Message: Not HHS related but very inspirational. WHo got a chance to watch the Little League World Series. Was that a game or what. Hawaii was awesome. That was one of the most exciting baseball games i ever seen. We are proud of them here. I remember my 12 year old year everyone thought we had a chance to go to Williamsport. But we screwed it up.
I think when Dean Morris, my brother, Mike Colbern, , Mike Scott, Gary Allison, and some other greats played they had a team that could have went all the way. If I remember right my brother pitched a no hitter in one game. He had a few no-hitters. He was an awesome BB player but wasn't smart enough to pursue it.

Hey Keith, I saw the game yesterday and it WAS an awesome game. The best Little League Championship game I can remember.

Message: I can't believe how this picnic is taking off. We have well over 125 people so far and many people who are going, have not signed up. I encourage them to sign up so that we know how many to plan for. John is going to put a map of the area we will be in, up on CT. It's a great area by the lake, paddle boats and train rides. Remember, this is a bring your own food event. If you're drinking, keep it in a cup, as alcohol is not allowed in the park. Also, you can bring your dog, but it must remain on a leash. We are going to have some very fun and different games this year. Regarding games, as I mentioned earlier, I could use some panty hose for a very funny and fun game. Please e-mail me at sharonlleach@cs.com if you can donate some. They don't have to be new, just clean.
I never wear some other ladies DIRTY panty hose. Also, bring your kids and grandkids too. I just talked to Jim Sloey and he's donating a few boxes of Uncle Bucks Pretzels as prizes. We'll also give away a few Tshirts, Cougar Balls, and much more. This one is shaping up to be a fun event so plan on it Cougs.

Message: For anyone who lives in Torrance did you hear about the power outage in the South end of town. Seems a couple of mylar birthday balloons got tangled up in the power lines. They said something about I'm 60 plus this many... And with that all I can say is "oh Marsha , Marsha , Marsha..( quiet dinner my a--. )
What a blast last night....

So THAT'S why my power was off for 4 hours. Yes, we did have a great time and thanks again to you, Karen and Bob, and the rest that showed up last night. BTW Cougs, it doesn't have to be a birthday to get people together. Email some friends, get together for a couple of hours and just talk about your HHS days. It's very invigorating.

Message: I return to Cougartown to find folks discussing which of the Beach Boys couldn't sing. ????? How on earth could they have sounded so good if...... So far Al Jardine, Mike Love and Brian Wilson have been called out as being poor singers. I guess it must have been Dennis, Carl and Glen Campbell who produced the harmony that is so clean on everything they recorded.

John Baker had his face in a huge margarita, Tom Shelley, Harry Plotkin, Kathy Brooks, John and Annie Rout, Barbara Norris, Maureen Trott, Bob and Karen Fraser........they were crazy and having such a good time, for sure they were celebrating John's birthday. They said they were waiting for Paco but he never showed up.

Marsha, what can I say. I always have a fun time with you and this bunch. Thank you very much for setting this up. Message: Good Morning John Baker. Got up this morning remembering the first time we met 7 years ago. Cougartown was in it's infancy, we had just discovered you and thought you were so remarkable we wanted to meet you and take you to dinner. Sister Sharon and Patty and Gloria (V5 and V6), Darryl, Mr. Key and a few others converged on Cozymel's and had to pick you out of a crowd. Had never seen you before but there was no mistaking you. You became a member of the B and V clans, a dear friend, and we have no doubt, you changed our lives in a really, really good way. The bonus was getting to meet all of the other Cougars we'd never known before but with whom we all have that grand Hawthorne connection and of course, restoring our long lost friendships. Thanks for enriching my life with stories, people, laughter and love. I wish you the happiest birthday and many, many more. I'm sorry we'll miss you today but Sharon and I owe you lunch real soon. We love you maaaaaaannn!
Thank you Sue and you know I feel the same way about all of you. Hope you guys all have a special day today (Happy Birthday Sharon and Daryl). Have a Margarita for me and I'll do the same for each and every one of you.

Message: It's the month of Aug and as I drove by a local High School and saw a bunch of kids I was thinking it Must be REGISTRATION day and thought flashes by me. I was thinking on my 1st day(Aug 1977) on how nervous I was coming from Hawthorne Intermediate going to HHS and being a lowly freshman. I had my sister(Toni, C/78) help me go through the motions as to how to pick my classes(had to had this and that)and was nervous as I didn't know what good teacher to choose from. Some classes were closed so I had to take some teachers my sister claims weren't great to have. As I was finish with my pickings I was sitting down at the lunch table with a few buddies of mine and here comes Couch Minami. He asked us if we sign up for Football and we said no. He said, "Oh man, you guys want to get any girls you gotta sign up for Football". Well, I was really a quiet shy guy who kept to himself so I said, "Ya, I do like to know some chicks". So I and Mike sign up for it. Turns out that is one of the best choices I made because I never played football and my 1st year in football was great. I was really good at it and took "Best Lineman" award. And my girl chasing began...hehehehe. Thanks Couch Minami!
I went the car route for girls.

Message: Cougar sighting!! On Saturday Kathie and I went to the Cerritos Center for the Peforming Arts to see Smokey Robinson perform. When we entered the lobby there was a group of people we recognized not just one or two but fourteen! Annie and John Rout, Joyce Savisky Chance, Maureen ?Mo? Trott, Barbara Norris, Marsha Russell, Karen and Bob Fraser, Sherry and Doug Wingo, Kathy Brooks, Harry Plotkin, Judy and Jan Blomsterberg. It was unusual to see such a large group of Cougars outside of a Cougartown function. I hope that they enjoyed the performance as much as Kathie and I. It was totally awesome! We have tickets to see Al Jardine later this season at Cerritos CPA. Anyone else going?
Thanks Chris, great siting

Message: Thanks to Jim Fox for posting those "Dominator" photos. Besides the "Dominator," I can't think of any other major shipwrecks in our South Bay vicinity (unless you want to count a couple of Redondo Beach fishing barges that sunk). Seems to me that the original "Princess Louise" was towed out and sunk. Wonder if the old "S.S. Catalina" is still above the surface in Baja?

Message: I think we agree that when the Beach Boys were around they sounded awesome. Absolutely one of the favorite bands in history. And I don't know about any of the other members on how they sound but I do know that Brian Wilson's voice has something to be desired. But I guess that is to be expected from all the problems he has had in the past. He does sound better than Gilbert Gottfried (I hope).
In my opinion, he sounds 50 times better than Mike Love.

Message: I read the message from Pat Underwood about how Mike Love could still sing and Al Jardine couldn't. I have been a good friend of Al's since high school. We have a folk group in the early sixties called "The Islanders". Let me tell you he has a fine singing voice. If Pat thinks that nasal twang of Mike Love is singing then he must be tone deaf. Al has an album out called "Al Jardine, Family & Friends Live in Las Vegas" He solos on a lot of the songs and does a much better job than Mike could ever do. I think that people like Pat like to get on a message board and try to be important. Pat certainly has a right to his opinion, I think he is way off base on this issue.

John, tell him to post a picture of the box too, it's great! He should be going live any day with the website so I think everyone on C-town should be ready to order so we can make Uncle Buck's Pretzels the official C-town snack food! Let's get them out to every state where an HHS alum lives and have our friends and neighbors ordering too!
How about donating a few boxes as prizes for the Picnic.

Message: I didn?t mean to upset anybody about the ?Beach Boy? bit I submitted on Friday. I have in my video files Al Jardine singing ?Help Me Ronda? in 1965 and yes he did sound good. When I wrote the piece I just couldn?t think of anything he had done. Sorry, I?ll think next time. Now about my e-mail address, it?s ?onefamilyhistorian? not ?Beach Boy Historian?. Over a five year period I researched my family history and the final product was a 231 page book about the Clemetson family, all without the help of a computer. In my family I can tell you who?s married to whom, when this one was born or when he or she died and if you want information farther back then the 1800?s I?ll have to look it up in my book. So yes I can be ?Cute? with my e-mail address, in regards to my family. I?m sitting here and I read this to my wife and she started to laugh. When I asked her what was funny she said; ?The part about Mike Love being able to sing. He can?t sing now nor has be ever been able to sing. John?s right, you are tone deaf.? If anybody needs me today, I?ll be in the corner pouting.
Hey Pat, your wife is right on the money. Next time let HER critique the "Boys".

Message: Obviously, Pat Underwood's not heard the Al Jardine Family & Friends cd recorded live at the Las Vegas MGM Grand Hotel in November, 1999. Al's exceptional writing and singing talents just jump out and grab ya! I've never heard such an ignorant critique of the BB's before ... Pat, you need to turn up the speakers and just ENJOY the tunes, okay? A historian you're NOT, so leave it alone and read Alan Boyd's comments on Al Jardine. This man directed and edited the Grammy nominated documentary "Endless Harmony: The BB Story" - you just might learn what us oldtimers already know and appreciate!
Now see, I knew that was going to get the backs up on a bunch of diehard BB fans.

Message: Leave it to Larry Bach to dredge up some old memories. His mentioning of the "Dominator" reminded me of the times we used to go fishing off P.V. and Redondo Beach in my grandfather's boat in the early 1960s. We would pass by the "Dominator" wreck. It was pretty much intact except being split in two. It was mentioned at the time that some people trying to explore it got killed. I wonder if anyone has any photos of it? By the way, Happy Birthday!
Thanks Armand...
