Message: Colleen Martin....your story about Mr. Grahamer, the German teacher, was funny. Didn't we have a class together with him? I also remember you as being a Wrestling scorekeeper but I think you just wanted to flirt with us jocks. lol Good to see you finally post a note in C.T. Have you seen Tammy Duckworth? Last time I saw her was around 1983 when she was working as a waitress at some restaurant in Ingelwood. (You know, once I almost asked you out for a dance when we where in the 10th grade). I remember I was lucky enough to be a select few to get in Driver's education in the 10th grade and I was 16.5 yrs old by June. Did you ever attend Derick's Wrestling parties? Anyway, good to see you're kicking and alive.

Message: The picture of the parade showing the Plaza, biggies / Skippy?s, Ryan?s and Lloyd Denees is what Cougartown is all about. Man I can?t believe what kind of memories that small photo brought back. People turned out in droves to watch the annual Hawthorne Parade, bringing their kids and making a night of the ordeal with their families. Ryan?s is where I bought all my cool shirts. The kind you buttoned second from the top and left the rest open. I was thinking about Ryan?s the other day and could have sworn it was in Inglewood on Market Street. Yes boys and girls I was a hodad, jelly roll and all. I did have the best of both worlds because I also surfed at Rosecrans Ave Beach. I was friends with the whole group and we all got along. I still have my old Greg Noll surfboard, only it now collects dust rather then sand, kind of like me.

Ah yes, I think Sharon was the class of 66. Anyway good siting, Don. Mike Shay had sort of a Cougar siting this morning at the Pomona Swap Meet. He sited Tom Burroughs' 56 Nomad. Tom, where were you?

Message: Hi All! I haven't written for some time but have enjoyed all the "news" from fellow HHS alumni! The Holly's restaurant was very special to me (in the 50's it seemed no one had that name but me!) My family went there alot and although I have not visited Hawthorne for a while, that establishment will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you John for this website; it connects people in ways you may not even know! Have a great weekend!
Hi Holly, Glad you enjoy the webite. Yes, Hollys/Hawthorne Grill is one of the most asked about places in Hawthorne. It must have held lots of memories for many.

Message: I've seen Holly's mentioned in feedback quite a few times. My Dad, Bob Cherry, was the construction superintendent on the job, when it was built in the 1950's . He worked for E&T Constructors. They also built the Wich Stand along with several other 50' style coffee shops. One of them of was Pann's which is located near La Tijera and Centinela Blvd. Pann' s was declared an historical building and is one of the few old coffee shops that hasn't been torn down. It is still owned by the same family and still serves the same old delicious food. I have an old matchbook from the original Wich Stand which shows locations at Santa Barbara & Figueroa and Slauson & La Brea.
Hi Jim and thanks for the note. I think I asked a question once, but didn't get an answer. What year was Hollys built? Now I know it was built in the 50's but I'd like a specific year if you have it.
The Googie architecture that was Hollys, The Wich Stand, and Panns, also shows itself in Chips Restaurant in Hawthorne that was built in the early 50s. Let's hope it doesn't turn into another Auto Parts Store.

I loved it when the weather got bad and the regular teachers got the sniffles, in stepped Mrs.Owens..She'd take roll call and would have her 30 students, she'd then turn her back and she'd have 28 students, I remember only sneaking out a couple of times because it was more fun watching everyone leave. One time I left only to come back for a book that I'd forgotten, it was harder to sneak back in. When I came back I remember Sharon Estrada was one of the 3 remaining students, all glaring at me!! Have a good weekend, I'm off to Temecula for Youth Hockey and Golf!!

Hi Ingrid, Hollys AKA Hawthorne Grill was torn down in 1999 to make way for an auto parts store. Sad, but time marches on.

I replied that I was interested in the money and to contact me at my new email address. Then I pasted in the email address from the email scam that starts ?Dear friend, I am Mrs Sese-Seko, widow of late Preseident Mobutu Sese-Seko of Zaire?.? I haven?t heard from either one since.
The last stuffed anything I won at the Hawthorne Fair was one of those GIANT California Raisins.

Message: Hi All; Seems to me that the A&W picture was pretty typical of how it looked at about 2:00 in the afternoon on a weekday. A Corvair Monza, an Austin Healey and a Nash Ambassador. But later as darkness approached the sights and sounds took on a much different feel. The cars that cruised through that place in the late 50's and early 60's were the things a young kid lusted for. Like Mike Weedameyers Buick Powered 40 Ford pickup, Ray Seidels Lincoln Powered 57 Bird, Barry Weiner (the flying Jew Boy) and his high winged 60 Plymouth, Ed Lenarth and his outrageous Blown Olds powered Studebaker, Bob McLure and Denny Unfried and their super-fast Corvettes.... Oh God Please take me back!!
Excuse Me;
M.S.

Great memories there, but how about Mike Shay's Black 57 Chevrolet Bel Air that started out as a genuine "A1 OK Used Car" but after replacing the original Turbo-glide with a Borg Warner 4 speed and adding 4:11 gears it was transformed into a genuine "Hawthorne Bl. Sleeper".

Message: Hi there Cougars! I love the picture of the A&W. Does that bring back memories. Wish I could have some root beer here, but alas it doesn't exist here in Greece. Speaking of pictures, I saw Paco's picture of Marsha Soares and was dumbfounded. First, she must have a portrait that's getting older and she's not, or what? Marsha, you look just like your beautiful mother. Of course that comes from a very weak memory. However, except for the hair color, you look just as I remember her. Sandy often talks about you. What a beautiful family you have! Take care all, and thanks for the Hit Parade names. How do you remember all that stuff? Jim Peppers
Thanks Jim, and honestly, I do not know.

A follow-up to last year's sensational PET SOUNDS tour, Brian is presently in Great Britain, in the midst of his SMILE concert tour, garnering fabulous reviews, & playing to sold-out venues. He offers an acoustic set; a Beach Boy classics set; a note-perfect rendition of the legendary, previously unreleased SMILE album (done to absolute perfection by Brian & his AWESOME back-up band of 10, multi-talented musicians, along with a string section); some of his solo works; and a finale that is sure to bring back memories of early & mid-sixties Hawthorne. This senior citizen can still ROCK!!! Why not make it a Cougartown night @ one of his L.A. shows?!?!
