He pitched a no hitter. Our big right handed pitcher was Bill Parlier. I don't know what ever became of him but Baldwin & Parlier were our Koufax & Drysdale. Good to hear from you Pat.

Message: BOY JENSEN! Ya gotta just keep reminding everyone of the Pink's Run and you KNOW how very badly I want to go to one ... oh well, one of these YEARS! EVERYONE HAVE A BLAST! John, how about a little reminder "up top", (maybe included on the Beach Boys Monument Dedication notification), for the quasi-Cruise-by FOSTERS FREEZE afterward. "Might" try to make it to that one! Also, Jim Peppers: Even though I don't know you, I feel compelled to remark on your recent FEEDBACK post ... now mind you, I haven't been to Disneyland in eons, and the Matterhorn IS a little dim in my memory, but I have to ask! What was Lainie doing between your legs?????? NOW JOHN ... contain yourself. What was it Judy-Wudy used to tell you? Something like "Don't go there, John, just don't." LOLOF!!!
On the Matterhorn ride you straddle the seat and the person in front of you is sitting between your legs, as I recall. No containing needed.

It is kind of like being at Disneyland waiting in line for an ?E? Ticket ride. It is sure worth the wait. We can all visit while we are in line. There are lots of tables out back so we should be able to congregate in one area. There is a small parking lot with a valet but I suggest you park on La Brea. Hope to see lots of 70?s people.
See you there, Bob....

That game was so nasty, even Bill's mom, Phoebe got mad at him. Phoebe also worked at HHS in the snack bar.
Yes, Mrs. Cooper was a cafeteria institution at HHS for many years. I believe your mom worked there too, as did a few other HHSer's parents.

Message: Gary Bickers your praise of that 59 team is humbling. I along with the other guys on that team were just a bunch of blue collar guys that "The Coach" and the other coaches rounded into a fun football team. Our success was just teamwork. Thanks for the cudos. And John Rout, forgive me for the memory loss. Yea Murcer did catch, but I think that Joe also caught in certain situations. And Jerry Flores was also probably the best player I ever played with. The other kid named Howard, was George, LHS. He became my main catcher the next year. Moeller was the best against. Only hit I ever had off of him, The Duffer, Mr Means, wonderful coach:-)), made me switch hit against him. I'm a righty. I blooped a ball over 2nd base. I was amazed. We still lost! But it was fun. Too much stuff to talk about when your memory gets stirred. Hope everyone had a Happy Easter. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU. Jake N Jude. P.S. Hi Bake!
Hey Jakejude, I like the topic. Also, I just finished viewing the video that Rich Sloan taped of the 54-55-56 reunion. Lots of early HHS football stars (Bill Cooper, Ron Mix, Danny Rich, Jay Roelen, Bill Murphy, etc) were there. The Coach, Dave Capelouto, Coach Pfeiffer, among others all spoke very eloquently about early Hawthorne High and HHS football and basketball. There will be pictures of this reunion, as these Cougars looked lots more alive than many reunion people I've seen in the later classes. Just my opinion.

I understand a lot of people can't get off on a Friday during the day so I wouldn't think it would be as big a crowd as an "official" cruise night.
Yes, the dedication is on May 20th. I'm not sure as to the time, but I'll find out and post it. The Cruise to Fosters I hadn't thought of, but while we're in the vicinity we might meet there after as an informal get-together. Sounds good, Thanks Chris and see you on 5-20.

Message: Yeah Betty.....Maybe Ken Mercurio or even Vickie Daugherty. Do you ever hear from them? But, I agree ~ working on the Cougar Staff was an experience I would never trade for anything. Your right about Miss Clara McGinty. I will never forget sometime during our 2nd semester when I was Opinion Editor and you were Feature Editor I wrote an "Opinion" article, and for the life of me now I can't remember exactly what it was all about except that I took on the topic of "teenage sex". I know by todays standards it was tame but for some reason Miss McGinty felt she needed to run it past our principal Mr. Harold Wetzler. She came back to class and told us that he didn't want to print it. I remember arguing my point in front of the whole staff and the next day she went to bat for me and my first amendment right.....it was printed in that Fridays edition! I remember when she adopted her son.....she named him John. We didn't realize how simple life was 35 years ago did we? We all just wanted to get out there and make our mark in this world.....for those who have lived well, laughed often and loved much.....I'd like to say, consider yourself a success.

Unfortunately all my Cougar newspapers are long-gone. I wish I had them too! Those are my fondest memories at HHS - my two years on the Cougar Staff. Clara McGinty was my all-time favorite teacher. She always supported us in our effort to be censorship-free. This was tough as it was at the height of the Vietnam conflict and we students had some very stong opinions. But she stood her ground. She was the first single woman to adopt a child in the State of Calif. I saw her and her son at American Marytrs Church in 1988 - he was such a handsome young man. Anyway, someone must have copies they will share. Perhaps Ken Mercurio?

Message: Well a day late and a dollar short, but nonetheless a good tale of an Easter long ago. As a young teenager, my church (the Church of Christ located in Lawndale about a block from Leuzinger) appointed me to choose the site for Easter Sunrise Service. Being too young to drive, my Mother "volunteered" and the next Sunday after church, Mom and I and a couple of girl friends were on our way. In "those days", very little of Palos Verdes had homes on it. It was 98% empty fields and cliffs. The dirt roads to reach the various cliffs overlooking the great Pacific Ocean were very rough and many times, close to impassable. I wanted to find JUST the right cliff where the sun would rise right before our eyes and everyone would be blown away by the awe of it. Just such a cliff was easy to find, so it didn't take long. The real adventure that day was running through open fields (in BORROWED high heels) looking for "GREENS". Mama just called them Greens and said they were delicious to eat. So pick Greens we did and we had a blast! To look at these fields, one would think the wild grasses were as soft as the driven snow ... NOT! Those borrowed high heels were scratched and scraped and totally ruined. LOL! Needless to say, that was the LAST time I ever borrowed clothing and/or shoes! Oh yes ... the Sunrise Service was a huge success and very inspirational! Hope everyone's Easter was at least as good as those "old ones"!
Great story, Doris. I remember my mom and dad picking mustard greens in those hills too. I wonder if they still grow there.
