Message: Mike, Did it occur to you, for even a second, that you may be insulting dozens, if not hundreds of good people who visit this site daily? People who live in the communities you call a cesspool, who help support this website? I know you know what a cesspool is, if your father, like mine, was in the plumbing business. An insult it was and I'm quite certain you didn't care. You know why I know that? Because dim-witted bigots never care who they insult. Remember, just because you're white...doesn't make you right. You owe alot of people here an apology, including myself. Send it to dzlizzy31@hotmail.com. John, if you think I should ignore this then don't post it...I'll understand.
I gotta say I was offended, and I came from where he came from.

Message: Found this site doing a google search for something else. I grew up in Gardena and lived in Hawthorne for several years. Dad worked for years at Progressive Plumbing on 130th and Inglewood. I drive thru Hawthorne sometimes during my runs to the LA area and it's heartbreaking. It's not that the old landmarks are gone, it's that the whole city has turned into a cesspool. Gardena, North Redondo, and Lawndale are not much better. I wonder why it is that good people run away from their city when scumbags move in, instead of the other way around. A shame. I can't think of a better place in the world to grow up than South Bay, Gardena, Hawthorne. Now it looks like a third world country. How sad.

Message: I just have to share this story with you. I have been in the radio business for nearly 20 years (including 8 years total here at 95.5 KLOS, 3 of those as the Music Director). Currently, I own and distribute my own nationally syndicated radio program called Current Classics: check out the site for complete info on what the show is about: http://www.currentclassics.com/.
In addition, I freelance for lots of local and national radio networks covering various music events: everything from concerts, press conferences and the Grammy's etc to...well this great 6-degrees story. The old saying is NOT true...you can go home...a few hours ago I got a call from another national radio network out of New York: they hired me to cover next Friday's ceremony honoring the original home of the Beach Boys in Hawthorne, CA as a national landmark. When I told them I actually graduated from HHS they flipped! How crazy is that...Small world, indeed!

Great story Jim, we'll see you there.

Baker man has the pix from that night so I know he'll put them up (sorry I was tardy getting them in) and I too had a great time meeting a number of new Cougars and seeing some "old" friends. We missed Harry Plotkin for his birthday but celebrated just the same and the Heavenly Chocolate Cake was, well, heavenly - thanks Mom! I think a few people lurked - step up and introduce yourselves next time! I will miss the Beach Boys dedication (rats) so be sure to get and post pix of our bricks John. What was the final inscription anyway? Tell Brian the Biermans say hello.
I will do that. Sorry I haven't kept up with the Feedback today, but I have an OLD Cougar who just came down from Downieville, CA to stay for a week or so; Gordon Bell, class of 62....actually the GREATEST HHS CLASS. Sue, I will get the Pinks pics up soon and also the 54-56 reunion pics. GOD I need help.

Message: Sometimes when I think to add to this page I have to stop myself. I often get too wordy and more often have things to say that don't have much to do with Hawthorne in the sixties. So, I started a blog. http://beachcitychick.blogspot.com/ Now you guys don't have to put up with the non-essential, bandwidth gobbling drivel. For those interested in my rantings...feel free to drop in. About the Pinks night. I ended up with a virus. I gave in to baby Michael, who gave it to my daughter, who gave it to her husband and now mom has it too. Sorry I missed it but be glad I didn't come and hug you. I hope someone will take lots of pictures next week for the Wilson House dedication because I have to work and make up for lost time. I hope someone from the class of 1969 makes it there in honor of The Beach Boys playing at our prom. It was very generous of them but then they are, "True To Their School"

Message: Hi - I went to Lawndale High with David Kroner, C/O 82. He added his name and email addresses to the alumni list, but I tried sending emails and neither one of them worked. I would really appreciate it if you could you verify his email addresses that are on the alumni list...we are old friends...and I would love to get in touch with him again. Thank you!
Hi Mary, Sorry I can't verify the email addresses on the Alumni List. People just forget to change them. Cougartown supplies the vehicle to stay in contact but it's up to all individuals to keep their email addresses current. If anyone needs to change their email address, go to the Alumni List and in the upper left hand corner, click on "change your email address". It's that simple.

Message: John, Just received my Cougartown tee about 3 weeks ago. I ordered the smallest size I could which is a medium. The printing and the logo is great by the way, but this is definitely a "man's" shirt and does little to compliment the female form.
Any possibility of getting the t-shirts made for women with say maybe a scoopneck and cap sleeves? Something that wouldn't quite look like a night-shirt on us? Just a suggestion.....
Thanks :)

Hi Anita, Thanks for the suggestion. The problem is, you get into different styles in all the sizes. People want sweatshirts, scoopnecks, v-necks, polos, long sleeves, etc. Ordering the different styles in all the sizes becomes a problem (different setups for different styles). How many of what style do we need to order. Then inventory becomes a problem (where to store them).
The Cougartown Tshirt is a way of saying I'm a Cougar. It's a Tshirt, and I agree it's not a fashion statement for women.

Message: After reading the comments about HHS not being listed with the 100 best high schools, I was going to make a crack about ?Recent Grad? but I don?t want to get that started again. Then after reading & scanning thru the ?NEWSWEEK?s Best American High Schools? article, all I can say is that the two contributing editors created the most bazaar criteria and process I have ever heard of -- even to the point of manufacturing data where none existed -- to base their ranking of participating schools. They seem to be lost in academia with no connection with the real world, but then I have found that many ?journalists? are just one step away from ?would you like fries with that order?? In other words, I am glad that HHS is not on that list or I would really worry. ? Baxter

Message: Since it is Mothers Day, I thought I would share some little known facts about the Hawthorne/LA area that some of our Mothers might remember way back when. Remember Ozzie & Harriet and Ricky Nelson? Well, in their old TV sitcom, the Nelsons lived at the fictitious address of the 822 Sycamore Road. But in reality, you can find that house from "THE ADVENTURES OF OZZIE & HARRIET SHOW" at 1822 Camino Palmero Drive, in Hollywood. It was the Nelson's family's actual home. That short, hilly street is located above Hollywood Boulevard, half a mile east of Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Also, did you know that Knott's Berry Farm (at 8039 Beach Blvd. in Buena Park), is the nation's oldest theme park? The famous final airport runway scene in the 1942 classic "CASABLANCA" (where Humphrey Bogart says goodbye to Ingrid Bergman) was actually shot on the east side of the Van Nuys Airport. The dilapidated hangar is no longer part of the nearby airport (it's used for storage), and the old runway used in the movie is now a narrow alley called Waterman Drive. You'll find the exact spot near Hanger 6 on the south side of Waterman Drive, just west of Woodley Avenue. (Some books mistakenly identify the location as the Burbank Airport, since the existing control tower there closely resembles the old Art Deco "radio tower" at Van Nuys Airport - which was torn down in the 1960's). Well, HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to all you hardworking, ever caring, would'nt be alive without you Moms.
