Message: It's been hot and beautiful here, now that the winds and rains have stopped. It was 80 on the sand yesterday, where I happened to end up taking an afternoon siesta. But, before I did, I had a few words with a man I met there. Believe it or not...it was the Texas Longhorn's head coach. I congratulated him, because I am, afterall, a lady. (Don't go there, John.) He's a very nice man, tired and probably hungover, but very nice, for a Texan. Other news, Bob's Big Boy is back on Hawthorne Blvd down by Pacific Coast Hwy, in Torrance. I'm happy to see it has returned to it's original location after several restaurants have come and gone. And, last but certainly not least, does anyone have an update on Hawthorne's new high school? I heard it's beautiful but haven't been by to see it. Anybody have a photo or am I going to have to drive east of the blvd? DZ
1. Didn't know Mack Brown was still in town, AND was a surfer.
2. Didn't know Bobs Big Boy was back.
3. Didn't know Hawthorne was breaking ground on the new High School.
I'm totally in the dark here....

Message: Was SC and Texas a bigger upset than Hawthorne over Santa Monica High in '59; I don't think so. Still the best High School football game I ever saw.
Hawthorne over Samo was a HUGE upset. Supposedly we couldn't carry their water pail. (they had water pails way back in the stone age).

Message: Well I would have agreed with Steve about the flying touchdown if my son hadn't explained it to me when I asked. I think he figured that I was stupid and so old that I couldn't hear because he said kinda loud "that goal line goes around the world, doesn't matter where you cross it, it is still breaking the plane". If you old Farts are still around in about 14 years, watch out for the quarterback at SC, Spencer Colby, that is what my grandson says he is going to be, that boy can throw a perfect spiral, he throws it a long way too, he is only five and a half. Loved the game, hated the outcome.
Another proud gramma.Thanks Cindy...

Message: I saw a great game last night. The outcome wasn't what I bet on, but although both teams benefited, can someone explain to me the "out of bounds" phantom touchdowns? I thought at least one foot or the ball had to cross the line, not a flying body one yard OB. But before you football jocks berate me, remember a played water polo!
WATER POLO!!! Steve, You shouldn't even be in this conversation.

Message: BOY! The wind was blowing so hard last night that right before kick-off our cable went out. Its a hard -n- fast wind out of the gulf of Mexico, I did get to see our Air Force Acadamy bring in the game ball, We had to settle for a DVD my kids pick out "MY COUSIN VENNY". Tough game I bet, Can Mr. Sloey please tell me who won. The Pony express rider won't be here until saturday. Fight-On!
Hey Kirk, TEXAS WON!!! OUs 47 in a row is now safe again.

Message: I swear this next statement is true. While watching the game at my buddie's house last night, I said I sensed an upset. They said I was nuts. And in the first quarter, when SC went for it on fourth instead of kicking a field goal, I said, "That might be a huge factor later on." I swear I'm telling you the truth. Looks like I was right both times (sorry to say). Now that I'm retired, maybe I should open a sports booking service, huh?

Message: Afterthoughts:
1. Curse of the Heisman: Wouldn't it have been better if Vince had won the Heisman and was doing the talk show circuits for the past month? Seems like he got a little motivated to prove a point.
2. McKay Wisdom: A billion Chinese and a billion people from India do not even know that a game was played for the national championship last night (However, smart money from Pakistan was on Texas).
3. Defense Wins Championships: When offenses are equally matched, the better defense determines the outcome. Inability to tackle or disrupt the rhythm of Vince killed the Trojans. Their vulnerable defense finally brought down the Trojan horse.
4. Sometimes against the great teams you have to play the percentages. 90 yards in under 2 minutes is a lot harder than 55. More things can go wrong for the offense on a long field. Next year PUNT THE BALL PETE!
4. What a great run it was! The streak places USC up with the all time greats such as OU of the 50s, who probably did not have as stiff a schedule over their 4 years as USC, and Miami of the early 90s. Savor this because it wont happen again for a long time.
Anyone excited about the SuperBowl?
KILLED THE TROJANS?? You make it sound like it was a blowout. I do believe if Lendale White had made that 2 yards on 4th down, USC would be the victor. But then I guess you Stanford guys didn't have much to talk about this year, so go ahead and "Thursday Morning Quarterback".

Message: John, Just wanted to applaud your good Cougartown commentary on the UT-SC game. SC has always been one of favorite teams, but since I've taught at UT for 26 years you know I was 100% for Vince and the boys last night. Amazing game; amazing post-game. Bush went over the Horns locker room to congratulate the team afterwards; Vince eulogized Reggie in the post-game press conference. SC made SoCal look good; UT made Texas look good. I hope Vince Young comes out, gets his money, and makes the pathetic Houston Texans look good. I need to pro team to follow down here.
Hi Lance, With all the Heisman hype and media coverage the last few weeks, it's brought the players, especially Bush Young and Leinart closer together. These guys do respect each other and it was great to see each of them expounding the virtues of the others. Great game and this one WILL be remembered for a long time. If SC had to lose, it was the right time. They lost to the best team in the nation....

Message: I am so upset. I was ready to watch the USC-Texas game and our Direct TV went out, some sort of solar interference with the satellite. No TV. So I was stuck watching a DVD, my favorite movie of all time, MY COUSIN VINNY. I just love the way he handles himself in that movie making such fools out of those pompous As#%$. MY COUSIN VINNY he sure was great tonight when I was prevented from watching the Trojans win another national championship. So how bad did they beat them longhorns? 4-5 touchdowns? I bet that young Greeasby is embarrassed now. Go Trojans!
Uhhhhh....yeah.

I still get up to the "Stand" several times a year. Poor Richards across from there is now La Louisian......an exceptional restaurant. I can still visualize the line of cars lined up to get into the Stand every Friday and Saturday night. What a time we all had.
Hey Ken, Our paths must have crossed many times as I too was there in the glorious early 60s. What a great time to grow up. Thanks for the Feedback.

I still am a fan of ND and UCLA when they are playing someone else. I still am pissed at SC for not taking that piece of land in Malibu for a new campus instead of Pepperdine. Do you guys all have red shirts to wear tonight? I do. By the way Carson Palmers younger brother went to Mission Viejo High and is now the QB at UTEP.
Hey Gary, I've got my USC Tshirt, Rose Bowl hat (thanks Dennis K.), pennant, finger, face paint, lucky USC boxers, and beer cozy. I am ready to Rumble.

Being from a family that always roots for OKLAHOMA, and seeing how most of our players come out of BAJA OKLAHOMA I hope that the SC "SPOILED CHILDERN" get an old fashion clock cleaning! Sorry John, but being on top for so long they just need a little humbling! Now if O.U. was there?
And to Jeff Sutton, The bet is the same..
Hey Kirk, You mean like the "Clock Cleaning" the Sooners received in last years Orange Bowl? I guess rooting against USC isn't a mortal sin. Good Luck to both teams.

I already got chastised by Jim Sloey for that comment, but isn't Santa Margarita High in Mission Viejo or kinda close, so what's the PROB?
