Message: Back in the late 80's I was driving and was in traffic in front of the mann's Chinese Theater. I look over to my left and it was Rick Dees driving in his jag (i had a little Beemer. I didn't say anything to him but I picked up my car phone (no cell phones yet)and called him. I knew him for awhile and earlier that week we had lunch. So I called him and we were talking for about a minute or so. Finally I ask him where he is at and he tells me. I say wow so am I. he says where and I say right next to you and he looks over and we smile and say hi while still talking on the phone. He was pretty back then. But I think he was even bigger in the early 90's. I remember the station to listen to was KHJ. No one even listened to FM radio. Now it is the other way around. I rmemeber Eric Kues was one ofthe first people I knew who got a cassette deck. he said look how many cassettes you can fit in a shoe box, way more than 8 tracks.
Well you know, I just met Parnelli Jones yesterday for the first time at a Rich Sloan BBQ, and you know what he said to me? "Hey John, you talked to Keith Jones lately?

Message: In the early '70s some friends and I went up to Hollywood and staked out the KMET Studios, hoping to catch a glimpse of Mary "Mounds" Turner, their evening DJ. We met her on her way out and and had a good 15-20 minute conversation with her. A really nice girl and not at all what we expected. We perceived her to be some blonde bombshell from her on air voice and personality. It turns out she was a cute and petite brunette. Now days a stunt like that would result in some kind of restraining order.

Message: John I am so happy that you started cougartown, because I can logon any time of the day and cougars always have something too say. So many memories come from your site that I can relate too. You had a lull in postings last week; I think one or two cougars posted in a single day. Of course you know I went to Lawndale High and they have their own site set up by Gary Gatel. There hasn?t been a single posting in the last eight days, so the saying ?Be true to your school? just went out the window , for us anyway. So keep up the good work cougars, even one posting will get the old memory glands flowing and to me that?s really groovy.
Thanks Pat, Maybe it's Summer vacation time. Kids out of school etc.

Armand or any other KROQ fans, any stories to share when they were newly starting and used to broadcast from hotel rooms?
Anyone remember a kid from Torrance High School who used to call 10Q during the Disco years. I know it's not strictly a Hawthorne memory, but last I heard he and his wife were working in broadcasting in the Sacramento area. Always nice when a local kid does well.

Message: When I was a tyke, I used to have a little transistor radio under my pillow, listening to the Dodgers. Sometimes I could stay awake for the whole game, other times....no go. I believe they were on the flagship station KABC for ever. Vinny Rules!
Anyone, what is the name of the song they always started their broadcast with ?Let?s go???batter up??.we?re taking the afternoon off????. It?s a beautiful day for a ballgame???!!!! I loved that song. When it was played, I knew it was time to break out the batting gloves and get ready for some ball.

The Dodgers have been on KFI-KLAC-KMPC and now on KFWB.

Message: I used to listen to Robert W. Morgan also. In the early 70's, I moved to Connecticut for a few years, and was surprised one morning to hear "Morgan in the Morning" on the radio! And it was my ol' fave, Robert W. Morgan! I wonder if he was syndicated back there at that time or if he actually moved back there too. It sure was good to hear a familiar voice! As for Charlie Tuna, I do know he was around at the time that I had my youngest son, David. Charlie's wife and I were pregnant at the same time and our sons were born a few weeks apart. That was in 1967! He talked about his wife's pregnancy and the birth of their son a lot on his show.

Message: Does anyone remember the Hostess cupcake food fight on Dick Clark?s ?American Bandstand? televised from Philadelphia? It started after Dick did the commercial for the Hostess sponsor and, as usual, they tossed packages of the cupcakes to the dancers. One of the wise guys opened the package, mashed up the cupcakes, and threw them back hitting Dick on the side of his head. Then the fight was on. No one got to see too much because of quick camera work and a break for a commercial. I got the story directly from the wise guy who started it (we were in boot camp together in the early ?60s). I was a little hesitant to believe him but some of the guys recognized him as an ?ABS? regular and then a year or so later I saw him in a rerun of the show. He said that Dick Clark was pretty cool and ended up laughing about it after they got him cleaned up and his makeup back on... Baxter

Message: Hey there Armand, I thought KPPC was cool since the DJ's often played entire albums without any interrupions whatsoever, didn't talk over the beginning of songs, and played a good deal of experimental music not heard on KHJ or KRLA. One of the DJ's, Elliot Mintz, interjected his Hippie/Zen ideas into his evening spot on Sunday nights, often reading passages from Herman Hesse's "Siddartha". FM radio has never been the same.
Now don't get me wrong but I always thought KPPC and the Mighty MET were nothing but "Loady" stations full of drugged out DJs. Different eras I guess.

CALIFORNIA FILM LOCATIONS for AMERICAN GRAFFITI: The film was inspired by George Lucas' own adolescent years cruising the Strip in Modesto, on Highway 99 between Stockton and Fresno in central California. Despite this, Modesto is not where the movie was shot. The two towns used, were Petaluma in Sonoma County and San Rafael in Marin County.

Message: All this talk of old radio and DJ's is really cool. As we speak KLOS is running their "rock n roll A-Z" Everything this station has ever played in the course of 25 years will be played. I with Dan J. about Jim Ladd, but one of my favorites was JJ Jackson. Enza brought up these bands that are still going strong, ironically, my 12 year old even though he does like Foo Fighters and Green Day he likes ACDC, the Who and Pink Floyd, (I can hear Dan Johnson going yee-haw). Meanwhile my 13 year old nephew thinks that Led Zeppelin is the best thing since sliced bread. I do remember the Lloyd Thaxton show. Well I hope everyone has a safe and sane 4th of July!

Message: Thanks everybody who emailed and posted that it was indeed 'Cam' Nelson who was the go-go dancer on that afternoon dance show in the 60's. And, speaking of Sam Riddle and his DJ days: we know that the call letters for the station was KHJ~what were the numbers on the dial, anyone remember? And, I too remember going to bed with the ear piece of my transistor radio in my ear listening to the likes of Stevie Wonder, Rolling Stones, Beatles, The Supremes and other bands/artist who have survived the test of time. Which brings me to wonder how many of our current 'contemporary bands' that are so popular now with the 'kids' today will survive 40 years and still be called 'Clasic Rock'? I don't think that Brittany Spears or Snoop Dog will have the honor of being called legends in 40 years~huh? I am SO happy that my heyday was the late 60's-70's~ I don't think I could of survived my adolescence without all that great music! :)

Message: Speaking of DJs who changed lives, 6 weeks ago, I went to the "Hollywood Star" ceremony for Jim Ladd also of "The Mighty Met" I am fully aware that "All Things Must Pass," but the death of KMET in favor of THE WAVE (oh, the irony, oh, the horror) is the most tragic event of my lifetime (OK, that's a little over the top, but it was a negative development). I remember KMET sponsoring Cal Jam 2 at the Ontario Motor Speedway in 1977 -- what an amazing event! 250,000 people, Ted Nugent, Heart, Santana, Bob Welch -- it was rock n roll city. I hitchhiked from Sacramento (where I had moved for college) for that show. Was supposed to meet up with Bob Bates -- never saw 'em

Message: Speaking of disc jockeys, the early days of the mighty met with B. Mitchell Reed were the best. He would play tunes that no other station would play, give insight to what inspired the tunes and the group/person responsible for them and the latest info on who was playing where. I sat with Jeff Gonzer, KMET morning guy, down at the Miramar Bar in San Felipe back in '75, and B. Mitchell walked in a we spent four or five hours talking and consuming cervasas on how influencial FM stations were in the late 60's and early 70's. Reed focused on the culture and how much music was an influence and only certain FM stations played "underground, radical" music. An incredible person with insight and a point of view on every subject. Gonzer was with the MET for awhile then went back east. He resurfaced with KLSX when they played music, then back to Boston. Some good times with people who changed the voice of radio and the music we listened to.
