodgers. Maybe there is a different mentality up here? The games are fun (I know we haven't done well) and the stadium guidelines are fairly strict with regards to language and how one should act. It is definitely family oriented. Watching the crowd during an LA Angels of Anaheim game is sad. Appears that it is one big social event. Go Mariners!

Message: Denny is so right on about how people used to dress when attending "events" back then. I remember going to Dodger Stadium with my dad and my brother. We all wore slacks and shirts. If you look at old movies or photos, the ladies were "dressed," the men wore suits and hats. When we went to dances, we wore ties. And every girl wore a dress, maybe their best dress. We took pride in our appearance.
Today, just go to a Dodger game and see all the "trash." The language from the young "fans." Their dress, the disrespect, their total attitude. It's not about a family outing anymore, dads and sons, or all of the family, it's about drunken obscenity and outrageous behaviour and no one says a thing!!! I went to my last Dodger game four years ago. Anaheim Stadium is somewhat better. And as far as movie theaters, turn off your GD cell phones, shut up or get out!!!!!

Message: Great old pichur show buildings and especially like the one of the crowd waiting to get into the UA. The search lights outside and if you look close the power lines for the streetcar can be seen going down Market street.
People used to dress to go out at night and it shows here with the ladies in heels and coats with most of the guys wearing ties. Also Inglewood used to have diagonal parking along Market St.
Great memory jogger.

Message: Great movie theater photos but I did not see the Plaza Theater listed. Hmmm? When we were small lads my cousin and I called the Academy theater the ?Sticker Show? because of the neon-spiked ball on top of the tower. Always had mixed feelings about going to that theater. The movies, seats, and décor were great but they charged a whole dime for a candy bar. Last movie I saw there was ?Blackbeard the Pirate.? For a month after that movie played, kids were talking like pirates all over our Hawthorne neighborhood. ?Har, me proud beauty, I be Blackbeard.? --- Baxter

Message: When you look at the picture of the Academy Theater the marquee looks blank. On closer inspection I could see some lettering. I put it in my picture program and darkened it. The top row says Errol Flynn and Bette Davis
center row The Private lives of Elizabeth and Essex Color - that starred the two on line one. Bottom row was Wayne Morris in The Return of Dr. X.(That also starred Humphrey Bogart). Both of these movies were released in 1939 the year the theater opened. Most of you weren't alive yet, I was a mere infant. I remember how pretty it looked at night when the colored lights ran up the spiral which unfortunately is gone now.
