With us younger ones walking on the sidewalks and the older ones moving over into the water creating a massive fantail or wall of water that would drench us on the sidewalk. I couldn?t wait till I was old enough too drive and trust me payback was so divine.

However I can remember what fun Darlene Elmer (75), Kelly Dunn (76) and I had wondering how on earth were the fish able to swim all the way from the ocean to our gutters.
Now pollywogs are another story. Every time there was a good rain we would go down to the Farmer's field (El Segundo & Aviation Blvd) and risk our lives (story was that the farmer would shoot at any trespassers) just to collect a jar full of pollywogs.

Message: John, We also had worms in the gutter. Used them to go fishing. This was in '64 days. The rains in the winter used to flood the streets and us kids would get laundry soap and turn 129th street west of Jefferson into a huge bath tub. We'd have traffic stopped for an hour or two. The street/water departments would come out and open the fire hydrants and wash the soap down the storm drains. All the worms would die and the cars would be able to go through without skidding. I think the first skim boards were invented right here in Hawthorne back then.
I don't remember the worms coming out after heavy rains but I do remember the flooding. George Gates (LHS62) lived on 136th and about Ramona and down towards Hawthorne Bl on 136th, there was a vacant lot that would get knee deep to a 7 foot Indian after a good rain. I remember making islands out of pallets, boards, old tires, or whatever we could find. Lots of fun growing up in Hawthorne in the 50s. Who remembers camping out in the back yard when you were kids?

Message: Hey JB, I think I know the little fish Mary Ann Stanley was refering to. I grew up down the street from her and at the corner of 124th Place and Glasgow Place was the notorious "slick corner."
For some reason, all the water that drained down the block would accumulate there (in front of the Smith's house) and it would be 1" to 3" deep, completely algae overgrown and if you stepped into it, you were on your ass in a second, hence "slick corner." Occasionally, there were tons of mosquito larvae fluttering around below the surface. I think those were her "little fish." What do you think big guy?
That sounds right. I remember seeing mosquito larvae and they squirm around, looking like tiny fish. Whattayathink Mary Ann?

Hi Ray, that one end of Del Amo has been under construction for a few years now. Don't know why those stores are hard to lease unless you are isolated at one end and don't get the foot traffic as the ones in the middle. Have a fun time at Hennesseys.

Message: Welcome back John. This past Monday Cougar Alum, Mike McDowell,'65, Mike Scott,'73, and myself teed off to help support Fountain Valley High School Baseball program, in their first golf tourney. All procedes went to the Baseball Program for all their needs. Any tourney or golf outing is good with me. We finished 4th out of 42 teams. We're preparing for the second Cougar Classic next May. If you could remember the launchings from Vandenburg that lit up the evening sky, this is how I viewed the tee shots of Scotty. Incredible. They just explode off the tee, straight down the middle, about a quarter of a mile or so. I had to put my driver away and concentrate on sinking the putts. It was a great time getting together with the Mikes and helping the cause of Baseball. At the dinner following the tourney, the HHS alumni team was recognized for their contribution and support. We have a tee time for life in this tourney. Have a good day. Fooooouuuuuurrrrrr
Thanks Wade and good to know someone is out there playing golf to help a high school baseball program....tough job but someone has to do it. Also, please keep us apprised as to the 2nd Annual Cougartown Classic.

When I was catching up on my reading the feedbacks from a few days ago, I saw that you guys were lamenting about THAT GAME in 1959 again. I thought "oh please, it was 45 years ago, let it go. Please, Oh Mighty One, make him stop." Then out of the blue nobody herd from you. I was frantic, like I stuck a voodoo pin in your head or something. The only time Someone has ever listened to me is now? I couldn't sleep for days, so I finally said "please Oh Mighty Power, bring him back. He is the Grand Poobah of Cougartown, our world would not be the same without him and this site, that has brought happiness to so many people, would end." I was so relieved when I saw you were back, I knew Someone was listening. Now then, about that Blonde Hooter girl I ordered Power, could she be 36-24-......
Hey Bob, it's Almighty, not Oh Mighty. No wonder he doesn't answer your prayers. AND it would take a little more than THE GAME to make me walk away from this place. Hope your wife didn't make you sleep outside too long after the Cougartown picnic. Thanks for dropping by and hope to see you at the Homecoming game. Didn't Mater Dei beat Poly last year?
