Thanks Bob Stevenson

Message: Gosh, JB.....looks as if this past week was a busy and exciting one for you. I haven't logged on to CT in a week and I had a lot to get caught up on. I must say that it was my Dad who created the love of football for me - be it high school, college, or pro, I've always loved the game. The Trojans had the horses and the Heismans. But Texas had the ball. And The Man. A championship game that sputtered and coughed in the first half went into hyperdrive in the second. And when it was over there was a new title holder and a new national darling: Vince Young.
Looking forward to Super Bowl now!
You're right, Anita, and I take my hat off to Texas and Vince. Hard to beat the boys from Troy though, as Matt, Reggie a junior, Lendale a junior, and sophomore Dwayne Jarrett will probably all go to the Pros. And lots more talent like Dominique Byrd, Sam Baker, Steve Smith, etc.
A class corps by the Trojans which probably won't be equaled for generations. The best Trojan team ever....Probably so.

Message: Speaking of QB's, one Bill Daquila, the "golden arm" lead HHS to many a cheer between '61, '62. And a FYI, as I also remember its Bill's B-day today. Happy Birthday Bill from a friend of decades who remembers the entire Daquila family who lived across from HHS on Broadway. Jerry, Bill's big bro, played on the HHS CIF team in '59 and also was one fine hurdler as Bill was also one fine HHS baseball player. Both could have gone to the "bigs" in my opinion. Hi to Sandy Daquila too. I'm ready for the '06 cruise nights.
I too remember the Daquilas. Wasn't Jerry a Thespian too?? Happy Bday Bill....

Thanks Jerry, I was wondering if anyone was for the idea.

Message: JB..and fellow cougs. There is no more Wichstand. It was razed years ago. I hope you're not angry, but I called the LA Sheriff's Department (Marina Del Rey Station) to verify it's demise and was informed that there is a Savon or Rite-aid at the spot and some other small businesses. Also, the area would not be as "safe" as it was in our time...demographics have changed. (I hope I'm wrong about this and should correction be warranted...put me in my place!!!!)
Hey John, Sorry but you can call the Sheriff's Dept. back and tell them they are FULL OF IT!!! There's a health food store there and the building, with the tower, is in tact and has been perpetually preserved through historical status. I'm correct on this one and have seen the site in the last 3 months. You've been put in your place.

Message: John, have you been to the Wich Stand lately? The Class of '65 was there as part of their 40th reunion in October and I would go but I just sold my bullet proof Lincoln. Having spent a couple of hours there, as the tour bus broke down just behind the Wich Stand, I would say management is not going to redo their menu or their parking lot. Also, the carhop window and soda fountain is totally gone. It is a health food store today. You might want to think Pink's!
Hey Dan, thanks for the info and I know all of that, but wouldn't it be cool to do it one more time? I'm sure there will be pitfalls but that's what I'm here for. We'll see what they say....

Message: Hey John. Wich Stand sounds like a great idea, count me in. I been so busy emailing "That old gang of ours" that I haven't been to c-town in a while, boy have I missed out. John I think c-town is just the tip of the iceberg. It starts here then goes,(email) to person to person. Then group to group, and on and on. I guess what I'm saying is you have added a whole new segment to my life, and helped fill a void, thanks old friend. Let me take a moment to wish Adrianne (Longpre) DeAlejandro a very Happy Birthday. She a wonderful person and a dear friend. Have a great one Addy. Take care John. You ol' 62er.
Hey Jerry, you too have figured it out. It's here so why not utilize it. Thanks buddy, and Happy Bday Adrianne.....

Lotsa stuff to work out. Lights, carhop service, security, insurance, not to mention if we can use the facilities. I was thinking of making it a weekend event. Maybe Friday/Saturday or Saturday/ Sunday. This wouldn't just be Cougartown but any and all that wanted to attend.

Message: I grew up on Trojan football, was converted to the Razorbacks and Arkansas "hooked a lot of horns" IN ALL SPORTS in the old Southwest Conference. The only thing I hate more than Texas is the Texas band ... some games the "fight" was in the stands with the opposing fans - a real raunchy bunch, believe me. All-in-all, you've just gotta love college football and now it's on to the The Final Four!!!
Always been a John Wooden fan so the Bruins are my favorite when it comes to basketball. Yeah El Rojo, I know, I'm a switcher.

Message: Every time I think of the Wich Stand I remember the night the girl I was with could have gotten us killed. In the next row of cars near us there was a large group of large guys talking and yelling loud and frequently using the ?F? word. So there we were, wedged in by cars front and back when she turns around and tells them loud & clear that ?we don't appreciate their language? and for them to ?knock off the loud talk.??. I stopped breathing for a while trying to put up a supportive front while waiting for them to come over and jerk my door off the hinges and beat me with it. But, lucky for me, they looked at each other stunned and then one of them apologized to her. I don?t know if they were on probation or what, but it got quiet and nobody got hurt. Hmmm? I wonder if they will be there for the event --- Baxter
Now THAT'S funny...Thanks Baxter, and let's hope not.

Message: The coolest thing about the 1965 Santa Barbara game was that on the way up there (in Steve Gant's car?) we (whoever we were) heard Dave and the Marksmen's song (the name of which escapes me) on KFWB for the first (and I think last) time. Since our pal, Gene Fetko, was playing rhythm guitar with the group, we were stoked. I later read that Murry Wilson torpedoed the song with the LA stations. Nice guy.
Mack Brown definitely doesn't surf, but Mike Leach, the Texas Tech coach, does.

I will talk to the management and see if we can get this done. Parking in the rear, car hops, everything the same as it was in 1960. Let me know via email if you'd like to bring your cool ride , daddy's car, or just ride along with someone with a cool car or daddy's car to THE WICH STAND at Slauson and Overhill, for one last Cruise. This could be a FABULOUS event. People from not just HHS but all over; Burbank, The Valley, So Bay, Orange Co. wherever... Email me, as this could be the BEST event ever.

Message: Re: Gary Bickers. One of the best games HHS played was a CIF playoff in Santa Barbara. 1965. With only seconds left, and tied game, Tim Thomas rushed across the goal line but was denied the TD. The game ended tied but decided on first downs. Santa Barbara edged out HHS by one. The only good thing about that night was that my Uncle Jim took us to the "Santa Claus" restaurant down the road.
Sound familiar "Surf Babe"?

Message: I've looked at the comments and the Monday morning Q-B ing and will agree with no one. There was a horrible coaching error, the touchdown lateral before the half not being questioned was huge. I also agree with Steve that I don't think there should be flying touchdowns!! Put the dern thing on the turfffffff!!!!! Or your foot in the zone!!!! Anyway UCLA would have kicked their buns.:-)) Other than John getting me to root for a loser, ah, sc. It wasn't a bad game. 4th and how much and lose? 9 seconds? Ah heck great conversation. I love ya MMAANN!. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU. Jake N jude.
The lateral turned out to be a 3, and maybe a 10 point switch, but Trojan fans do not cry. It was a great game and the Longhorns won. NUFF SAID on that. Now the Bruins beat Northwestern badly so I guess the only teams that let the PAC 10 down were USC and Oregon. May the Mighty Cougar be with you too.

Message: January is the best month for Cougar sightings, at least for me. I had a nice phone conversation with Debbie Gauntt class of 1969 and I ran into Mike Trotter class of 1971 and his father Lloyd. Anyone who played Little League from about 1960 on will remember Lloyd Trotter. They both looked great. Now I think I will go sit in my deck chair and catch a few rays and watch the Babes of the Beach. No, it?s not what you think, about this time of the morning all of the mothers take their children out for a walk along the strand. And those Babes are great. 80 degrees plus today. I love So Cal.
