Message: Cal, was it Jones Lumber? I am not sure if I remember where they were located, but I remember some funny Freeman family stories about Jones Lumber. If my brother Tom (c/o64) is reading this he will chuckle... Also across from HHS on Inglewood Ave was Rasberry lumber. We found Chet Rasberry through this site. Let me know where Jones Lumber was located if anyone remembers. Have a safe Fourth of July. And say a prayer for all that keep us safe every day of the year! Hugs, Jan
Jones Lumber (or Firewood) was, and IS, on Rosecrans about Inglewood Av. Thanks Jan

Yes they were and G.O. Gary Owens is still going strong in the LA area, on the Fabulous 690 out of Mexico. How about the deceased, Real Don Steele, and Robert W. Morgan? Also, one of my alltime favorite DJ's had a skit called "Helen Trump" and it opened with, "He climbed her stoop and reached for her knocker" who was he?

He often talked Spanish announcing records and doing commercials and general conversations.
And Hunter Hancock with his music opening, "Blues to Boogie and Bebop to Ballads" he would say. Went to sleep many nights listening to HH. Great memories again Always A Cougar HHS 59'

I remember they had one or two of those tall machines that could straddle a stack of lumber, pick it up and drive away with it. Fun things to watch. I guess todays container movers are just a bigger version of them.
Ok John, what was the name of that lumber yard? I sure don't remember, but I wouldn't be surprised if you do. Cal

Hey John, I think you were in one of my classes at Hawthorne Intermediate and/or did you go to Ramona Elementary?.
I only went to HHS for two (2) weeks when I was expelled from Leuzinger and sent there, however, after only two weeks, I got kicked out of HHS & ended up at South High in Torrance. Funny how things work out, as I ended up with a career in law enforcement, spending 29 years with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept., retiring about 5 years ago.
I worked Lennox station for several years patrol and narco, before going to the SWAT team. I could tell you a lot of stories about Lennox, Hawthorne & Lawndale but, I don't really think your readers want to know, it would just spoil perceptions of yesteryear.
P.S. Great site keep it going.
Hey George, I remember you. So THAT'S where you went. Welcome back and feel free to jump in anytime.

As I remember it, that name ?Hunter Handjob? evolved from Hunter Hancock playing a Johnny Otis hit over and over called ?Willie and the Hand Jive.? Then Hunter Hancock was called ?Hunter Hand Jive? and so on.
I remember the DJ Bill Balance got fired from his radio show a couple of times for inappropriate but funny things he would say and do. Like when he would announce a song he was about to play he would not say the name of the song, he would say something like, ?Now here?s a great song dedicated to all you lonely boys at the drive-in theaters.? Then there would be a pause and ?Willy and the Hand Jive? would start playing. I had to pull off the road a few times from laughing at his jokes... Baxter

He owns hundreds of guns from the original Colt 45 to one or two Tommy guns of the 20's. He has muskets and some pearl handled dueling pistols used by somebody famous. He has guns I've never heard of from wars I never studied. But he can tell you exactly who made them and how and where they were used and by whom. He's a walking talking encyclopedia of weaponry and if I'm not mistaken, it was Alfred Hitchcock who gave him his first piece that started the life-long hobby.

I guess we just have to admit that some of our experiences were not unique and were shared with other places. But we all know which Boulevard was the best for cruising. And that was the one that ran straight through the center of our town.
On another note, I think Al Jarvis was the first person to play records on the radio back in the early 30?s. The others had live bands at the time.

My wife, Sherry?s (Piper ?62) favorite is still Bill Haley and his Comets ?Rock Around the Clock.? That changed it all. American Graffiti: John, I agree, even though a lot of towns had their cruisers, when I saw that powder blue T-Bird driven by the blonde I know that was no coincidence. The writers had to have spent time on H-blvd on Friday nights. Too real? Speaking of cruisers, here, in Riverside, on Magnolia Ave, there are still old signs that read, ?No U Turn, 10pm to 4am? at nearly every intersection? I guess every city had their way of keeping kids from having a good time while finding more ways to write tickets. Jerks! Baxter

Message: Hey John, I LOVE YOU MAAANNNN, and now it can be told! Surely you will indulge me a remembrance about the screening of "American Graffiti" that Michael Dragotto and a few others including your uncalibrated scribe pulled off in 1974, to which Mr. Johnson previously alluded. Even then, Dragotto the budding mogul had Hollywood connections, and scammed a print of American Graffiti, at that time not far out of theatrical release, out of a guy named "Tiny" who used to have a movie memorabilia shop in Venice. We were under contract to screen it one time in twenty-four hours--but, uh, demand was so great, you know--anyway, we ended up making $5000 for the Knights club and took a three day retreat in the mountains and sold our Knights sweaters back to the club for $50 a pop. I hope the statutes have run on all this--and I wish I were half as good a businessman now as Dragotto was even back then...a fabulous memory, I think I still have some of that $50 left...
Well now, I can see the initial Joe Mailander resume' now. 1.Member of the Knights, 2.Movie Pirate, 3.Used Sweater Dealer.
I'm sure George Lucas didn't miss the 5G's, so you're probably in the clear there, but the Knights haven't been the same since they took the 5000 on a weekend to Vegas and placed it on Crap/Eleven. Thanks joseph, for the story. I always wondered how those clubs made their cash as the dollar car wash idea wasn't going anywhere.
