Message: Carol Villepigue Cutri ('63) has asked me to let everyone know that our fellow classmate, Michael Thornton ('63) passed away yesterday. The cancer weakened his heart. Like Andy and Sandra, they found each other at the reunion last October, to be each others soulmate. Unfortunately, Michael and Carol's union was short lived. There will be no services, as he will be cremated. Carol does not have a PC, so any cards can be sent to her address at: P.O. Box 715, Trabuco Canyon, CA 92678. Please keep her and his family in prayer.
Always sad, Adrianne. Thanks for helping Carol out.

Message: John, you said when people hand you money at gatherings it's hard to remember later on where it came from. So, that little extra bill in your wallet is mine. Had a great time with the group that turned out at Cruise Night. Fellow classmates, this website takes money to keep it running. Like so many of you, I read it on a regular basis and it has been a great source of enjoyment. I admit I was guilty of reading and using its forum, but not contributing. It's easy to do. Just think of it as a magazine subscription. Paying your dues helps to keep the great feature articles running. Not to mention showing how much we appreciate John's hard work.
Thank you Adrianne for the Ctown dues AND for the Ctown dues plug too. Good to see you and Alex there on Saturday night.

Message: You guys are not going to believe this one. I've been in Texas this week to visit Cecil's mother and grandmother, quite possibly the two sweetest people on the planet. I asked them if they had ever been to California and Grandma Oleta said she had. Back in 1940, when she was a young bride, she took the train to Los Angeles to meet her husband who was working in a factory. She arrived late at night and had to take a trolley car, with a couple of transfers, to a small town where he had rented an apartment. It was dark and she was afraid but there were some friendly people along the the way to help her find her new home in of all places.....Hawthorne! Grandpa worked at Northrup. No kidding.
I KNEW I liked that Cecil guy Thanks Liz.....

Message: Back in the summer of '67, just before my senior year, my mother was planning to get married again and they were looking at houses in Carson. When we drove by the junior high and high school, both were surrounded by iron fences even back then...this was when HHS was still open. The bars around those schools gave me great thought as to the kind of students were behind them and I had no desire to go there. Thank you, Dave Capelouto, for getting me the interdistrict pass to finish in what I considered a safe environment. Maybe we didn't vandalize because we were taught to be more CONstructive than DEstructive, maybe because we were taught respect, maybe out of fear...or a combination of all of the above. But personally, vandalism simply never even crossed my mind.
There IS someone out there. Thanks Patti.....

Message: Well I will admit a few years ago I was sadly dismayed by the Iron fence around our dear Alma Mater. Then, the school was in bad need of painting and the black iron fence made it look worse. Now the school is painted and the fence, if I remember correctly, is tan which makes it look a heck of a lot better. PS Labor Day weekends surf was awesome. Here in Orange County it started off kinda small on Saturday 3-4' then Sunday jumped to 6-8' early in the morning with a few 10' faces glassy, peaking and Breaking with a lot of punch both directions. Monday was 7-8' with 10' plus walled sets breaking mostly left with some of the narliest drop-ins I've been in for a long time. After solid 3 hour 30-40 plus wave sessions each day I went out this morning and my arms are "noodled" from it all. So I hope all of my fellow Cougs still surfing and such had as much fun as I did this weekend. I am looking forward to seeing all who attend Cruise Night this Saturday. Maybe I'll get a chance to try some good ole South Bay swell before Cruise Night this Saturday.
Thanks Walter, see you and the rest on Saturday night at Fosters.

Message: Good to see you back Jim. Huskermania returns. The grass between the fence and the buildings is the one difference between a prison and a school. It is a hurtful feeling to see HHS with the fence. I was at a soccer tourney this weekend and spoke with some fathers who now live in Hawthorne. Their take was, the fence is needed to keep the violence out of the school, but it doesn't stop the bullets from entering. I told them I went to HHS in the late 60's early 70's and most of these fathers grew up out of country or East L.A. They asked that it must have been different with all the white kids around. I told them different times and different population, and lets not get racial. The focus wasn't on security as it was on education and respect of the school by the teachers and students. To them, the fence is a needed structure to insure a safe school environment. The students still respect the school, but have different values. I visited Colo Sps and Boulder this summer and didn't see any of the schools there with 10' fences. They resembled the HHS campus of old. How times have changed. I feel for the students, parents and educators who live and work in Hawthorne. The stress and fear of going to school is near life threatening. We didn't have these worries in our days. John, for those of us who attended Hawthorne, it was a place of peace and freedom, memories, education, friendships and a school of pride. The spirit lives on through CT. Oh and my phone # was OS6-2639. have a great day and stay cool.
I won't say all schools in Hawthorne have fences but lots do. I remember Hawthorne Intermediate had fences when I went there and so did Hawthorne Christian. Every school that I attended had them. Even Leuzinger had fences. It must be that these aren't made of chain link that gives them a prison look. Thanks Wade

I don't know if any of you other kids played in the phone games of that period, but one of our favorites was to pick a number out of the air and call up and ask for " Joe". Well if Joe wasn't there we would call five or six more times asking for Joe. By this time the people were getting pissed. The climax to it all was to call then and when they answered the phone, totally ticked, you would say "hey this is Joe, there been any calls for me"? I learned a great bunch of words for my vocabulary to that one. Fun times. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU! Jake N Jude!
