City and State: Bethlehem, Connecticut
Maiden: Dorsett

Message: I keep coming back to this site reading the letters . . . the difference between living back East and Hawthorne is "heart". People back here are stand-offish and it took years to get to know anyone. In Hawthorne, or for that matter, California, people are warm hearted and friendly. When the younger generation comes aboard saying how great the site is, they know they have a treasure. You don't know what you have until it is missing, that is what HHS is to me with all the great people and memories. There were so many terrific people in the Class of '60, I admired so many and were awe struck by them. Once again John, "thanks for the memories!".
I too remember people in Hawthorne being warm and friendly, but I guess I was too young to know the difference. Maybe we assumed every place was like ours. Thanks Nancy....

Ah yes, Melissa, I can relate to you saying "that it is really getting better every year". That's exactly how everyone feels as they step up the ladder to their Senior year. Thanks for the feedback and please join in anytime, as it doesn't matter when you attended HHS, we are all Cougar brothers and sisters.

Message: John, I really have to thank you for this web page, my family is starving, and my boyfriend is neglected and cranky, and I'm growing to my chair like Jordy in "Creepshow". I was reading old feedback and saw something about the fires of 76-77. That was when my parents bought a house in Camarillo, and a fire was just across the street from our new house. I was praying it would burn down so we wouldn't have to move away from Hawthorne. I had tried to get my mom to let me be a foster child and I would move in with Gayle Umsteads mom, who took in foster children. She wouldn't let me though, and dragged me away kicking and screaming. This came to be home eventually, although I really missed Hawthorne a lot, and I love reading about where I grew up and the city I didn't want to leave.
Hi Colleen, Everyone's home became home eventually, but we all miss Hawthorne the way we all remember it. Thanks for the funny feedback. You can always go back to Hawthorne through Cougartown. That's why we're here.

Message: Saw the message with Col. Wm Thompson, C/O '51 Leuzinger. He graduated with my mom, Irene Whitaker Greasby. I wore and still have the P.O.W. bracelet bearing his name. Did his name ever get put on The Wall? He was an incredible person according to mom. The Hawthorne sign in the picture is down at Haw. Blvd and Rosecranes. There was also one at Haw. Blvd. and Imperial. I remember going on family vacations and when we returned always seeing the signs at the ends of town and feeling good about being back home. Bud, did you get my e-mail? Cougs, have a great weekend.
Hey Wade, I'm sure his name is on the Wall and yes, you're correct about the signs. I wonder if they're laying around in the Hawthorne yard somewhere?

Message: Holy cow Batman if that?s Fred Moore then that has to be Jim Crawford with his lips stuck to Fred?s fanny. Why they would be on the south end of Hawthorne is most likely because of the bar just out of the picture. Its name was (back then) The Gold Candle later to be the Way Station then the Rocket. They usually were on Imperial and Hawthorne, close to the Black Boar now the Den. They did their fair share of drinking. I know this because Jim Quinn was my next door neighbor and we always had drunk cops in the hood.
OK all you nice Hawthorne Police Officers out there. His name is Pat Underwood and he lives in Hawthorne. Hey Pat, I wouldn't be parking in the street if I were you.

Message: I check into feedback every once in a while and enjoy all the chat that brings back those great Hawthorne High days. Wanted to add to the Dewey Webber buzz. Gary Bicker's E- mail brought back memories of the Dewey memorial held at Avenue C. It was truly an epic morning where God seemed to dial everything in in tribute to Dewey. One correction - the boat that Dewey's wife and kids were on for the at-sea memorial was actually the Body Glove boat "Disappearance" from King Harbor. That morning saw many of the great 60's surf stars in attendance including David Nuuhiwa and Donald Takayama.
Sin, Sex, Beer, Wine ....we're the class of 69!!!!!
Sorry about the hair Carl, but that's the way I received the picture. Something else you might want to visit is the Surfers Hall of Fame plaques on the Hermosa Pier. Don DiTomasso has them pictured on his website. Click here to view them.

Message: While the subject of surfing & Dewey Weber came up - I always remember Dewey for his outgoing cheerful personality. He asked a couple of my friends & myself to help score at a surfing contest in the '80's at the M.B. Pier...we had no clue what to do or how to do it, but we sure had fun up on that platform giving it our best shot! Bikini's & Dewey T-Shirts. We also played darts with him and had a lot of laughs - he referred to me (& about 20 other blonde beach ladies) as his "future ex wife". What a guy.

Message: Just a quick note about Dewey Weber. In his second shop built across PCH from the old 60s shop, Dewey started over in 1982. His real job was holding down the 4th. stool at the Hermosa Bar and Grill next door. If you wanted anything thats where you could find him.
Well he died. His funeral was held at C street in Redondo Beach. The weather had been very bad, but the morning of the funeral the sun came out, the surf came up to about 4-5 feet and two hundred guys hit the water along with the O'neil surf boat brought up from San Diego.
It was an affair fitting of Dewey or any Viking king.
Interesting story, Gary, thanks for that one....

Along with Karen Armstrout...Well great surf stuff. There were a few other surfboard makers in our area back then Hobie, Rick, Con & Gordy to name a few. I have had the good fortune this past winter to surf with a few of the truly great surfers from our time but none can compare to a lady that pioneered womens surfing named Eve Fletcher. She is in her late 70's and can out surf most of us men. Paco you may remember her from your days at Sano.

I knew a guy who lived in a one bedroom bungaloo with 6 other guys all from different parts of the world. The rent was just $500 a month so the rent was low for all. No one cleaned everyone just surfed everyday. What a life. Anyway, here in Kona it's very hot today. If anyone is coming over here soon, the lava is flowing really good. Message: Speaking of old time longboard surfers, my husband turned in his second-hand board and bought a new Wardy board in 1964. It has since been restored and hangs on a wall. Recently he was wandering through town and found a new Wardy board - turns out Wardy left Laguna Beach for New York, but left NY after 9/11. On his way to Washington - he stopped off in Laguna and made 6 boards - a perfect birthday present for the Hunchback. He looks 16 years old as he surfs those San Onofre waves. Lots of longboarders like that board (Makes me look like a longboard gift-giving genius).

Bob Davis is one reason why I decided to work towards my credential. He taught the fun way...learning does not have to be mundane...It can be a true experience ...that is what makes it easier to master whatever you are learning.
Hi Merrill, I don't know as he wasn't around during my years, but I bet someone knows.

Message: Saw Fudruckers mentioned. That place has the best burgers. I wish they had one here. Not sure if I mentioned this before but about a month ago an older man came into my gym to workout for the three weeks he was here. He was from Redondo Beach. I started talking to him and found out his name is Hap Jacobs of Jacobs Surfboard. He is 75 and in great shape. He was so nice. He comes back here every couple months. Anyways, thought some of you more mature surfers would remember him. My daughter finished te Great Aloha Run but had to stop at the 10 mile marker in the Honolulu Marathon due to knee problems. Start looking for her clothing line in surf shops in about 4 months. It's called Sick Surf and it's starting to get known here. Aloha
